When the Switch is released in March, the Wii U would have already been on the market for four years and four months.

Assuming that all major activity for the console will cease around that time, what sort of final grade would you give the Wii U as a video game platform?

Some things to consider:

In spite of it's initial $300-$350 MSRP back in 2012, it was still cheaper than the PS4 ($400) and the Xbox One ($500).

It was the only console that allowed backwards compatibility out of the box from day one. The Xbox One allowed it later through patching, and the PS4 only allows consumers to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games through PlayStation Store purchase and downloads.

It was the only console that had backwards compatibility with accessories. Accessories for the Wii worked flawlessly with the system, whereas Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers were incompatible with their successor consoles.

It was the only console still offering meaningful and successful first-party exclusive titles. The Xbox One and PS4 has had very little exclusive titles for each system, and none of which are groundbreaking or even new (Remastered editions, etc.). The only thing that has driven console sales for these platforms are just multiplatform titles (Battlefield, Call of Duty, EA Sports, Assassin's Creed, etc).

It was the only home video game console to have online multiplayer without having to subscribe to a premium online client for a monthly or annual fee.

With all that said, what's your final grade of the Wii U?

I might buy one soon but aside from Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, Pikmin 3, and Donkey Kong Freeze what's on it, if nothing else I'd rather spend my money on a Saturn.

garbage bin once CEmu matures enough to offer multiplayer capabilities on private splatoon/mario maker servers

AA Rank
it's wii+gb+somevcn64games with hdmi output once you get the homebrew launcher on the wii u and then homebrew channel on vwii

Don't expect something like Mario Maker for quite some time. 3DS will get an unofficial Mario Maker sharing server way sooner than Wii U will through CEmu.

wiiu has more good exclusive content than the ps4 and xboxone COMBINED

prove me wrong

still give it a D

Wii U gets a D, not even a D+. If there was a D- it would get that. Despite everything the OP listed, the library was a fucking joke.

you haven't done your research then

hes right about xbox one having zero exclusives

he's even wrong about that

xb1 and PS4 kept shoehorning in tons of social media and video streaming features. My brother's Xbox drained so much fucking power even when it was turned off, we ended up just unplugging the damn thing.

I don't play the Wii U too often, but I appreciate that if I'm just checking Mario Maker comments, or playing super Metroid, I don't even have to turn the TV on. Not sure if that's really a pluss though, since I could just be playing my games off a laptop if I want to save power.

I think there was a missed opportunity with Off TV play, though. Like How the Donkey Kong and FZero games in Nintedno land used the TV screen almost like a spectator camera. I think a full fledged spectator mode like that would've been cool for Bayonetta or something.

C-
All the shit i wanted was censored, but there was some good shit on it regardless.

The console was fine. The small screen was nifty. And the gimmick was unobtrusive enough to ignore it.

Just it's game selection was so weak. It should have been popping.

I give it a C+. It wasn't strictly bad, and had a good feel for the games it DID have. But a huge amount of untapped potential. Also marketing was terrible.

great library right there

correct

and all of these are better than the combined ps4 and xbox one exclusives

Why would people bash big third party games from companies like Ubisoft and then berate a console for not having them?

God. This gen could have been so much fucking better if Ubisoft and Capcom and Konami had gotten their fucking shit together.

The same thing that compels someone to draw this.

Who the hell butters their toast backwards?

Someone that was drawn by Tom Preston

I think that it is some old Dr. Seuss reference.

My point with that people are compelled to play the newest big title out there even if it is shit and from a shit company.

How many fucking times have you heard the excuse that given that it is better than anything that came out recently like if they have to play every shitty title that came out? It is like being ass raped by a different person everyday and praising the first person to use lube in this quarter.

When the Switch is released in March it will bomb completely. Why? Because it has no hardware. You can't run games on no hardware.

I'm considering getting one. There isn't really anything on there that interests me (apart from the new Zelda game), but I like the fact that it's backwards compatible since I skipped the Wii.

If the rumors of it being region free are true, I'll probably get one.

This right here is the deciding factor for me.

Best of the worst, but thats still bad.

Some people have started likening to the Dreamcast lately, but honestly i think it is more Saturn.

Neither, those 2 had games
Underrated games, and the Saturn was a standard console for a niche or 2 (shooties and fightans), Dreamcast was an arcade general
Wii U has max 8 games

But Zelda and Mario don't count because they're established franchises. So it's automatically classified as a rehash and should be dismissed on principle.

So Wii U has 1 good title that cannot beat PS4's 1 good title which is bloodborne. A completely original game.

...

Like the Saturn in the sense that it was poorly advertised and than unceremoniously dropped.

No, no - if anything the Vita is like the Saturn, but it's still a pretty shitty comparison.

Let's not get into that.

Anyway, I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion but the Wii U is definitely going to be the worst console of the generation by the end of it… especially once the Switch saps most of its exclusives to bolster itself.

It's still overpriced, underpowered, the gamepad was never really used to the best of its ability, the system wasn't marketed well, and although it had more first-party exclusives than the other 2 almost all of the games were disappointing for their respective series, or at least not as good as they could've been. There are only a handful of games I'd truly say are great on the system - Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2 (it's a step down from the first, but still great, but just barely) Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3 (a step down from Pikmin 2, and arguably even Pikmin 1 though), and Splatoon. Splatoon is getting ported to Switch.

That's 4 games. Games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World were good and I enjoyed them, but they weren't "great". There was no exclusive zelda, have the first-party library felt like ports or literal shoverlware (Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival? Wii Party U? Wii Fit U? Mario Party (whatever numeral they're at now)? Shit, I know I forget some of them, if only because they were so fucking bland.

It's homebrew use is very limited - the only really good thing about it is hacking the vWii, and I guess DS emulation? It can't really emulate stuff that the Wii couldn't already play in the first place besides DS, and DS itself can be emulated on literally any phone these days no problem. What homebrew applications could folks realistically want that no other system could offer? Yet another port of Linux? Yet another port of Doom? I mean, shit, the system isn't strong enough to manage anything really cool - unlike the PS4 which can have SteamOS loaded onto it and utilize Vulkan to play PC games.

Even outside of homebrew potential, I think the PS4 is already the better machine. Games-wise, it'll undoubtedly be the better machine by the end of the year - I'd argue it already is one now, but I do understand that's a subjective opinion.

I rate it a D-. It barely managed to do anything right, and I regret buying it on launch. I hope the Switch fairs better.

I actually gave my sister my Wii U for this reason. It's been sitting there and I'm always thinking "haha! I'll have such fun playing it" but when I log the hours I've used it's hardly over completion of 3 games and the rest is emulation. I think the most I played Wii U was replaying Megaman 1-10,X-X7, NT,BN etc…and that's it. I could have just played VirtualBoy. sad.

Might be wrong, but I don't think the PS4 even allows all that, just PS4 games, "HD" PS2 games with trophies, and maybe PS3 games that got "remastered" for the PS4. At least, last I checked, it doesn't even have a PS1 section for its PSN (oddly for a Sony system, as they've always been able to handle PS1 games in some capacity, whether it be physical or digital compatibility). Just saying.

The saturn is segas best console and had some amazing games on it.

basically this

sex off shill

Official support: F-

Homebrew: B, will be A+ in the future when stuff said is polished

What really pissed me off about the Wii U is how Nintendo couldn't be arsed to support the thing themselves. Even the Wii's first party support puts it to shame.

...

Final Grade: F+
The Wii U is a dog shit console. I managed to nab a ZombiU bundle for $180 a mere 3 months after the thing launched and even after heavily enjoying Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros and a few other titles, I still felt robbed. Because I know that outside of those games I own, there's never going to be anything else to get. And also that the wait between all those games was so great that I'd actually managed to 100% every Wii U game I've owned just because the droughts were so long I had that much time to clear them.
20 years from now people are not going to want to get a WiiU to add to their collection because it's simply not worth it. I don't even want to imagine what it'll cost to get a gamepad repaired after Nintendo's tech support for the Wii U is gone. This thing is going to be Atari Jaguar tier where only rich suburbanites with too much time and money are going to go out of their to get one for their collection.
It has some nice games, yes. But a few nice games won't save it from being the fucking disgrace of a machine it is. Have some porn of Wii U game characters, Wii U also had some pretty good waifus, which bumps it's grade up ever so slightly.

Glad to see this website is still as dysfunctional as ever

Shit mismanaged console but decent because of backwards compatibility and homebrew. I'll probably consider one depending on what happens with the Switch.

Just self-report and let the mods clean it up.

Dust Collector/10

Nipponese WiiU? 4/5.
It had some great games, but not a lot and some real issues.

American Wii U? 1/5
Half the good games were censored to hell or never released.

I fucking loved a few games on it so much. I like the Wii U, but I can't fault anyone for giving the thing solid F.

If its just the console by itself C- and only because of the backwards compatibility. Its really shit otherwise. With the games though it's like pure platinum.

It's difficult to say. What few games I have for it I've invested quite a lot of time into and enjoyed very much (TW101, Bayo 2 and MK8 in particular), but because of how few there are I'm not even slightly interested in the Switch at all and will likely not buy a Nintendo system again unless they seriously get their act together, which I doubt they will any time soon.

Also, because there's no other appropriate thread for this, fuck Smash 4, it was half the reason I got the console and it sucks dick.

Okay, so I read what you typed out.

Frankly, I think your opinion is shit.

You raise some fine points. The battery life of the gamepad is terribly short, but remedied with the purchase of a larger battery, which has been available either off eBay or Nintendo's official store.

And, yes, the asymetrical 4on1 games like the ones seen in Nintendo Land are almost non-existent.

And the 32GB maximum internal storage is also remedied with compatible external HDDs. I got 500 GB of storage space on mine.

And your claim that there's "not enough exclusives to warrant buying one" is a matter of perspective, since I personally own nearly forty games on the console, the grand majority of which are exclusive titles, and I've been happy with my purchases so far.

But everything else, such as the lack of GameCube backwards compatibility and the fact that there's an emulation application that's "almost playable" are stupid and invalid points to bring up.

It's as if you're bashing the Wii U only because it's not a PC that allows you to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

If you're holding home video game consoles to the lofty standards of all that you can do on a PC, why do you even bother conjecturing on consoles, anyway?

I own a gaming PC as well, so I understand all the perks and pluses, but bashing a console for essentially not being a gaming PC is like bashing a motorcycle for not being a car.

spot on, I don't know what noa was smoking, but holy fuck they need to stop trying to be "disney but videogames" and if you are That fucking worried pull a Buena Vista and release that way. hopefully their restructureing and oversite board fucks noa hardcore.

List the games, I legitimately can only think of a handful of games that are truly "great" for the system, and I've had this shit since launch.

Cemu hopefuls are idiots deluded by Dolphin that emulator development is all roses.

INB4 "I don't like those" or "none of those sold" or "Those don't count".

…I can literally emulate Xenoblade X fullspeed on my fucking laptop at this very moment.

CEMU's devs sold their souls to get their shit so optimized pretty much.

Here, I'll list the games that I own.

NSMBU+NSLU
SM3DW
Hyrule Warriors
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Bayonetta 1+2
Sm4sh
MH3U
ZombiU
Rayman Legends
Tropical Freeze
Splatoon
NintendoLand
Rodea the Sky Soldier
WWHD

I might've forgot one or two, but the Wii U's library really isn't very good. That's just the games I own… not all of those are good, and there's a lot of ports too. Hyrule Warriors is arguably better on N3DS, BotW is gonna be better on Switch. Etc.

WiiU, like the Wii before it, is only worth buying if you have the means to run homebrew on it.

It had some nice titles like splatoon, bayo, w101, DK TF, mario kart (aside from battle mode) but many others disappointed, such as zombiu, devils third, and so on. I remember 4/v/ hyping the shit out of the wiiu watchdog port, thinking it would use the gamepad in clever hacking ways - but nope, it was just a shitty port with framerate issues.

Overall, mixed bag of a console. Cheap and worth picking up nowadays thought. It's a shame there weren't many nintendoland esque games which utilised the gamepad better.

Oh yeah, MK8, I own that too.

Don't knock CEMU. They've done amazing things with that emulator - MK8 runs near perfectly barring some textures.

They'll never do that. Nintendo are still operating like it's the 90s and that gaming is only for children. That's why they don't get any decent 3rd party support and why games they do get are censored.

Despite a few things I disagree with, you're more or less spot on.
I don't think the power bricks are a problem, though I understand that they are clunky. My buddy plays competitive smash and I've gone to events to help him set shit up and cheer him on - and in my personal case at least, i didn't find it to be too much trouble. Moving any console will be a pain in the ass regardless.

GC backward compatability would open up a can of worms with regards to support and patenting and so on, and as GC games are no longer in production, it would be a net loss as a business. However, your point of "they CAN do it, but just fucking didn't" is entirely valid.

You're a bit harsh on the library but I don't blame you at all. There are so few exclusives on the wii U, that if you don't enjoy some of them you're left with very little else.

Hopefully CEMU development continues at a strong pace, and hackerfags fully unlock the console. As you pointed out, this thing is great on homebrew. And cold comfort it may be, there are patches for shit like tokyo mirage sessions.

That must be one beefy laptop because I tried running Xenoblade and it nearly crashed my computer that can run most current and last gen games on high. The reality is that Cemu only works if you got incredibly specific hardware, and if you do then you either went out and spent hundreds of dollars on it or you're just lucky. It's a horrible emulator honestly, working from game to game update kinda defeats the purpose of developing an emulator.

When Cemu inevitably dies like countless other closed source emulators you'll be left with a half baked piece of shit, and you're making it hard to feel any sympathy really.

And Project 64 runs some games at an acceptable and playable way. I'm just saying that Cemu isn't a unique situation and previous examples haven't ended well.

Most of the videos you're seeing of people running CEMU is this one guy using a fucking i5 750. He runs SM3DW/MK8/other shit at fullspeed rendered at 4k.

My laptop has an i7 6700HQ w960m. It's not the best out there, it cost me $550, but it's decent enough for "gaming" if you don't care about the highest settings. I have a gaming rig for most of my other shit but it's still nice to have something somewhat beefy to take with me.

How much is a Wii U worth and what's on it besides what noted.

Besides Daytona, Virtua, Sega Rally, and Panzer Dragoon what was on it, it wasn't a bad console but everything else was obscure or niche.

Why are you implying that niche/obscure games don't count? Your picture is a fucking 2hu.

My question wasn't Socratic I genuinely want to know.

Hopefully, being region free will force a lesson into NOA's thick skull. And by extent, into tree house. The localised version will directly compete with the nipon version, and even if the later sells a fraction of the first, it will signal devs and publishers that there's an untaped market out there, that pandering to requires a lesser effort to translate instead of re-write a lot of your game

E- while the XB1 gets an F and the PS4 gets an E

Only PS2 games are available on PS4, unless you're counting PS Now streams and PS3/Vita multiplats.

Honestly, if they got the japanese game and translated it proper like they did with FE:If then I might be tempted to play that instead.

As for the switch, it would be fucking hilarious, but they should release Doom with the D4D gameplay wad, just to say "Hey, we have DOOM as well!"

WiiU is a solid D, only because it had W101.

Typical Nintendo console: if you like Nintendo buy it. If not don't because Nintendo is all it can offer.

With the PS4 you get access to the entire output of the games industry. You don't have to be a Sony fan to enjoy it or buy any Sony games. That's how playstation has been a success for so long: guaranteed third party support.

What's a wii u?

How does a Japanese version compete with a localised version?! Unless the Switch gets hacked and translation patches become a thing. Not a lot of people speak Japanese well enough to follow a JRPG storyline.

So now it's dead, is it worth picking up? How's the homebrew scene on it, is shit still locked to the vWii portion?

Can I play GC games on the tablet shit yet?

I never understood the zelda hype. It can't be for the story. We all know how it's going to end. The gameplay is going from one piss easy dungeon to the next.

Mega Drive's library is better. Saturn is a close second, though.

Ive had one since launch. The system has had its ups and downs but Ill be leaving it satisfied with the purchase. It has a decent library. Smash 4 is the guft that keeps on giving, I have thousands of hours in that thanks to local tournaments etc.
I rank it closely behind the Gamecube.

Also this nigga knows whats up. Cemu is fucking shit. Closed source emulation? Why? Seriously, give me one good reason. Because you wanna know the real reason? The developers are obviously shit and are relying on hacking together bullshit to get it to run games(evident by how it strangely runs some games and mostly none). The code is probably ugly and amateur as fuck.

The wii u was an awful console
Was there ever one good thing about this shitty console? Aside from nintendoland

At this point, if you're still a kid and therefore the target audience, it's genuinely-challenging and big, especially compared to modern mobileshit. When you're an ADHD-crippled millenial mobileshit junkie like most kids nowadays, even something puddle-deep and piss easy like modern Zelda is a challenge, sad as it may be when compared to prior decades.

If you're not a kid, the only real draw left is seeing the ingame basis for all the waifu porn that will inevitably be cranked out within hours of release, and which many people crank one out to. Unless you're a jewtube faggot of course, in which case it holds value as something to mug it up while playing and print easy money with.

At least they've started including a "oh hey, you're not five years old/severely-retarded/an eceleb twat with necrotic motor neurons, here's something vaguely-resembling medium-low difficulty in games from decades ago, but labeled 'SUPER MEGA HARD MODE'" option. Better than nothing, although you're still better off going and playing something actually made to be a challenge to people without downs.

cotton, twinkle star sprites, fantastic pinball, radiant silvergun, guardian heroes, magic knight rayearth, assault suit leynos 2, saturn bomberman, D, Deep Fear, Die Hard Arcade, Keioh Flying Squadron 2, Nights into Dreams, Princess Crown. Just a fraction of the library.

That said, Panzer Dragoon Saga may be the best RPG of the generation, too.

...

Stop

...

Thanks for the info, didn't know Wii U got its shit fucked with that one
Guess these are the only reasons, not trying to look like an apologist, these are the last ones from its limited library
Wii U went the way of the N64

Y's>>>Zelda
Prove me wrong

I'd give it a D overall.

Good

Neutral

The WiiU's lifespan can be summarized as wasted potential. Nintendo made some improvements from the Wii, but not enough. It also had shortcomings that should never have happened. (For example, only 1 game from a franchise they frequently milk for shitty spin-offs that are at least guaranteed sellers.) They should have listened to their fans more during its lifespan. They seem to react in the next generation for the most part. I don't know why they do this. Hope they get their shit together for the Switch. (Which I'm already sceptical of considering the paid online, but if fans support it and let it happen there's not much that can be done. If they do go forward with it then I'm guaranteed to never buy it.)

If we count homebrew/softmodding features, that grade goes up to a B. (has room for improvement)

I still prefer the Wii for now because you can mod early versions to boot straight to the homebrew channel and never use the Wii remote if you don't want to. (great for saving batteries or emulation where a Wii remote isn't needed) Hopefully WiiU homebrew gets to that point, because I hate turning on the Wii remote just to enter the Wii VC, then turn it right off after booting the HBC if not playing a Wii game.

extra resolution would tax the gpu, not the cpu

in the 90's alot of family type companies set up separate publishing sections for more adult style content. if nintendo worries about it's image so much why not go this route?
or still yet hand it off to someone like atlus as they did with cubivore?

Let's ignore

Any of those titles destroy the Shitstation 4 or Xbone library

I like my Wii U. Bayo 2 and Expand Dong: TF are probably the most fun I've had this gen (though that isn't really saying much.)

Still pissed that it never got a Metroid title. I'm not laying a fucking finger on the Switch until a new Metroid is announced, released, and the consensus is that it isn't shit.

Splatoon is getting ported to Switch.
It's actually getting a sequel, Mario Kart is the port.

Go home toddler

All the good games were coming out in the future, and then it was the future, and then it was dead.

...

This image arouses me; what the hell am I doing with my life?

Video games D, at least it has splatoon. Would give a F only if it completely lacked video games like the ps4 or the bone.
Homebrew: B, might get higher if hackers get some good stuff going on it.
t. 2006 Wii owner bought it for almost nothing from a guy who sold it fell off a truck in one of my travels to colombia although my younger brother has a wii u

Well, it has splatoon and the other 2 nothing so yeah.

I'm getting too old man

It is difficult.

Have you ever seen Sony market niche JRPGs, VNs and dating sims? No. They're all 3rd party games and normalfags/casuals don't even know they exist. Sony can completely distance themselves from it and keep their hands clean.

Nintendo can't do that.

...

Nintendo published and marketed Bayonetta 2 and Fatal Frame. The DS also hosted waifu companion sims. What's a few raunchy VNs compared to those?

C- to C+
Higher than Xbone or PS4, but that's not saying a whole lot.
Could have been much better if they didn't fuck over some major series like Paper Mario and Star Fox and completely ignore others like F-Zero.

They're going to come right back to the Wii U after the Switch flops because of all the absolutely retarded decisions they've made, don't you worry about that.

well, i got my wind waker hd edition for like $150 on a black friday sale, so i'm not too upset about only having a couple games for it. that said it's devastatingly disappointing that i can count the number of good, entertaining games that really held my attention on one hand

for the price i am glad i bought it, but i feel genuine pity for people who bought one on launch. also, i'm still mad that this is the only nintendo console ever not to get a dedicated metroid game (aside from virtual boy). based on the wii u i'm not buying a switch until the end of its life cycle, since really all i want to do on my nintendo console is sit on the fucking couch and play nintendo games, not crash someone's rooftop party and play skyrim

source on 1st image please

I just realized the Switch won't even have an ethernet port.

God fucking damn it, it had better at least support the Wii U's USB ethernet adapter. Knowing Nintendo though they'll force people to fork out for a Switch-specific version.
