CoD's problem is twofod; the gameplay hasn't gone full Ｃ Ｒ Ａ Ｙ Ｚ Ｅ Ｅ and the CoD audience doesn't want to be a Space-Marine cyborg.
They added wallrunning and double-jumping, but you still move slow as shit and still have the exact same map design and gunplay.
Also, the audience for CoD doesn't want to play as a robot or a augmented Space Marine badass, they want to play as a special forces soldier. They don't want to throw trucks at people or have dogfights in space, they just want to pretend their some Delta Force mothefucker.

The normalfags at work seem to agree. They're pissed that Call of Duty is in space with future shit and jetpacks. They don't want all that, or they'd be playing Halo. Having marathoned it, it is sort of fun, I won't lie. It looks great at times, and its a rare case in a CoD game where the campaign is the best thing about the game itself.

That being said, it feels like its being held back because it has to be a CoD game. Multiplayer feels like a reskin of Black Ops 3, and Zombies mode just didn't hit that sweet spot that was in WaW or BO1. There is a genuine case of a good game potentially lying in here begging to get out.

i disagree, while i don't enjoy either, one of them is a turn based rpg with the only depth being how long you grind. the story itself is always shit (most text you read being canned responses from "challenge"rs) and the only reason it is popular is because it appeals the natural desire to hoard. sure call of duty suffers from half life 2 cutscenes and qtes but pokemon is absolute bottom of the barrel crap. at least call of duty has some form of pleasurable content at the end of the rainbow whereas pokemon just successfully tricks you into thinking it will get better when it never does and all that grinding doesn't pay off at all when you beat elite 4 again and again with a single alakazam using the same move over and over again. pokemon is the worst videogame available in my opinion
