Ohoho you have no idea. Pic related was me trying to explain just some of the problems with comics, only some of which are the sales tactics. But keep in mind this was a couple years ago. Marvel has doubled down on the SJW shit since then, which changes some things said in this pic.

But long story short, comics are $3 or $4 each, usually. So in that regard it's not unlike microtransactions. The problem is that each comic is written in a way now so that those $4 get you maybe 15 mins of entertainment, if you're lucky (and a slow reader), and you do, most definitely, need to read more than one issue of a comic to understand it. A typical "story arc" these days is about six issues, if you buy a collected edition, it will typically be about six issues long. But to be honest you can't understand a story arc by itself fully anymore. You need the shit before it too. And all the ways it crosses over with other series. And then at least once a year now both Marvel and DC will do a universal crossover where typically every series will become a "tie in issue" for a main miniseries, and the effects will be felt in each individual series, so you can't just ignore it. And though you wouldn't expect it, it's the more obscure series that are easier to follow. Animal Man is less likely to cross over with other things because who even cares about Animal Man (even though it's awesome)? But the things casuals go to, like Batman? It's not a joke to say that not only does Batman typically star in at least three series (Batman, Batman & Robin, and Detective Comics), but then of course there are all the Justice Leagues (so the main one, plus other things like Justice League International, Justice League Dark, Justice League 3000, Justice League of America, etc). At any given time now there are typically like three Justice Leagues, and Batman is typically on all of them since he's the most popular. Then there are all the Batman spinoff series. Nightwing, Batgirl, Batwing, Robin, Red Robin, Catwoman, etc. And of course those guys are on the Teen Titans and shit. It's not an exaggeration to say that in a single month, if you wanted to follow Batman's story, you would need to buy all of those series listed above. And then every month for six months to get a single story arc for each. And you think you can just get one, but they all reference each other has happening at the same time, with Batman jumping from one place to the other, so it's all one story from him. Oh, also shit like Jonah Hex gets thrown in there too, even though he's a 19th century cowboy, because they have it take place in Gotham nowadays so that they can tie it in to Batman and get the whales to buy it so they can get the whole story (like he'll investigate something that relates to the case Batman is solving in the current arc).

Now of course I mentioned all the Justice Leagues and Teen Titans. Oh and Young Justice. So you just want to read Batman's story but you won't fully understand it without these, but you won't fully understand those without reading the solo series of each individual character. Now not every one's solo story will be important to the league every month, but it will happen. If you want to keep up, you're gonna need to get all of their shit on your monthly list. Needless to say this covers 95% of everything published by the company. Then at least once a year (though lately, it's more like three or four times a year, making it constant) they do a universal crossover, just ensuring that you can't ignore a single thing without missing a chapter of the story.

But did I mention the backstories? You can't pick up Detective Comics 925 or whatever they're on and just understand it. It continues from the cliffhanger of 924. And so on, and so on. This is why they do reboots so often now. But wait, not with the more popular characters, like Batman. Their comics are always too popular to be truly rebooted, so you'll be reading, thinking you got a reboot so you can just start, and then you realize there are five Robins and three Batgirls and the entire story revolves around a minor background character from a random story in the '50s. And this is awesome when you understand it, but you have to be mega autistic (and have invested thousands, or just pirated) in order to understand it. As much as people complain about reboots in modern comics, the last real reboot was in the 1950s, with The Flash, and that was quickly retconned to be an alternate universe and not a real reboot. Really nothing has been rebooted since before Superman was invented. Once you start down the rabbit hole either you pull yourself out once you see how deep it is (which most people do), or you fall too far, and can never stop getting the new issues. And this is the audience mainstream comics rely on, the people who have been reading it since they were kids, in the '80s and '90s, and are too addicted to stop now. But with constant cancelling of series, relaunches of series, and (seeming) reboots, not to mention killing off and replacing decades old characters that were keeping these people reading in the first place, these people are finally giving up. And dying. Their aging and nerdy (see: fat) audience is literally dying, and it's a major problem for comics companies.

And yes, I know I said "long story short." This is the short version. I haven't even really started explaining the depths of things yet.

It would be extremely easy for Disney to completely clean house with Marvel and force a hard reboot of everything and make it kid friendly (i.e. parent friendly). Maybe hire Giruhiru to do everything. Their version of Power Pack is well beloved.

The key problem is Diamond not letting Marvel distribute outside of specialty shops. Comics actually made for kids still don't sell super well because they can't be found in places where kids can actually find them. This is why Archie and Sonic the Hedgehog sell like gangbusters compared to Marvel and DC, you can pick them up at the supermarket, and for much more reasonable prices. If Marvel and DC could just drop Diamond and distribute in logical places, then I'm sure they'd find the comics actually aimed at kids would sell better and those would become the trend. Frankly, I don't know how Warner Bros let DC get fucked by Diamond so hard for all these decades, but now that Disney has Marvel, they should really use their enormous funds to fix the situation. Of course, I'm sure Disney doesn't even care about the comics division of Marvel, they're in it for the movies, but there is untapped profit there, even if it is pocket change to Disney.

Marvel's comics division exists to churn out stories to be made into films. Disney has a lot of good stuff to get through before they notice that their writers have been writing trash.

The same probably goes for DC at this point even though Warner Bros execs ruin all the stories in adaptation anyway.

If the heads of these companies were smart they would realize that it would take them forever to burn through the 80 years of material they have, and by that point they can just do remakes. Hell, they remade 2002's Spider-Man 1 in 2012, and 2014's Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a remake of the already poorly received Spider-Man 3 from 2007. They're only waiting seven years to remake poorly received movies now (and make them worse). There's no reason to keep making new comics if they're only for testing out movie plots.
