Yes, you'd just have to manually mod them, there's no Steam Workshop or anything.

I'd recommend getting Megadimension V-2 if your PC can handle it.

To add on to that, the mods are really simple to use most of the time. It'll be a drag-and-drop affair for most.

Yes, for the retranslations you'll just need to extract the data to where it says in the readme file. You used to need an alternate execute file but the new version doesn't, running it normally with the extracted data will give you the new translation.

I saw this game heavily discounted on Steam. What is it about anyway? Some sort of rhythm game? It's super weird.

In short, they are JRPGs that parody the video game industry.
They have decent gameplay and cutscenes are told Visual Novel style.

If you want to get into the series, note that the first game on steam (Re;birth 1) isn't in the current canon universe. It's a good game but nothing in it matters. If you get hooked on it, be aware that everything including character interactions change in the second game.
If you just want to play one of them, however, then I recommend V-II, which has the best gameplay in the series and the best written story. That said, it is the third game in the current canonverse, though the second game in the canonverse is ignored entirely in V-II.
The canonverse as of now goes Re;birth 2 to Re;birth 3 to V-II.
I recommend RB2 then V-II and then go back to RB3 if you aren't burnt out on Nep by that time.
RB2 and RB3 both have retranslation patches that you need in order to play them though.

Do you like relatively simple JRPGs? Then you might have some fun with this. If you want to get acquainted with the characters then try Rebirth 1; if you want a long and somewhat more refined experience and don't mind jumping in, Neptunia VII might be an option.

The games are fun but they crib more from 90s and 80s JRPGs than recent ones.

Hey, /nep/. Long time lurker, first time poster here.

A quick question. I have played the original HN and mk2 back in the day, as well as a bit of Victory.

I was planning on picking up re;birth 3 in the closing hours of the Steam sale (and potentially 1 and 2 as well) but I wondered whether that version or the Vita version are considered superior. I imagine the resolution/frame rates are better on PC, but there is something to be said for the portability of the Vita version.

Translation quality is not important because I plan to play them in Japanese anyway.

Which would you recommend? Vita or PC?

I will also probably pick up VII after completing re;birth 3. In that case, PS4 or PC?

The difference between platforms is fairly negligible. I think the PC versions have cheaper DLC but had a fer performance issues and bugs at launch that should have been fixed by now. They'll run at a higher framerate if you have decent hardware on your PC, but the games were also well-optimized for their original release on consoles so it's not a huge difference.

Since you're not bothered by translations and editing you could go with either version. It depends entirely on whether you want to play RB3 while traveling or VII on a TV screen I guess.

All the Re;Birth games and V-II can set their render resolution to 4k (with a small mod) which makes the games look way better, even on a 1080p monitor. You don't even need very powerful hardware for this, I got 60fps in all games with a GTX 770. This may be worth keeping in mind if you want the games to look better. It's pretty important to have a controller for your PC if you decide to get that version, because it plays way better than keyboard+mouse. Also, make sure you play V-II. It's a far better game than RB3.

could you guys elaborate why you think controller is so much better? the mainline nep games are fine with just using keyboard imho (well, I tried VII with a ds3, but after beating rb1-3 and VII using keyboard, I just switched back to keyboard…)

Having 360° character movement controls with the thumbsticks feels way better, and with a controller you can just lay back and sit in any position or at any distance you like. It just feels more comfy and smooth. I use a controller for most games that don't absolutely require the mouse. Only rarely do I see someone who prefers keyboard+mouse for these type of games. I'm using the Xbox 360 controller though, I don't find Playstation controllers as comfortable.
