You've got your typical bug aliens but without the central queen they all just sort of…stop, and they have to evolve their own individual intelligence to fill the gap until someone is strong enough to unite them under common leadership. You could even have the different castes of hive creatures, warriors, drones, workers, etc, have their own communities and personalities and have them all answer, albeit differently, to the same queen.

Bayformers tried to make the transformations "realistic", which meant lots of tiny parts and plates moving around. The ones with bright, solid color schemes mitigated it somewhat, but the likes of Megatron and most of the decepticons were awful.
