I'm more afraid of killing my fucking laser with that game. I'd love to play Shenmue 1&2 on my Dreamcast, but I can't destroy my dedicated Power Stone machine.

Get a GDemu. It replaces the Drive with a SDcard reader that runs the game just fine. I got one and have happily packed up my GDROM drive since. Best part is it can run things like fan patches, such as the excellent Shenmue Undub that restores the far superior japanese voice over to Shenmue 1 and provides a save file that can carry over to 2.

I don't trust myself enough to fuck with that shit and I've seen the pics. I hold my Dreamcast very dear and don't want to see it defiled like that.

I'll just wait and see if the HD rumours turn out to be true or I'll simply by a second one and mod the shit out of that.

See and I didn't see it as defiling my childhood dreamcast, I saw it as helping it's reach it's final limitless form. Still, to each their own, getting a second one to mod isn't a bad idea if you feel that way. That said it's an easy mod so don't feel anxious when the time comes because it's honestly as easy as unscrewing a few things, unplugging the drive, then attaching the GDemu and screwing it in. Nice clean and basic mod, literally just a drive replacement in that it's even designed to use the same plug.

Compatibility is really high. I've ran in to one minor glitch (Opening of Skies of Arcadia freezes, but I can still get past it and play the game no problem), other than that it's tested amazingly. And that glitch could be firmware, which can be updated. I've tested it a bunch too, with most of the dreamcast's big games. Price is 115 euro. I forgot how much that is in burgerbux. The thing is the guy who makes them does so himself, so he only does it in batches, making it a little hard to get an order in. If you go on the site right now orders are locked and you just have to watch the site for when he talks about making a batch, and hope you get lucky with the timing (he puts it up at various hours so that people in different time zones can get it in different batches). It's honestly more effort to get one ordered than it is to install it.

I can easily get 2 used and refurbished Dreamcast for that. Guess I'll stick with the OG hardware for now.

But it's still interesting to note and I'll keep an eye on it for the future. Thanks!

They changed their ToS/Code of Conduct to ban the language to help ad revenue because they believed they had obtained a large enough community to thrive without the people who "got them started". Nintendo showing some signs of decline and they really cut down their game releases, pretty disappointing.

Issue wasn't the changes. Issue was they were perfectly fine allowing people to say nigger until they thought they didn't need those people anymore. They saw a chance to start shoving adverts onto the site even though they had a patreon that they claimed fully funded the site at certain pledge amounts. They turned their backs on a community they curated because they saw a chance for big normalfag bux and most people didn't take kindly to what they saw as being used. The reason for the control scheme is two-fold. For one Tank Controls were a popular thing at the time and often how developers would deal with making 3D games on controllers with D-pads and you have to remember this game was in development since the Saturn. That said I think the real reason they did it was because they wanted the controls for the fights to be tight and feel like Virtua Fighter (this was, after all, the Virtua Fighter RPG before it became Shenmue). Mind you, the camera sadly fucks the otherwise tight fighting controls so it's a bit of a mixed bag.

Because all the xbox exclusives sucked and nobody wants to go through the effort of reverse engineering MS's retarded custom implementation of DirectX 2.756 or whatever the fuck it is.

Because of a huge number of reasons that don't apply to every game, various of them of them got sequels like NG, MechAssault, Phantom Crash and MWC was pretty much an Armored Core spin off (gameplay wise)
Because since they sold not so great or were no longer marketable to the cinematic audience of the 7th gen, they were shelved like countless other franchises. According to you, if a game is good its surely going to get a sequel (or several ones which is the case here with games that already had a bunch) right? That hasn't been the case many times, Panzer Dragoon and JSR are fucking amazing and Sega refuses to make new entries for examplr.

If a game sells well or is celebrated as a good title (even if it doesn't move tons of copies) it will still get sequels or (in the case of the current gen) digital rereleases of the game. So why has this not happened for these amazing exclusives? Is there no demand for these amazing titles?

Well, generally a console with good games tends to get emulated really fast once the means becomes available. The fact that it has been nearly a decade without xbox emulation kind of implies the games weren't memorable enough to want to replay at all.
I didn't own an xbox because the exclusives didn't appeal to me, that is why it was posed as a question with an obvious answer. Games that people want to play generally get emulated far more quickly than games nobody gives a shit about and it appears that people give so little shit about the games on the xbox they won't even emulate the console.

that's nice, it undeniably gives day time scenes a more etheral quality which isn't necessarily a good thing, but does give the lighting in more scenes a more realistic touch, and night time scenes look far, far better on the xbox.

there is wii u emulation because the creator has access to crucial system documentation which is why he has evaded making the emulator open source and why it'll probably remain that way. The hardware is as similar to the wii as the gamecube is to the xbox 360. Such, some of the same vendors (ibm and ati) have their hardware inside of very similar architectures even, but getting one emulated is far different from getting another. You have a very clear misunderstanding on how these things work and are developed.

I never said that. The problem is a mix of a lack of enthusiasm/interest, difficulty of working on the hardware, and how much is actually flat out unknown about the system. The biggest obstacles are graphics and sound emulation, each game also has its own unique drivers that were packed with them, so creating support for them is another nightmare, as well the bios does some unusual things which can't be easily emulated, namely with how it interacts with the hard drive through a locking/unlocking check which is also how the system stores its unique ID. It's a very complicated piece of hardware and software, and one which most emulator authors - people who do it for free out of passion (something which the xbox's fantastic library undeniably lacks from its audience) aren't really willing to tackle. It's a monumental task.

So you admit that what I was saying is true: the library isn't exactly getting anyone hooked on getting that one game running. I never said it was the only reason, I'm sure there are technical hurdles, but the library with a lack of killer titles is a key part of that lack of passion from developers to get it running. And one last time: That motion blur is fucking horrible. There, you can emulate Shenmue 1 and 2, in high resolutions, and even take advantage of transferring your save game between them, that is if you're playing the PAL versions.

Shenmue was supposedly envisioned as havng SIXTEEN CHAPTERS. Of course, Yu's had to cut back his vision after the first game didn't sell, as 2 is a combination of chapters 3, 4, 5. The "second chapter" involved Ryo on a boat and was a manga, I believe.

I think Yu might be using Kikestarter money to fulfill that 16 chapter ideal. I wish he kept his lip shut about making more games, we don't want 3 to fail, as we'll be back to where we were after the cliffhanger from the second game.

I'm not saying one version is better than the other, they are both better in different ways, some may prefer having a more stable framerate and better rounded visuals at the cost of some more questionable visual changes. So what's the best way to emulate Shenmue? I tried that nulldc that claims it's made for it with the PAL Undub and it's a party of crashes. The English dub is beyond hockey, but lovable. I'd rather play the undub though.

I'd rather have everything look unified than one or two super clean and nice textures in stark contrast to everything else. Again: I've played the game, know what it looks like idiot. It doesn't look better in all spots, and I honestly think the lazy job they did only working on some things and slapping on bloom looks ugly compared the ORIGINAL vision of the developers. bloom is a controversial addition, but it absolutely improves night time scenes. The original game lacks even shadowing for buildings, but the Xbox version adds it. You have mistaken a lack of flat shading for bloom, this is a basic technical terminology for 3D graphics.

You don't like mipmapping and prefer shimmering distant textures? They're really distractin and absolutely hurt the final image composition.
You don't like having shadows for buildings? The original game looks nice on Dreamcast but many scenes feel very flat. Not to mention the persistent load times, Xbox's HDD loading is a huge improvement there.
You don't like cleaner models? There is a point to be made that some of the lower quality models can clash, but you are exaggerating the extent of this.
You don't like a smoother, solid framerate? Are you one of those people who also believes 60fps isn't good because it's not as cinematic?

It is slow to start off, since nothing's really kicked off yet other than your dad dying. 30 minutes isn't enough time for anything to happen.

That said, if you don't like the idea of looking around, talking to people and some puzzle solving, the series isn't for you.

Shenmue 2 has a lot more shit going on, but I wouldn't recommend skipping 1.
