Meanwhile in reality: what you want always selects from what is available, what and how is produced and based on how it is (in a historically contingent way) distributed, what you need were always some few basic things (apart from social interaction – the most complex of your needs, having nothing to do with your polished ego), and what you desire is what the Other desires anyway.

Meme's aside, don't just jump from book to book frantically. Have a study plan, and always have at least two consecutive books in the same discipline, preferably going from easier to harder, or from one area to another. Take notes, and at the end of the study phase (your 2-3-… books) re-read them.

You can learn a lot about yourself, modern theory, linguistics, politics, capitalism, ideology, anthropology etc. through Lacanian texts, so I'd say they are essential for 21st century communists.
