It's vastly superior. One, it takes place in actual Ivalice and follows the lore (but not the tone) of 12 and Tactics. It adds a bunch of new jobs and races and has a fairly down to earth plot you fight the mafia. It's also fairly open, you're hardly ever railroaded into plot-battle.

I felt the same way when it first came out, but I gave it another shot last year and got just as hooked. If the story bothers you the most, it gets better as time goes on and the side quest content has multiple side stories that make it worthwhile as well.

The only let down in FFTA2 was that you had to take in all the special characters and couldn't turn them down if you wanted to go 100%

The only let down of FFTA1&2 is that they're not the original FFT on consoles. The differences is like night and day. Granted, as is I thought FFTA1&2 were pretty fucking complex for handheld games. So I doubt a 1:1 copy of FFT for handhelds which are supposed to be on the go pick up and play affairs, would be a good idea.

But yeah, I'm surprised at how much the charge system changes the dynamics of combat. Granted I expected the jobs and weapons mastering to be much more deep since it's a console game. But I was just shocked at how much things can change due to the combat not being as immediate. Things such as stance, morale, casting times etc. go a long way despite being small details.

I will give credit where it's due though, FFTA has no random encounters bullshit, and the monster taming mechanics were fun.

Most 'em are directly riffing from FF6's thief off the top of my head. I remember Zidane took heavy notes but he had being a heavy flirt added in, to the point he's the only FF protag that's played grabass on-screen and he's programmed to look at the most conventionally-attractive female model in the room when not speaking to anybody, so that sets him apart.

The most annoying parts in FFTA were the constant "Help X town" after freeing it for the 100th time
Constantly getting judge points even when you got 10 was something you could've easily avoided, just like the fucking judge getting a turn to move his fat ass

FFTTA2 casualized the phoenix downs and revives where you didn't have to hit the tile with the corpse anymore, but that was okay.
I was hoping for more Gaol action, the moon towers were hard but pretty unrewarding if I'm honest.

Judging a game solely on how hard it is sounds fucking dumb to me if it offers other means of replayability that don't rely on its difficulty.

We can tie the whole series together by having Ajora be a Kiltean priest/spy who the Occuria corrupt via a grimoire for one last stab at "reigning history." I remember more about scenes where Balthier and/or Fran said next to nothing and were just there rather than anything the other characters have ever done, even during action heavy scenes or battles. They blend into the fucking background to me.
If a character does that, I do not only not care about them, I don't want to have to play as them or have them in my party.
Again, as fun as the game may have been, it absolutely failed on that and it affects the rest of the game's components.

I prefer to learn all Parivir or Fighter, mainly for far fist and backdraft abilities and then go full Paladin with Sequencer, two Sequencers if you use a cheat module :^), Excalibur2/Fallen Angel, Peytral and an angel ring + ninja tabi
Both Sequencer and Peytral keep improving their stats over time
I remember Sequencer's max being 131, bretty gud

It can only be the zodiac ore because any other item you could get again with a mission, but the ore you can only get x times, and need it for exactly x quests

I found it refreshing, just like some other changes from FFTA, like your MP starting at 0 instead of being full first and then depleting with use.
The deaths were casualized so you could revive them anywhere unless you broke the law that is and the fucking judge wouldn't take a turn and you wouldn't have to wait for him to dish you out JP for every kill, though I miss Judge points and combos.

A nice combo as well, but I never saw a purpose for Ninja other than dual wield and the speed/evasion advantage

I like the FFTA law system because it affects not only you but the enemy as well. FFTA2's law system is designed just to add artificial difficulty (Can't use Fire..on enemies who are weak to fire)..and some of the laws are just BS (No Missing? Expect you to miss…on TURN 1!)

Unrelated to the law system, not a fan of splitting the White Magic to White and Green, making the White Mage to be nothing but a healbot and not a healbot and buffer and honestly, not a fan of starting out with MP 0.

Green mage was of absolutely no value to me, I was hoping for something more valuable of a job addition for the Viera.
Spellblade on the other hand was pretty ballin.

I kinda liked that you start out with 0MP so both you and your foes start at 0 and work up from there. That's where I would use the Privilege for upholding the law that gives you 20MP back each turn instead of 10.
The one single reason I hated that you started with full MP in FFTA1 was the ability to turn damage into mp damage, so as long as you had at least 1mp you'd take any damage unscathed.
But I think the ability was nerfed in 2.

I didn't really like Adelle's sidequest because most of the Inheritor's abilities are average, bad or just plain unreliable when you can just be a Paladin dual wielding knightswords using Magick Frenzy to brutalize everyone in your path. And the game actually teaches you that chep trick with the Five Colors' Blue Mage pretty early on.
The main quest if pretty meh however and I didn't like the way it locks you with 5 characters in your rooster throughout the end. I wasn't particularly fond of Cid or Gurdy.
