So no, there won't be ads in games the way there are in f2p mobile titles. Product placement maybe, but no game-pausing ads.

Last time I checked some TF2 and CS servers had ads placed by the owners. Some of them would make servers with disguised bots, so that you'd join and think you were playing a legit game. Even if was a legit server those ads were annoying as fuck, and didn't account for weird aspect ratios or resolutions.
As for ads added by the actual devs, maybe. I remember Killing Floor's server login screen had ads for Tripwire's other games, or DLC packs. I don't think I've seen any more intrusive advertising yet.
