If you mean the PS3/360/PC game, it's because they didn't have the history of Mercenaries mode behind them.

In RE2, he was the only survivor of the group sent in to reclaim some research/vials from Birkin, and this was after the guy turned into zombie hulk. In RE4, he was only in Mercenaries, but he was the character with the best finisher and required the most skill to use. He had one weapon and no melee, but his finisher was a neck snap, which was far faster and efficient than any of the other characters'.

Also, his involvement in the story is almost entirely unstated. Especially after Umbrella disappeared, considering they were his employer.

I think RE7 will be good either way though. It looks like they're actually interested in doing something new and different with the IP rather than just "This time, it's bigger! And there's more action! And this old character you haven't thought about in nearly a decade is back! And we made THREE CAMPAIGNS!"

With RE5/6 they deviated from the original games so much that fans of the original games started to feel disinterested. This was fine, initially, because RE4 got them a whole new audience and that audience wanted a game more like RE4 than the original trilogy. They still managed to put enough horror and tension in RE5 to get some praise for it, and the game was pretty fun overall, but it wasn't what many people wanted RE to become.

With RE6, we see the logical conclusion of the path that RE4 started us on. More action, more combat focus, and almost entirely ditching the ammo scarcity and inventory strategy. The plot was a mess, there were far too many QTEs, and it didn't even stand up as a competent action game anymore.

While RE7 seems to be an even bigger shift away from the original game mechanics of the series, it's such a big shift that it can get away with it. If it was a third person game with more of a focus on action then it'd get endlessly compared to the REmake and CV. But as a first person game with some of the core elements from the original (puzzles are a focus, resources seem limited, and your character isn't a one man army), the game is shaping up to be more faithful to the spirit of the franchise than any of the other mainline entries have been for quite some time.

It is worth noting that Mercenaries really got its start as the Battle Game in the original Resident Evil. So having a mode similar to either mini-game will be a fair thing to do, in my opinion.

That said, we also know what a faithful third person continuation would look like. Revelations and Revelations 2 blended elements from the older games and RE4 so well that it's mind boggling to see that they've made it into a side series.

TLDR: RE7 has what makes the series good from everything I can see.

Butterlord and Styx 2 are the only upcoming games I'm really looking forward to. There are some 40k games coming out that look decent like Sanctus Reach and Deathwing but I'm not holding my breath. Also I'm keeping my eye on Rising Storm 2. I know I shouldn't be giving Tripwire any more shekels but it's not actually being developed by them so that at least gives me some hope. I signed up for the beta so I should find out for myself what it's like any day now. South Park 2 might be worth a pirate, I was pleasantly surprised with the first one.

And I'm looking forward to the trainwreck that will be the new Ass Effect. I think it might even get EA to finally put Bioware out of its misery if it flops hard enough. Probably not but a man can dream.

Compare those two. Left is darker, less defined and not just in the less polygon sense but there's more shadow at play. There scene is a darker blue overall, compare to the right which is overly lit, and has a green filter on it like Snake's doing this in the Matrix.

Even just by comparison, the original has a much darker, colder atmosphere than TTS, apparent even in this little snap comparison right there.

Tekken 7 is moving towards a really shitty character direction, and good character direction was always one of Tekken's saving graces.
