I'm fairly convinced it's going to be Blue Mage. While the Samurai reasoning is good and sound, I just think they're going to save that to use as the big draw for 5.0.

if we run with that, then what would BLU do? how will they gain their skills? will it start at 50 like rdm? that would sidestep the normal skill progression other jobs have up until 50, and allow for quest-based skill learning where you have to go find some monster to use magic on you so you can learn it.

i suppose there would be justification for how the PC would already know enough to be BLU 50 in that, by this point, every warrior of light character has had literally everything thrown at them, up to and including large celestial objects dropped on them, as well as time manipulation and blinding rays of divine light.

What the fuck are you on about? Blue Mages have nearly always been a physical job supported by monster attacks. Usually they use swords, but sometimes they've used whips, spears… cooking utensils…

i suppose that depends on your definition of blue mage. but one thing that every blue mage has had in common, be it Strago or Quistis or Quina or what have you, is that they need to personally experience the magic of a monster to then master and use that magic. and that's the key; it's magic.

and yes, most blue mages in the FF series have had a physical element to them, moreso than being purely magical (i.e. Quina vs. Strago), but it seems odd to me that they would add two magical/physical hybrid jobs in a single expansion. that would dilute the pool, no? if RDM and BLU both play as a magical/physical hybrid, then it's going to be that much harder to make any kind of differentiation between the two. if that's the route they take, it seems like a bad decision to me, so i doubt it'll happen. that means it'll either be purely physical, or purely magical, but justifying "blue mage" for a purely physical class makes no sense at all.

So how does tanking feel like as a Dark Knight? I remember them being badass in FFXI but I'm new to FFXIV and haven't even reached max level as WAR yet. Which of the two, WAR and DRK, is more difficult and involved?

Drk has mp management, which I've seen countless tanks mess up. War is a bit more involved in terms of abilities, but no class in this game is really that difficult to use. Most of the difficulty comes from memorizing the fights and knowing when to use your cooldowns. Take them both into potd and play with them yourself. Take War to 50, so that you can unlock HW and Drk. You can't start as a Drk. Then take them both into potd and play from lvl 1-60 in palace to get an idea of how they play.

Haven't checked out potd yet, but is there any idea in running it, reward-wise, before level 60?

ive got all three tanks at 60, and if i were to compare war vs. drk it would be "technical vs. reflex."

the addition of Deliverance for DPS (and Fell Cleave/Decimate) gives war a lot more viability outside of just pure tanking. the prevalence of tank busters in Heavensward encounters means that war has a natural advantage with an on-demand -20% damage reduction buff, and the self heal/tp restore from Equilibrium gives war a great deal of staying power, whether tanking or DPSing. as a result of this, war shines when you know the fight. the war who knows when the busters are coming, when he can switch to Deliverance to more DPS, and when to use Berserk for max gain is what differentiates war as a tank.

drk lacks the on-the-spot mitigation of war, relying more on pld-like cooldown-based mitigation. however, drk tends to have a smoother hp restoration gain, as it's main combo consists of a high potency self-healing attack that can be buffed to 400 potency, with 100% of that damage healing you. war has superior healing overall when bloodbath is up, but drk surpasses it during the rest of the time. drk also has much stronger aoe capability, and requires much more OGCD management. hence why i say "technical vs. reflex." you'll be using OGCD skills at least once every other GCD, on average, as a drk. many times you'll be packing two OGCD's in between GCD skills. this makes drk much more frantic, but when done correctly it's very rewarding.

yeah, you get a lot of neat stuff from it, ranging from useless fireworks to glamour items that sell for quite a bit on the market board. however, i wouldn't focus on potd solely; use that for your major leveling, sure, but be sure to try out each dungeon in your level range a few times so you get a feel for the class in a real environment.

How does POTD compare to other ways of leveling? Does it grant you more XP/hour than say, running regular dungeons?

arguably, yes. as a tank, you should run your dungeon roulette when its available with bonus each day, and then you can do the highest level dungeon for where you are if you want a break, but in terms of xp/hr, going with potd is the way to go.

but it doesnt teach you your class worth shit unfortunately. you gotta go elsewhere for that

anything works really. i mean, the normal knife-ear and potato hatred of course, but go with whatever. lalafell drks are hilarious to watch, and taller characters in general make for better drks imo, since they go well with the tank armor/greatswords, but really it's just aesthetics.

as for the class you want to start with, mrd or gld, since drk will use skills from both. you want to get gld at least to 22, and mrd at least to 26, but if you plan on taking that class to 50 before you get to HW and unlock drk, then i would say gld to 22, then mrd up to 50, since gld/pld is painfully boring until level 54. mrd on the other hand is fun once you get overpower and bloodbath running together.

they did a great job of making fights that war and drk excel in for xpac, but pld is sort of the redheaded stepchild now. and while the me that played a war from the beginning of 2.0 on feels a certain schadenfreude at seeing pld's squirm at no longer being the #1 tank, i also would like to see all three tanks shine in their own way.

these balance issues come and go, a big issue with pld is the inherent simplicity in its design, meaning it can only be overpowered or underpowered and its extremely boring to play
they need to give pld some kind of class mechanic like warriors or dark knights, because right now the class is just combos and oGCD skills

The 50-60 drk storyline was a lame duck, because they already blew their load on the 30-50 storyline. The same goes for Sch and Whm. War's 50-60 story was a neat send off for the two brothers, but their 60-70 is going to fall into the same trap as many 50-60 storylines.

They need to let some of the job trainers fade into the background when their storylines are done. The history of the realm is also interesting. The book is also well put together. It's a big, heavy tome. Well worth the price.

If you focus on the main story quest (MSQ) it will pretty much power level you from 1-50 so that is the best way to do it. If you switch to a different combat class it gets a bonus to xp based on the difference between it and your highest leveled class. So pick whatever you want.

Nothing in the game is going to teach you that whether it be potd or regular dungeons. You have to go study someone else. potd is good for figuring out general rotations and gameplay, because everyone else there can carry you if you fuck up or suck. Try that in newer dungeons against regulars and you're just going to piss them off. Having said that, there isn't much expected of you in regular dungeons as tank other than holding aggro. Also, none of the general content will teach you what you need for difficult content. There is nothing outside of certain trials and raids that force tank swaps or even teach you to manage stacks of debuffs. You have to look up guides for that until you start recognizing SE's patterns.

potd is good xp when you're done with roulettes. As a tank, you can get into dungeons pretty quickly, so you may make more xp there. Feel free to jump in and give it a go.

Swift Caste, eye for an eye and blizzard 2. Blizzard 2, so that you can have the ability to aoe at lower levels. Whm gets the inferior virus. Surecast used to be pretty helpful during t6, but it's largely useless everywhere else.

Early tank is miserable, you will spent the entire early game using a 1 or 2 at most buttons rotation until you get to the real meat, but the whole ride will be nothing but shit.
The optimal way is to start as literally anything else and get a grasp of the game and then get the tank job later on and use your knowledge of mechanics and the bonus exp to rush through the early levels as quick and painlessly as possible
