I wish I could tell you. This happened around 2002. After 9/11 the /k/ommando in me went into a politics kick and I spent tons of time reading up on famous political leaders and rebellions throughout history, including the Civil War.

I blundered into that book somewhere around then, stood in an aisle for a half hour reading parts of it, and only remember that passage in particular because it was a shock at the time.

South was key in trading, since the crops like tobacco and cotton and more were grown in the southern states, shipped north to the mills and textiles and so forth to ship to Europe and abroad, which fueled for slave trade to ship to the Americas for more manpower to grow more crops, etc. It would have been harder moving crops from new Western territories and states, especially since there fucked up which were "slave" and "free" states compared to the best farmland.
