To be accurate they said they'd have online features that cost money. They didn't specifically say paid online multiplayer. They already have Pokemon Bank, but that's only £5 a year.
I seriously hope their paid online features are just optional things, and not required to play online. That's what everything hinges on. If I have to put extra money down on top of all the bills I pay just to play the console I already own online, I'll stick to the Wii U and ditch the Switch, and sulk in my tiny corner of PC gaming while everything else turns to shit. The 3DS and Wii U have a system where you can redownload old titles. The 3DS especially assumes that if you have a game you must own it, which is exploited by homebrew devs for free games.
The only limitation is that the 3DS locks your account to the hardware, but if it gets stolen you can fix that with a phonecall or email. Outside of that they have a competent system for digital distribution, with accounts and all.

I have the old small 3DS with the shitty battery life and I don't even play it outside the house for more than 3 hours in one sitting. Usually if I take it somewhere where I'm going to be playing it for that long, it's a place with an outlet and I just keep it plugged in while I'm playing it.

More or less, Nintendo is probably going to make plenty of shekels off indie games on the e-shop, VC titles and other sort of apps and stuff with the small screen. A game like Breath of the Wild is probably more intended to be played at home anyway

Keep in mind that TECHNICALLY, the Switch is a HOME CONSOLE with some portable capabilities, not a portable console per se so retail titles like Skyrim and Zelda are likely designed more for home play with portable play as more of a bonus.

Something like Splatoon though might not take up that much battery life because I'm guessing it'll be pretty small scale compared to other titles.

There's already more hype for it than there ever was for the Wii U. Mariofags will buy it, Splatoonfags will buy it, Zeldafags are probably gonna buy it more than the Wii U version, and with portable Skyrim, and Switch Sports, I doubt it will face as big of a dilemma as the Wii U did.

Also, the Wii U was actually pretty successful in Japan and outperformed the PS4 for quite awhile until the Switch was announced. It was only in America that the Wii U flopped because Nintendo of America marketed it poorly. Seriously, the average American buyer didn't even know if the Wii U was a separate console or an add on for the Wii for the longest time.

If they didn't do the paid online shit I'd have liked it. They had a neat selection of games, and since it's a handheld it would be really convenient. It's a massive step up as far as handhelds go.
But then they went and fucked it up. Now you have to pay a fee to use a big chunk of the games on your system in the way they're meant to be used. Ever seen a PCfag mention how Nintendo consoles make great secondary stuff? That isn't going to happen anymore, because now you have to pay extra. Sonyfag wants to try a Nintendo handheld? He'll be paying extra for the privilege on top of his current fees.

So now what is there? PS4 and X1 have the same cancer and more. Vita is nice but I doubt Sony are going to stay in the handheld market any longer, and if they did it's successor will probably have paid online. PC gaming is going the way of Windows 10 and I don't want that. Phone gaming is cancer and has always been cancer, except maybe the Ngage at a stretch. All that's left is the old stuff.

Only way they'll salvage this is if they see their stock going down and quickly get rid of paid online multiplayer. I doubt they'd do that, and even if they did I'd still be skeptical. That just means they'll try again later.

Actually, the Switch is still a home console that just happens to be able to go portable. It is not specifically a portable console. Plus, the 3DS had a very low battery life for a portable console and it wasn't really a huge problem. Most people are probably going to be taking their chargers with them. In fact I don't know a single person who owns a 3DS and doesn't take their charger with them.

Not to the same degree that the Wii did, where one of the best received games by the mass market was fucking Wii sports because it "offered a new way to play" and was a family/party game designed for all kinds of gamers. The Wii U was actually a pretty straight console compared to its predecessor, whose entire billion dollar marketing campaign focused on the appeal its quirk would have to casuals and people who never played games before. That's why the Wii was a huge financial success and was able to actually make it despite having lower grade hardware than its competitors

That fact that it's trying to be both a console and a handheld rather than one or the other is a bigger problem for me. If they made a dedicated handheld then they could improve on things like the battery life (3 hours is not enough for a handheld), and if they made a dedicated console then they could cut out the screen and make it bigger to have better and more cost effective hardware.

I'm a programmer who has many years of experience with graphics programming. Vulkan really is amazing. It's essentially the best parts of OpenGL made better, dropped into a lower level, and with the 20 years of cruft dropped into the trash. Just from an API standpoint, if you're into low-level programming with tons of control, Vulkan is a dream. It's amazing how neat and tight it lets you get without sacrificing almost any portability. It's not even as hard as most people make it out to be. Yes a hello world program is like 500 lines of code, but that's almost all boilerplate; a significantly more complex program is about as much rendering code as the same in OpenGL, and the same boilerplate that works in the hello world program is still useful and scales up to larger programs.
