Memelords will tell you to start with Daggerfall. Unless you're super h4rdc0r3, don't. If you're an oldfag who played stuff like Ultima Underworld, you'll probably like it, though.
If you can stand shitty graphics and dice-roll combat, play Morrowind. If you're young, you'll probably want to start with Oblivion. Under no circumstances should you start with Skyrim.

Oblivion can actually look good in its own weird way if you dish enough hours of modding into it.

Start with Morrowind with Morrowind Overhaul. Includes some graphics enhancing mods and patches all packed with an auto-installer:

Then play Oblivion with patches and graphics enhancing mods of your choosing + Unofficial Patches.

Then wait for TESVI or go back and play Daggerfall if you're up for it.

The biggest changes are ragdoll physics, and that your attacks will always hit (i.e., they're not based on dice rolls). Also, everything in Oblivion is voice acted, while Morrowind is mostly text.

Daggerfall is my personal favorite but its not easy to get into for a new player, I recommend you get into it later on

morrowind is great, get yourself in the right mood and play it. Don't use any of the fancy texture packs. Just MGE-XE to get rid of the fog.

oblivion is pretty damn bland unless you enjoy tes games enough to get into the politics behind regions.

skyrim is decently fun, i'd say more so than oblivion was.

When will people understand that it's stat-based diceroll combat, like every fucking RPG before it (and most after it). If you have a dagger skill of 2 out of fucking 100 (and you can even go above 100), of fucking course you're going to be shit with a dagger. Build your fucking character, like, you know, an RPG.

But for real, as a first time you want a weapon as a major skill. Dunmer for example are good with long blades if I recall correctly. Breton is one of the best races though so you picked that right

Enjoy the ride. Max your endurance as much as you can when you level up, so you get early health increases. They stack as you reach higher levels. Beyond that, don't rely on us too much. You know all you need to, get your feet wet and make some mistakes. Just don't throw away quest items, because you can do that in this game.

Don't worry about the difficulty curve at the start of the game, around the time you get to vivec city you wont need to worry about it most of the time.
unless you go to overleveled zones, of course
