I've played all the Shantae games, and this one is probably the best. It's not metroidvania, though; you replay stages when you get new abilities to find all the items and secrets. So it's more like Megaman.
It's biggest flaw is that it's way to easy. If you unlock all the gallery art you get an item that gives you infinite magic, combine with the bubble and you're invincible forever. Even without it the enemies don't do enough damage to kill you if you just run past, plus I had more healing items than I'd ever need.

well I finally got an opportunity to play through 1/2 Genie and OH BOY what a utter let down. Hands down the worst of all Shantae games aside form the artwork. Short and easy as fuck. What the fuck happened? Why does it seem like they released an unfinished demo build?

The idea of Kickstarter was to bypass publishers getting Jewish with the purse strings and not backing games without either heavy concessions to mass market appeal or simply having no interest in making certain games at all. But doing so also circumvents the largest motivating factor which keeps a game's development focused, on track, and on budget. In fact, it make the problem even worse - because it invites "backer involvement" in the development process - hence why you have so many useless transformations, one-off cameos, and half-realized features. The entire scope of the game's design shifted during the planning stages to accommodate new stretch goals and backer contributions.

Until Kikestarter can introduce some level of hard accountability and put the reigns on developers like a proper publisher would - this problem isn't going to go away.

I keep hoping that the next Shantae game is going to be the one that'll be as fun as the original, and I keep being disappointed.

This latest one is really a huge letdown after all this time and all the money they got. Like why … why is it stage-based… why is the dancing just "hold a button and press a direction" (instead of the old directional-inputs-to-transform dancing)… why are so many of the forms so godawful situational crap… even the voice acting is sparse and sporadic and the story feels so weak, like they were just throwing characters and elements in as fanservice to longterm fans but without any real link to the story it's just really transparent and not fun at all.

I did not back the game, but when I saw the "demo" I was hyped. I loved the original game and Pirates curse was good. I forgave Risky revenge for being unfinished because I played like $5 bucks for it. But I was expecting a finished game with 1/2 Gene hero at $20. I mean all they did was resking the Ducktales game an called it a day. A Computer/Gigantic Bird to take you to each level 5 levels with a boss fight at the end. Ducktales is $5. Seriously I wouldn't be this annoyed if they didn't have the potential to make something great. They clearly have some talent but they constantly fail to deliver.

Metriod style games is one of my favorite genres. But even if they where going the Megaman rough they failed because they have those stupid fetch quest and its only 5 levels when Megaman is typically 9 levels and 10 bosses. 6 Robot masters, 3 Wily levels and a final boss. One of the reason's I've defended Shatea games over the years was because there fundamentals where sound and I assumed if given the budget they would make a solid full game. I guess they are really just a one hit wonder with nice pixel art after all.

More content is on it's way, for free. You could either have gotten the game with all DLC in 2018 or some shit, or get this now and get more content as time goes on. I'm personally pretty happy I didn't have to wait longer.

Pirate's Curse has a physical 3DS copy and a PS4 one, the latter a very limited run. Risky's Revenge: DC even got a super-tiny print run on physical for PS4
