you might find it easier to color by making selections, go ahead and use the magic wand tool to select the area you want to color. you can use the lasso tool (both polygonal and regular versions) plus add and subtract (shift and alt) to make complex selections very quickly. additionally, editing your selection in quick mask mode allows you to make selections with partial opacity easily with any tool. once you do fill, learn the alpha lock and layer mask functions to then easily add details only to areas you've filled. saves time having to save selections or creating selections from pixels.
