Why can't I play VNs, Holla Forums?

I've tried everything.
>Asked friends lol for suggestions

I still can't ever play them. I can play other games fine, but I just can't fucking get in the mood for this shit.

What is wrong with me, Holla Forums?

You have an actual taste for vidya?

Anxiety likely, I usually do said timesink activities when I have plenty of time to waste on wekeends or vacation, I keep thinking I'm wasting precious time if thats not the case.
This happens from GSG to VNs since they relax me unlike more action oriemted games where I usually take down all my frustrations upon.

Don't feel bad, user. I can't either. Just wait for the CG rips like me and we'll make it. We'll make it.

You fucked up

You could just not like VNs. I read Tsukihime on an HP Touchpad using an interpreter. It worked okay. Part of it is also what you were in the mood for and what you're reading. Tsukihime was fine when I was in bed and would read in general, but if I actually wanted to play a game I wouldn't be able to focus on it.

What are you trying to read right now? Anything in particular?

This is what I've got.

Less of a VN and more of a puzzle game to get the Princess to not die. Imagine an actually challenging Princess Maker. That's one that I would recommend if you like either:
A) Following guides
B) Getting some fucking note paper out and make notes about what worked and what didn't

I've heard that was decent but I've never read it. Might be better off playing with M+KB though, not sure.

Everything else, I can't really speak about. Some of it looks okay and some of it looks like shit. What kind of story did you want to read? Fantasy? Horror? Fantasy Horror Hentai?

Modern or Near Future (but not cyperpunk, post-apocalyptic, or dystopian) NOT set in a school environment with a mostly adult or young adult cast

Also not hentai

Kinda hard to find

I actually think this is the major killer for most JP VNs. Not hentai is relatively easy, but having a mostly adult cast is harder. Young adult meaning 17+, I assume, really goes hand in hand with not-in-school which also means it's a little harder to find them in English.

I can't even recommend Steins;Gate since that breaks most of that. I'm wondering if this is the major problem since this is most of the stuff I see recommended. You might be better off reading Light Novels instead of interactive pictographs. Give Kara no Kyokai a read, if so. It's a young adult cast with philosophy and supernatural themes set in a mostly modern Japan.

If you're willing to stretch it a bit, Steins;Gate or the non-sex version of Fate/Stay Night. I don't actually recommend FSN because of how bad the English translation is and the routes aren't that great. But if you want shonen powers with random dark bits sprinkled in, it's decent. I've never read Steins;Gate or Chaos;Head but I hear they're pretty spectacular. I'd actually say to give Tsukihime a try, while it is about a high schooler, it's not as slice of life dumb bullshit as others and the characters you encounter aren't all high schoolers.

I actually loved Steins;Gate and it doesn't bother me that Okabe is technically high school age in the first one since it absolutely never ever mentions anything about his schooling and it doesn't TAKE PLACE in the school setting.

I mean yeah, it's basically a bunch of high school students… but it never feels like it's some kind of teen drama, and that's what makes me love it so much.

Nothing. VNs aren't video games.

Oh, okay. Then Nasuverse stuff should palatable. Tsukihime is stronger than F/SN and you can 100% skip the sex scenes and lose nothing. Umineko, if you haven't read that, was also recommended by a friend who both loves and hates it. Another friend recommended Muv-Luv to me a long time ago but I read spoilers here and haven't felt the need to go to it.

I don't MIND sex scenes in a VN any more than I mind them in an R Rated movie, I just don't want a porn game.

Good deal on Steins;Gate It's good stuff.
Sunrider is also ok because the first one is free. Although it's really a strategy game with VN flavoring.

You're only going to further my recommendation of Tsukihime then. In my defense against F/SN's sex scenes, they're forced and serve no purpose other than
"FUCK WE FORGOT THIS WAS ABOUT PORN QUICK WRITE A SEX SCENE"
There's also Ace Academy on Steam but the developers might be SJWs and despite it being a college setting, everyone feels like a Japanese High Schooler thanks to my association of shonen mechs with anime. It's not actually that great, it's just a guilty pleasure of mine.

Oh, right, fuck. Phoenix Wright exists.

It's possible that you don't like VN's OP.

Enjoying her game?

Good. You're not a maniac then.

what is that awful thing

Brianna Wu 2.0

Tranny faggot that made an alright VN and a lackluster sequel

Read grisaia or steins gate and don't get the fucking steam versions
get the superior ones from nyaa

It's normalfag's first VN so play that first and then, if you manage to get a feel for the genre, move on to real VNs and not the dogshit that you normally find on Steam.
Not included in the Dogshit category are the popular Nip VNs that have been translated and are on Steam so the devs can make some money from the weeaboos who couldn't be bothered to pay for the games through other websites and would have pirated them instead.

TL;DR Start with Katawa Shoujo, move on to japanese made–english translated VNs available on Steam, then go play the shit without official translations like Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, Ever17, Saya no Uta, etc.

This as well.

Allow me to compare my shit games to yours. I just got me a chinese windows 10/android tablet just for VN's and schoolwork. So far this is all I got on a 64 gb microSD card.

Shit, for some reason pic didn't post.

Chaos;Head was pretty dank, it had this nice creepy atmosphere to it which gradually turned into this mix of creepy-gory-mentally unstable-badassery. It's also what led me to imageboards.
I'd suggest watching the Kara no Kyoukai movies rather than read the Novel, not that I've read the Novel to really compare them but I remember reading that it was some pretty amateur writing even by Nasu's standards.

I rather liked Fate's 2nd scene, with just Saber. Felt tasteful and fit the pacing like a typical story. The 1st scene was only forced because it had two girls, but the in-universe reason was a pretty viable excuse that was even carried into UBW's 1st scene.
Never actually got around to HF, but I hear that's when shit goes nuts. A shame, because I felt the sex scenes were largely unforced until then.

This would be my recommendation, OP. It was made in native English in a Japanese setting by people with a halfchan background. Thought it's high school romance, it behaves much more like a college romance, dorm rooms and all, Shizune's route aside.

Based on what you're specifically looking for, I'd reccomend Ever17 vndb.org/v17
Set in the "near future", not set in a school environment, and I don't trust you with these spoilers:

I'll have to warn you though that it gets really pseudo-scientific in a way only the chinks can think up towards the true ending.

Dear Lord, the cringe. Literally all but 3 of these are either complete irredeemable trash or so obscure I've never heard of them. No wonder you can't into VNs if that's what you're starting with and you have a single shred of good taste, user. The only way this list could be more garbage would be if I saw Major/Minor there
My advice, except for Go Go Nippon, Analogue and Hate Plus (which are not really good but are okay), just throw away all the VNs in your list and never even think about them again.
And except for Katawa Shoujo, Analogue and Hate, stay the fuck away from VNs by western devs.
You're doing it completely wrong.

See list, it's not that great but much better than yours

So much this, this entire post.
Katawa Shoujo, Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, Yume Miru Kusuri, Saya no Uta, Planetarian and Ever17, preferably in this order, are what I'd consider a good VN babby starter pack.

I'm considering buying a Playstation just for Steins;Gate 0. What do?

There's no reason to get a console for a fucking VN. Just wait

i would suggest muv luv alternative but you have to play the first two and the first one is pretty boring/cliché, it really hilarious how a setting can go from "a comedy were boy makes promise to girl and now have to choose which girl he loves" to "fighting aliens with mechas and saving what's left from the human race in a hopeless battle against Zergs"

This is important OP, have you tried killing yourself yet? Make sure to be persistent.

There's already an English Patch for the PC version.

what

...

To be fair, a few of them are Otome or Yuri and I don't think anyone here has any interest in that whatsoever.

there is a torrent?

True about otome, but a lot of anons are into yuri VNs.
The real problem is VNs made by western devs. Please don't make us think you just have shit taste and no standards.

If you are into yuri then I recommend Kindred Spirits: On the Roof (it's even on Steam, don't know how you missed it), and the Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke Wo series.

It's on nyaa, but read all the comments. Have you tried it?

Maybe you just don't like reading books? I don't know what you're trying to read, but since a lot of VNs hit the same notes as animes along with their art style, maybe that's holding you back too.

Good god, user. Have some patience.

If you have a windows tablet just use it for emulation and TV along with kantai collection.
Virtual Novels are boring as fuck, I'd rather read an actual book that has a good story.

Found your problem. You can't play a book.

Image Reply

That's just sad.

Just pick any off what I got, this is only the stuff I've kept as well by the way, I've played more.

Majikoi is set in a school but is extremely funny and pretty good overall. Does have sex but like Grisaia they add to the personality of the girl, it's not just a scene where they're boning.
Ever17 is a trapped situation, another very good one.
Everybody's played Fate at somepoint, it's a pretty good entry point for a beginner.
Oh! That's another one, grab a DS emulator and go through the first three Ace Attorney games. Those are excellent.
Danganronpa is more bloody but has a good cast and artstyle to it.
Valkyria is more a game with VN elements but it's a nifty little game. Same with the Nep series.
Embric is a good title if you're bored.

Be aware they come with their own particular brand of autism.

Out of all the VNs I played last year, that third act was the most disappointing by far. That end of the main route had me raging so hard, even when they added the extra mode to get the heroine you wanted I didn't go back.

Creator of Analogue. "Her" recent game of "Ladykiller in a bind" recently went up on steam but the art on that is just horrible.

Yes! Best yuri VN to come out in recent years. Sono Hanabira is okay but go through Aoi Shiro instead.

Also relevant things.

He isn't wrong tbh

Japan may not be good at many things, but it sure can make lesbians look cute.

I agree.
Reminder that /u/ exists on 8ch as well and isn't the cesspool 4/u/ is.

Wasn't it some mod on 4chan that made it his mission in life to turn /u/ into the hellhole it became?

That would be troid and yes, he's a numale as you'd expect.

only vn i ever read was saya no uta.. must have been something about that feeling of madness and despair..

But we were talking about VNs.

Who's your favourite girl, Holla Forums?

Anyone from Majikoi is a good choice. even Haguro.
Aeka is sweet, so is Sachi. Chiaki grows on you, especially during that last trial. And Iris just dominates you.

That's probably not a good choice for a beginner, due to the horror and madness surrounding it. Still some people like it for some reason.

I hate reading, recently tried to read some bloodborne summary that comprised a hundred pages but grew tired of it quickly, even if it was good and interesting. If VNs are anything like reading in general then I'm the same as you

You are nigger tier.

it's true, isn't it? A pity

I blame the modern education system focusing on teacher explanations with their own injected agendas rather than factual information from the actual books, which is then watered down even more by TV and Radio media, which is blasted down in every single home and urban center. It's not that only niggers are affected, but that every human is indoctrinated to have the same mentality from very, very young including the smartest of the bunch.
You have to adquire a taste for reading and in today's age, it's really easy to lose it in exchange for alternative mainstream media.
Open a history book, the oldest one you can find and try reading it for a while; it WILL bore you and you will feel that you want to do something else, but you must continue reading regardless for your own sake.
There is nothing worse than living in the information age and not knowing things which were commonplace 200 years ago, or even 30 years ago now, it helps to widens your perspective of the current world affairs.

Sometimes you just don't like something. You must be a retard to try and fight that.

I found your problem. You're fucking stupid.

The only ones (excluding purely ero stuff) I've actually dedicated time to finish are Katawa Shoujo, Saya no Uta, Yume Miru Kusuri, Kindred Spirits on the Roof, and the first arc of FLOWERS. translation for Eté when?

The ones on my backlog are Tsukihime and Umineko.

Surprised to see a lot of f/u/ggers on Holla Forums, considering Holla Forums's massive lack of ability to comprehend true love.

To answer OP, I face the same problem. I like reading stories, but have the attention span of a pigeon. You could try reading in short bursts, like a chapter or two a day.

Then how are you here, reading posts? You're still reading shit, nigga.
The amount of books I've read my entire life can be counted on both my hands. I'm only mildly ashamed.

and get friends with better tastes in VNs

Aoi Shiro is great. I need to check out Akai Itou as well.

Flowers is another Yuri VN I have to play through.

I love reading VNs but I need to be invested in them to finish them. I played through the entire Kawakami war segment of Majikoi for example because it was so good but waited a few weeks before finishing Chris's path simply because I wasn't invested.

Pretty much the reason I stopped Hollow Ataraxia, because there's no hook for me to drag me in.

you know what I mean. Anything that requires me to concentrate for a longer period of time. Whenever there's some huge wall of text post on Holla Forums I don't often read it fully either. My attention span is that of a child's

I'm the same but I've gotten into reading translated web novels, a korean Light Novel, and Fanfiction.

Not sure why I didn't expect that to happen with the spoilers.

Greater Y/u/ria shall conquer the earth.

It's a shame but Steam has only shitty VNs or Sekai project shit and they don't deserve a dime. seek Fuwanovel torrents, the best VNs i have ever read is: Ever17, Fate/Stay, Muv Luv Alternative, Rewrite, Steins gate, Grisaia, Phantom of Inferno, Tsukihime and Umineko.

i like VNs and i agree with that, unless is something like Sengoku Rance which has plenty of actual gameplay, VNs are just interactive digital books and i have no problem with that.

no but it looks quite fishy

Apparently it's the PS4/Vita translation and someone ported it over to the JAP PC version. Not sure if it would work though but it's worth a look.

I recommend Unteralterbach, it's actually a really well made VN with some good humor.
I came for the porn but stayed for the story.

Also don't believe anyone who tells you to read Muv-Luv Alternative, even if you ignore all the problems with the story and characters the pacing is so slow that you'll get bored before you finish it.
