I'm just barely starting to learn about any of this, and have been against christianity for a long time, but it blew my mind to recently find out about the origins of Judaism. Just because the Romans borrowed much of their mythological understanding from the Greeks doesn't mean they were identical deities. Ares was, as I said, considered a Thracian god in origin, a very old, nomadic, pot-smoking tribe of steppe-barbarians related to the Scythians and Dacians. It is hard to tell if there is any truth to this sentiment, or if the Greeks merely associated Ares with the barbarians because he was seen as having barbaric traits.

I've always thought of the gods as sort of archetypes, like different types of people or something. Like role models I guess, and the stories and myths are like aesop's fables, their point isn't to record history but to demonstrate a lesson or express an idea. At most, I would've thought of the gods as being a sort of metaphor for our distant ancestors if I were to have thought they "existed" at all. I dislike the general idea of the gods not being real entities, I agree that they are archetypes but that does not negate their existence or power. Ares does have tremendous power over the world, even when you view him as just metaphor for the burning rage and martial prowess hidden beneath each man.

But archetypes alone are not worthy of worship. The gods are not just archetypes, they are the ORIGINAL archetypes, the blueprint for the entirety of the cosmos, the carvers of the universe. We just don't have good textual sources, as everything prior to Snorri was largely oral tradition. Wily, sly and a shit, you embody Loki, etc et al. The rest might have been a simple framework for teaching basic morality and life lessons.

We have several detailed descriptions of the Heathen Temples in the Heimskringla and the Sagas, we have descriptions of rites and rituals carried out by the Germanic tribes given to us by the Romans and Christians, we have grimoires like Agrippa's Occult Philosophy that deals with ancient spells and rituals, many of which are folk Germanic rituals, we have the Galdrbrok which details specifically Icelandic magic and ritual, and we have the Merseberg Chants and Bee Poems, which give a rough idea of the formula, intended purpose and process of Germanic ritual and magic.

You're also acting like Snorri is the only source on Norse myth, ignoring the Poetic Edda entirely. Why do you doubt that the Havamal is an original source? It is probably the most sacred and true set of morals ever given in any European religion. You'd be incorrect in that assumption. I was reared so and did do a long stint in a seminary which cured me pretty thoroughly. I find that most everyone, Christian and otherwise, has no scholarship and has no goddamned clue what it is they're actually meant to believe. That's unacceptable to me, so I studied a few of the major ones - including what survives of the Norse and Saxon practices. I'm aware of the archaeology and I actually collect occult books, so I do have a translation of the Galdrabók, et al. They are valuable, no doubt - but those are studies of ritual magic. That isn't religion - similar to the way hoodoo and vodun share pantheons and powers, but are not the same. Hávamál is also valuable as a book of religious ideals and theory, but what did the priests wear? What services were available in Freyr's temple at Uppsala? Did priests live there or did they come in to attend to upkeep and sacrifice only? We know all of that about Egyptian worship - we don't about the Norse….yet.

You also mistake my practicality for defeatism.. I think we desperate need a unifying religion - but it absolutely must be built on a proper foundation. He also loses the ability to swear oaths.
