Expanding Pokemon Red

Hey guys. I'm making a RAM hack of Pokemon Red. It's like a ROM hack, except I'm not limited by GameBoy hardware. I can add as many levels as I want, add modern gameplay features, modern graphics etc.

I've gotten to point where I've replicated the game in a larger screen size, and am about to start adding custom stuff. I figured I'd ask you guys for ideas for what direction I should take this.

So far I was thinking:

- Being able to say "yes" to the guy north of cerulean who recruits you to join Team Rocket
- Being able to go west of Viridian City / Route 23 into Johto
- Canonizing glitches/rumors (i.e. have Missingno. have significance to the story, something's actually under the truck in the S.S. Anne, etc)
-Wild encounters in overworld
-Battles dont suck
-Pokemon die instead of faint (aka nuzlocke)
-Non-shitty dialogue

Any ideas or suggestions?

Vid related, it's what I have so far

Why is it called Read-Only Memory if people are clearly hacking and altering it?

Hope you enjoy your C&D letter, idiot. Next time stop attention whoring and finish your project before wanting to show it off.

all of those ideas are garbage that some 13 year old would think is cool, OP.

...

I think Dragon Quest Monsters would be more fun to do this with, but Pokemon Red gets nostalgia points. Why not Pokemon Yellow? You could add an NPC that teaches your Pikachu Surf. Also don't bother explaining Missing No. since Pokemon Sun/Moon are already hinting at its possibility as canon. It'd just make your work seem tacky.

OH and put Mew under the truck. After the battle, catch or faint, a scientist comes up and THAT can unlock w/e story crap you want.

Also make Nuzlocke an option at the start. Forcing it would get old and limits overall appeal.

you should make nuzlocke stuff a choice you can toggle

Fill me on, nigger. The last game I played was Diamond.

I'm not fucking mad it's being made, I'm mad he's doing the same shit everyone else does which leads to an eventual C&D.

Good luck man

hownewru

Fair point, though I don't see a name or e-mail or any other way Nintendo could identify him. So long as he keeps his head down, he should be fine.

I really hate fainting, though.

I'll make the game in such a way that dead Pokemon don't suck in the same way that it does in traditional games. I want to make this an adult-oriented game. Lots of blood and shit. I was thinking having Red have a baseball bat or a katana or something he can just use to kill Pokemon (in overworld) instead of risking your mons. I'm even thinking of having all battles be in overworld, so you could just run away (even from trainer battles) if it gets shitty. And maybe being able to revive one dead Pokemon once you arrive in Lavender Town, too.

I'm staying user.

You can't alter the memory in real time. You can only make new ROM to then use after you've made it.

Yeah, that's why I'm calling it a RAM hack, I'm reading/modifying the game's ROM while it's running in the emulator

I'd go for the Monster Rancher model. Monsters can be injured in battle and need time to recover, sometimes even needing extended hospital care time. They can die in battle if something retarded happens like a young weak monster getting his shit slapped by an old heavily experienced one. They also naturally die after a certain life span that varies depending on type of monster. Though, MR kind of kills things off a bit too fast for my taste. Also they can die sooner if they have a more stressful life.

You can freeze an old monster that is about to die and merge him with another old monster that is about to die, and it makes a new monster that has a stat boost and move inheritance from the ones that were used to create it. In Monster Rancher 3 they made it so a heart item is left behind after a death and that item instead can be used on a new monster to inherit some stats.

I like all of those ideas. Make the protag customizable.

Wew laddy.

You had something going with your OP post, but you went full retard here.

Hm, interesting idea. I'll check that game out.

It's just an idea I thew out. That's why I'm posting here before I commit to anything.

...

Replace fainting with death and replace hms with items like sword for using cut so I don't need to waste the moveslot

and you ruined it. You had somthing good and lost it with your retarded grade school edge.

Okay, jesus christ. It's stupid. Fine. It was just an idea I threw out. Can we move on please lol

No. Its time for bullying, because its obvious you didnt have enough in school.

Congratulations, you've actually came up with something worse than Gen 6

Thats pretty neat user, did you fork the Red and Blue disassembly?

Nah, not a fork. I use the disassembly as a reference, though. It wouldn't be possible without it.

I'm running a vanilla pokered.gbc in an emulator, and running my own engine alongside it. I'm reading/writing from the game's memory while it runs.

B-b-but having pokemon die males the game feel more mature user!

Fuck off you dumb nigger, he's programming and listening to his audience to see what his consumer wants in a product, literally exactly what the gaming industry ought to be doing

dont pretend that it wouldn't be satisfying to actually kill those zubat fucks in every cave

Making actions have consequences and actually using strategy each match so you think your each move carefully. IT's a good gameplay mechanic is all.

When did Holla Forums oppose any idea that could be fun

What emulator are you running it on?

Alright, sounds ok–

–and ruined it. Good job, autismo.

Prepare to be bullied, nerd.

you done did it user

shit tier edgelord stuff that doesn't belong in a children's game.

Okay, so to recap:

Good:
-Being able to say "yes" to the guy north of cerulean who recruits you to join Team Rocket
-Being able to go west of Viridian City / Route 23 into Johto
-Canonizing glitches/rumors (i.e. have Missingno. have significance to the story, something's actually under the truck in the S.S. Anne, etc)
-Wild encounters in overworld
-Battles dont suck
-Non-shitty dialogue
-HMs are items or something like Sun/Moon (dont need to use up moves)
-Story branch when you find Mew under the truck
-Customizable character (maybe partway through the game)

50/50:
-Pokemon die instead of faint

Horribly bad, so bad that it completely derailed this thread:
-Red having a weapon, blood, gore, etc

MR2 is the best in the franchise, you can safely ignore the others.

Depends on what you want to do with it. I wouldn't like for it to be given dialogue and story attention, but it could be interesting for you to put in some other glitch pokemon as easter eggs.

put brothels and strip clubs in it

make misty strip after you beat her

Elaborate.
If you're going to have pokemon dying instead of fainting you will need to recharacterize the world.

There are plenty of shitty flash knock offs that try to make pokemon porn games. Go google it/use newgrounds.

Explain. What do you actually mean to do? There are a lot of good ways to go with this.
Hah. Who's going to write it? You?
You mean on the little 8x8 sprite? What's to customise?

Last panel related.

Why can't game companies just leave shit alone. Fucking hell. This is almost as bad as when companies incorporate fan theories and other stupid plebbit-tier shit.

Probably the best way to handle nuzlocke. Makes things less tedious.

Are you 14?

Coming Never Ever! New Pokemon: EdgeRed Edition
Features:

Future GOTY and HGOTY right here

I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic because an overly edgelord version of pokemon actually sounds like a lot of fun. Something gruesomely real, confrontational and goes too far to make outsiders feel sick, but still has fun/challenging nuzlocke gameplay.

sounds like smt

Not entirely sure yet. I'd need to prototype a shitton before I'd come to anything conclusive. But the status quo sucks ass. NPC battles and wild encounters are tedious at best, excruciating at worst.

I would keep the type matchups, stats and movesets. The general formula for how attacks work would still be in tact. Everything else would be thrown out.

My first prototype will probably be something completely in the overworld. You'd use the analog stick to move your Pokemon and then press A/B/X/Y to use your respective attack. The way attacks would work is exactly the same, for the most part. Stuff like status conditions would need to be reworked.

One obvious benefit I see from this is wild encounters wouldn't be nearly as annoying. A Zubat would just appear in the overworld, and "run" would literally just be running away from it. If you want to battle the Zubat then you'd send out a Pokemon and attack it.

Also, this "edgy" mockery shit is really getting old. At least come up with something original instead of copying what the last idiot said.

Why not make an original game?

Why not suck my dick?

There isn't a mouth small enough.

...

I think it was a webcomic similar to this, in which a female trainer had a pokemon(forgot which one was it), which had sex with other pokemons in order to capture them. In the end it's discovered that that Team Rocket had an underground pokemon sex-slave joint going.

Fuck outta here Ben Shapiro

If it's about the name, I still had it from a shitposting thread back on Holla Forums
If it's about the webcomic, it was story-timed here on Holla Forums a few months ago.

I bet it tastes like literal shit.

Pokemon always lacked a good story to compete with its core gameplay, try going into that direction.

how about using pokemon blue instead

Then you immediately post this weak shit . Just cop this one on the chin, faggot. You're getting way too defensive.

Anyway, it seems like you just have a problem with turned based JRPGs overall, not just Pokemon. You basically want to turn it into a real-time SRPG or something? You're fine with the how the fights "work", but you don't like actually fighting people? I'm a bit confused.
Your game would play a bit like Mana, I'm guessing, but with Pokeymans. That could actually work.

Missingno causes insanity to NPCs, forcing them to realize they are in the matrix.

why dont you get a 3ds devkit and rebuild gen3 on sun moon engine? or do a romhack of sun moon that resembles Red

Dude, just don't stick any fan fic bullshit in.

This alone could make your hack super popular with the FNAF/Undertale crowd, just warning you.

THIS

Include several encounters with Mewtwo through out the game at various points. Let's say three times. First two times has him in that armour from the movie which inhibits his strength and then the final battle can be in the cave where it always was and without the armour. Just an idea.

Honestly, I'm both sarcastic and eager to see something like that. If OP can deliver, I would hope he delivers something, but I would really hope he delivers his original idea because fuck playing it safe. Playing safe is what lead games to stagnate. We got amazing games and franchises making some of the most nonsensical and fantastical ideas into games and creating things that can only be played and not experienced as a movie. But then we threw it all away for boring realism and "cinematic" gameplay. Fuck movies. Games have the highest potential in entertainment and as such make the unbelievable work.

So if OP does come back and he was legit, I hope he sees that at least one person has a hard vote for edgy, mature, and batshit insane pokemon red. When you compare it, what would be more interesting and exciting; an "improved" pokemon red or playing as Edgy Red "Redgy" and seeing and doing bizarre things you can't get out of a regular pokemon game? I know that Holla Forums is one person and a pretty cool guy, but I'll say that Holla Forums needs to realize we desperately need ideas that normalfags will think are absolutely retarded but we know will be exciting as hell to play.

Just like, think grezzo 2 plus postal 2, plus pokemon. I would sell all my vidya just to play something like that for 2 minutes. I would spend hours shilling that and calling plebs out for denying how amazing that is just for existing. I yearn for the day games return to the fantastical, the nonsensical, and the unbelievable. That's when we'll get fun back and new gameplay ideas. I'm not implying that this game could start all that, but just having one more like that is a step in the right direction.

You should make more shiny forms that increase in rarity, for example a normal Gyarados is light blue, a rare gyarados dark blue and a super rare is red. Also, more gender differences could be cool

My only options were either pokered or pokecrystal (they're the only games that have been fully disassembled).

And this is going to be for haxed 3DS.

I don't want to be edgy for the sake of being edgy. I want the blood/gore to be tasteful. If anything, I'd make it more like Killer7. Postal is too much.

I hate the tech/gaming industry as the next guy, but swinging in the full opposite direction isn't what I want to do.

Good idea. Probably won't implement it. Too much artwork.

Forget everything you have planned, make a Pokemon game about being a cute girl doing cute things. And if you're feeling lewd, cute things doing cute girls, you've got over 100 cute things already in game.

How about little easter eggs like bringing a Venusaur and a Blastoise to Bill's machine and combining them into Venustoise? Also are you considering adding in Gen 2-7 Pokemon in? Since you are planning on adding Johto the Gen 2 Pokemon should be obligatory.

Just the engine limitations themselves. Why the fuck would you pick Red as your baseline? Just like the retards behind Prism building it on Crystal.

And you fags laughed at me

Because it's the most documented generation of games to work on, and the Gen 1 games were fully disassembled first.
Same with Crystal, already romhacked well and thus has documentation to help create romhacks for it.

And yet you're doing that exact thing.

Well for starters how about cleaning it up a bit and compiling a file containing what you have right now as a proof of concept so we know you're not just talking out of your ass.

Not doing Gen 3+. If I do Gen 2, it would be a small subset.

Whoops, I meant to respond to this one. See above.

nintendo's officially ruled that you can make a fangame for pokemon provided you don't use more than the first 151 pokemon

wut

What are your limitations? Give examples instead of "I can add modern graphics", and "features"

OPTIONAL nuzlocke
don't get edgy with any dialogue re-writes, write as if it's gotta actually fit in a pokemon game
wild encounters in overworld is sorta odd, could work, but I think just putting some grass in certain places in cities might work better
on that note, redesign the towns slightly, just improve only
"Battles don't suck" explain this one, you sound like you have an idea but didn't type it.
"ie have missingno. have significance to the story" - shit nigga stuff like this makes me think you're about to go full retard with this. Don't ever go full retard.
Being able to explore johto might b neato, but if you're able to do this you must be able to add new pokes to Red. If you can do that, what's limiting you? Add more than johto, like the islands from FireRed/LeafGreen. Putting more pokemon than the Kanto Johto pokes only might also add a lot to the game, make a huge variety available on all the routes. Every time you walk somewhere new, new types of pokemon are there. Make it diverse, but don't just randomly sprinkle them around either. Think geographically with your placements. Some can break this rule to make routes interesting, but don't just randomize everything.

Why don't you just make your own game user. No one but autists will give a fuck about your bullshit.

Considering how specialized and optimized the original game was for the Gameboy, wouldn't it be really hard to add those features? You might have better luck porting it to some 3DS homebrew engine.
Whatever you do, here's some feature that shouldn't be too hard:

As for Missingno being hinted as canon in Sun/Moon, here's how it fits in. Sun/Moon is about some weirdo who uses something she shouldn't to rip holes in reality, from which beings that should not exist emerge. It's kinda Lovecraftian, but without actually getting dark. Ultra Beasts are pretty much Pokemon from another reality.
If you want to tie that to the first games, have there be one of these rips in Cinnabar island, on the east coast. That's where you find Missingno, which looks weird and has multiple forms because it exists beyond comprehension. Make it a secret boss or something, and bring in the rest of the Ultra Beasts if you want.

This is really cool. I've always dreamed about doing something like this but I've never really known how. What library are you using as your emulator? I also like this name… "RAM hack". I hope this project goes well user.

Do they have any official rules on Zelda and Metroid as well? I want to make something but I don't want to work on it for a year only to get C&D'ed

If we use Fire Red as the base I might be able to help. Haven't ROM hacked in ages though so I might be a tad rusty but hey if others are down to help out let's form a team.

I'd rather have a pokemon die female if you know what I mean.

Just make something similar, draw it similar, title it similar, but don't use exact names or sprites or other assets, and heavily tout it as "inspired by". It's not hard to avoid the C&D shit, I'm surprised so many people constantly fuck it up by using actual trademarks all the fucking time.

You deserve the C&D tip I'm going to submit to nintendo.

...

I'm intrigued, go on.

There's no reason to use fucking trademarked characters and franchises to do that though, it's only going to end in tears. Trademark law is fucked because the holders literally have to fight fucking everybody or they lose it to the next person that touches it. It's like sticking your hand in a fucking lion cage and blaming the lion when it fucking eats you. It's what lions fucking do.

That's a lie, and it's literally never happened.

Same as any other game. It's not a ROM hack. I'm writing my own engine and running it alongside an emulator. Hence, RAM hack.
Wild encounters are 99% shit you dont want, NPC battles require no skill or critical thought (just grind to a high enough level).

What's great about Pokemon is that everyone and their grandma knows all the type matchups, pokemon, and what moves do. I can leverage that. I don't know what the final product will be. That's what prototyping is for. My first prototype will probably be realtime with positioning, and have ABXY be the different attacks. But I'll probably try 10 or 20 different gameplay mechanics before knowing what works.

It's not a ROM hack. And fuck the newer games. Gen I & II are the only canon. III was okay, but only for its engine and ROM hacking scene.

mGBA. And thanks, me too. Hopefully I don't burn out. I really want to release what I have now, but I need to lay low and stay user.

I really wanted to use Gen III as the base but the pokeruby disassembly isn't done yet. :/

instead of that, have red be able to throw rocks to do some extra damage and possibly stun an enemy mon, possibly making it easier to run away or do a crit

> For a trademark registration to remain valid, the owner must continue to use it. In some circumstances, such as disuse, failure to assert trademark rights, or common usage by the public without regard for its intended use, it could become generic, and therefore part of the public domain.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trademark_infringement
If you don't defend your trademarks and copyright they can be forfeited and become public domain. It's part of Media Law 101 that any journalist has to study at university (which I sadly did before realising the entire profession is fucking bullshit).
Bear in mind that a trademark, such as Pokemon, is different from copyright, and copyright cannot be lost due to it being undefended, but a trademark can.

No sure what that would entail but it sounds fun.
Sounds great, could even have ferry to other regions if you wanted to push this thing as far as you could.
Just remember the timeline.
Nope, adding making glitches canon sounds gay as fuck.
Actually putting Mew under the truck would be cool however.
I've always hated the fact most modern JRPG's seem to have done away with random encounters and opted for on-overworld encounters, but that's just me.
Good.
Make that an option instead of forcing it on the player.
Go for it.

Adding in some extra battle features would be amazing. Keep the dialogue fitting to the tone of what Pokemon was. It's a dreamy 90's children anime world, like Sailor Moon, filled with comfy, nostalgic vibes and a dreamlike atmosphere.

Make a nuzlocke mode for battles instead. At the beginning of the game you can start a nuzlocke by choosing the option to do so. Make multiple save files and alternate routes, say, being able to skip getting a starter Pokemon or being able to rush out into the forest that surrounds Pallet Town and go on your own in an open world version of the game. This will add replay value and make the game exciting and fun for multiple playthroughs, especially for nuzlockes. A few new towns and cities would be great as well. Expand Kanto and Johto and make them feel like a real world and go beyond Game Freaks shitty design, and really let the player do whatever they want. Game Freak has trainers with only 2 pokemon, items that you only can ever get one of, linear maps, shitty watered-down RPG battles that focus on RNG and mindgames for the higher levels of play, and a lack of actual RPG roleplaying fuel.

What I'm saying is that for Pokemon to be something amazing, and even "adult" like you said, it should be open. Immerse the player into the game and adapt Pokemon for an adult mind rather than a childs mind. What you suggested earlier wasn't adult; it was early teenager stuff. Adult would be having difficult decisions, a lot of open paths, very advanced gameplay to the point where creativity and intelligence rules the playing field, and overall more indepth and fleshed out than what we have. I very much so appreciate your efforts and the webm you posted looks glorious, so I'm looking forward to it.

A way to interact with your Pokemon would go very nicely with the advanced battles. Advanced battles would potentially go into the depth of what each species is like, giving them more than just 4 moves and a bunch of stats. Look up YouTube videos on how animals fight in the wild, and then apply that to the dreamy, usually lighthearted world of Pokemon to figure out a perfect mixture of "dreamy 90's anime" and "nomadic beastmaster animal taming and nature conquering sim". Joining Team Rocket seems like an excellent idea and having the options to steal things from people, including Pokemon and items, at the cost of having people coming and battling you for being a TR member and having to look out for the cops would make a very fun and interesting gameplay experience. You could potentially have a mechanic where your Pokemon get taken away and you need to find a way to break out of your jail cell and get them back. And what happens if Team Rocket wins? They want power and money, so do they take it from people whenever they want? Do they sneak back off into the inner workings of society and manipulate the general public to maximize profits and shape the world in their image? There are a lot of good things to potentially explore here as a writer, IF you wish to make a more fleshed out world.

If you're looking for gameplay however, a more fleshed out version of Kanto/Johto and exciting new gameplay and battle features would probably be best. Don't overwork yourself and don't try and put in everything people are saying unless it fits your image and you think it's something good, because overall this is your project. I'm speaking as someone who has a lot of experience with vidya and creating things.

Good luck on your ramhacking journey and I wish you the best of luck. Know your limits and take it easy, but also don't be afraid to push yourself a little so you can grow. Thanks for putting the time and effort into making something like this; I respect that kind of passion a shit ton.

You have great taste. Gen 1 and 2 had the best atmosphere to 'em. The Pokemon fandom is gonna screech and yell because they take this shit like a religion, but fuck man, the Genwun experience is something beautiful.

...

Johto shouldn't be primarily Kanto Pokemon and there is only a 100 of them, but you don't use the disassembly so I don't know how hard it is to insert things your way.
Also since you won't add the future evolutions of old Pokemon you should try buffing them and others like Farefetch'd so they'll be better in battle.

Destroyed any interest I had right there.

I'm feelin this. Could you elaborate further on "dreamy" bit? Never watched Sailor Moon.

RBY took place 3 years before GSC, so it would be plausible to have only Kanto mons.

Hm, I dunno, I never bought the idea that Pokemon were "newly discovered" in GSC when they were just basically next door. They dropped that idea in fairly short order. I'd also like to note that apparently (based off of a single claim someone made and looking at the index numbers of Pokemon) there were supposed to be about 50 more Pokemon in RBY, but for unclear reasons (Gen 1 had a lot of development hell going on) they ended up being cut. It's theorized that most of them were eventually added in Gen 2, but it's not clear which ones. My question is why go to Johto if there's no new Pokemon? Just because? I mean at least in GSC they had some new gyms and while people want to complain about some new Pokemon being Kano exclusive at least it gives you a reason to go to Kanto that isn't just Gym Leaders.

Story. The burned tower would be not burned 3 years previous. I was also thinking about having Oak's Parcel being the GS Ball, and since route 23 is in Viridian, you can skip the Kanto story and immediately go west to Azalea Town and catch Celebi to travel through time.

The idea is to add on top of Pokemon Red. Following the formula is Game Freak's job.
