First of all consider that these "rumors" are from Eurogamer and Laura Kate Dale, despite popular belief these are NOT believable sources due to the fact that they just got the "leaks" from Nintendo's patents. NVidia has also gone on record saying that "The high-efficiency scalable processor includes an NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards." So obviously that means they're using Pascal due to the fact that Maxwell is no longer "top performing". Also consider that they don't say it's based on the X1 or anything of the sort, all they say is that it's a "custom tegra chip". which makes sense, and is probably why emily rodgers changed her leaks from "X1" to "Custom" since she knew that Nintendo has never used someone else's chip without modifications.

Another reason to call this rumor bullshit is because of the competition from Sony, Microsoft, Apple and Google. While Nintendo claims they won't compete with either of them, we all know that's bullshit due to the fact that Apple and Google is taking away the casual market while Microsoft and Sony are taking away the core market, and while Nintendo has one of the worst localization teams in the industry, they're not retarded when it comes to their own territory. They know that IF they want to sell this thing at launch then they need to use the latest ARM technology with innovative gimmicks, since ARM is dirt cheap, and the last time they pulled a Wii, it did worse than the GameCube.

So please consider the fact that not only are these rumors bullshit, but to NOT trust Emily Rodgers, Laura Kate Dale, Eurogamer, or any of these "leakers" that stole information from patents or just flat out got lucky. N64 gimmick was being 3d and 64-bit, and it was absolute shit at them. who cares about texture filtering and antialiasing when it chokes on couple of triangles and textures on screen. while PSX had woobly textures, it left plenty of space for more details.

Devs can good looking games off of weaker hardware once they get used to developing for it. The better looking ps2 games like FFXII came later into the system's life. Compare early and later PS3 or 360 and you'll see a similar trend. Of course you'd actually need devs to develop for you console for that to even happen. Objectively speaking when you compare the chipsets of each to one-another the ps2 is the weakest. Even the Dreamcast was stronger in some areas like color and, I believe, sound.

Virtual boy failed because it wasn't really supposed to be a console, it was like a tech demo that yokoi shat out because he was mad that they wouldn't let him retire.The gc failed because the games they made that people typically get Ninty consoles for were too different from the ones that went before them, wind waker was weird, sunshine was weird, adventures was weird, etc
And the third part titles were not as good as ps2/xbox, plus, the console wasn't as cheap as ps2 for a while. Wiiu failed because none of the games were "cool". The console's for kids, but the families that bought the wii didn't buy it because the advertising made it just seem like an expensive addon for the wii, and the library is so small that it didn't seem necessary to "upgrade" their wii, on top of that there was like no good advertising for it either. The dreamcast was too expensive and the titles were too strange. The advertising that a dying company can put out is always going to be small and risky. Availability was an issue too.

basically, what i'm saying is this: The console's success is not going to depend at all on whatever gimmick they use. I'll admit, i got a 3ds pretty quick after seeing the 3d on it, but i wouldn't have done it if there were no good games. PS2 graphics looked pitiful compared to the Xbox, especially the aliasing which was terrible and very noticeable on any tv. And I don't know what you are on about Halo 2, it runs very well, actually better than the first (better optimization).
It's true that the Xbox didn't have much in the way of exclusives, but had the absolute bestest versions of almost all console exclusive multiplats (only very few exceptions like with NFS Hot Pursuit 2) and even better than the pc versions sometimes. The difference in multiplats wasn't small like in the 7th and 8th gens, in many cases it was 240i+30fps+blurry textures+low draw distances (PS2) vs 480p+60fps+better textures+higher draw distances (Xbox).
