the m&p series is legit, great choice. the main difference in a "for life" ar would be a nice barrel like an FN that will last tens of thousands of rounds. but realistically by the time you shoot out your barrel to where it starts keyholeing, you will likely have more than one ar in your collection. but any colt, fn, bcm, lwrc, s&w, ruger a&r will be fine really.

I have no idea how much ammo has been through it, but I know it sat in storage for decades before I got it. Mags are as old as the gun, but in fine condition. I even tried replacing the springs inside to see if they were an issue, but there was no change in performance. Everything I've read about Universal carbines suggests mine is functioning as it should, though.
Gas port is probably clogged to hell and back if someone used it long before you. Probably needs some CLP and rangetime after the aforementioned port issue.

A Garand is still pretty viable for defensive use,hunting enblocs are cheap, 8 rounds that isn't too slow to reload, still legal in shitholes like california. Won't every be going down in price either, so it's a relatively cheap battle rifle speaking (sans real cheap ar10's) that has historical value, is interesting, useable and will appreciate in value.
I plan on getting the CMP shit done so I can pick up a few, be more interesting than another AR.
M1 Carbines are the real overprices bits $1000+ for USGI and ammo isn't as common as .30-06 if things went south. Shame too since I felt one up at a gunshow and loved it because they are featherweights.

The best thing about firearms is that they're basically the last category of consumer good where everything hasn't been nickel and dimed until it's barely functional and destined to be scrap in 10 years. Literally every gun on sale right now (except most Freedom Group products and knock-off brand shotguns) will last multiple lifetimes for the average shooter as long as it is cleaned and oiled properly. Even poverty-tier guns like Hi-Point C9s and Carbines are built like tanks.

Brass bullets don't have a problem with deformation with super sanic velocities. Originally they were made for big game but it turns out that velocity kills armor like a hot knife to a brick of butter.
Yeah, for hunting .30-06 is still up there for big game because of the heavier loads, might be a bit overkill for dear since plenty of deer have been killed by .30-30's. But for most stuff outside of that .308 does as good a job for most.

It's not just for an investment monetarily, but they are still plenty good for actual use and you can get into them pretty cheap for what it is.
It's not an ideal, but if you want something with historical interest, not half bad fire power, not too unreasonable entry price and they'll appreciate.

If you're on poverty tier budget you could grab an SKS for as low as $300 depending on its condition and your luck. Even milsurp bolt actions are getting about that expensive these days so might as well add something semi-auto to your collection.

Israel made one sniper rifle that likes to explode when you shoot it, and the Tavor, as we all know, is absolute trash that barely works and likes to gas you when you use it. And that's saying something. When your bullpup stands out because of the gas it shoots in your face, when every other bullpup also gasses you, it's a problem.
I've thought about it, but I don't live in an urban area where a semi-auto would be more necessary. I'd rather get really proficient with the one rifle I do have than spread money, time, and resources out without reason. If anything should happen that creates a scenario where arms are needed, I would see myself using my rifle much more frequently to hunt than defend myself and right now I'm comfortable enough with it to do both. Maybe down the road if I move somewhere else or get a higher paying job it'd be nice to modernize, but if a bolt action mauser was good enough for my grandfather against the russians then it should be good enough for me in a race war, right?

There are things like Spanish Mausers that are chambered in .308. Trench mags are also a thing (I know there's a modern one for the Mosin, idk about Mausers.).
As long as you aren't clearing buildings, nothing really wrong with a bolt action, as long as you don't suck at aiming. You'll be at a disadvantage, but it can work, especially since you're paying $150-250 vs. $700-1200 plus mags for $15-20 a pop for a modern rifle.
I already said I don't live in a city, and unless they start operating in organized fronts I would only expect to encounter a couple at a time and I would most likely see them before they saw me. Again it'd probably be nice to have both, but right now it makes more financial sense to invest in training than it does to invest in a new rifle, new ammo, new reloading dies and powers, new bullets/finding the best weight and powder charge for the gun, etc

An old .30-30 lever action for like $250 used that's a decent compromise between cost and firepower. 7+1, .30-30 is a bit expensive but similar to 7.62x39 but can be loaded with heaver bullets, lever action so a bit faster than a bolt.
Pump 12 gauge is better for poverty guns though.
The SA- 24 is pretty obviously the same bolt design used in the UZI, but calling it a knock off is a stretch. A lot of guns are based off prior technologies. The SA-24 is more a late first/second generation SMG due to tube receiver that is milled, while the UZI is a third gen, modern square receiver, stamped gun better suited for reduced cost and mass production.

All Mausers are for smokeless, even the commission rifles, though many of them were not converted to the new .323 standard and might grenade with full strength 8x57. The only mauser you never ever fire are Chilean ones converted over to .308, they didn't change the barrel, they reamed out the chamber and soldered in a new one.

Fellow Eurofag here. Problem is, I don't know where to train. Nobody in my area has a gun, so my neighbors would (understandably) call the police immediately if they heard even a single gunshot. Without some training I'm not sure I would feel confident if push should come to shove, I don't even know how to aim correctly, how to shoot while I'm moving, etc. I could go through the legal route, acquire a license and train at some gun range but I'm not sure if I want the authorities to know I'm armed.
Practice clearing the inside of your house, even if it's just with a broomhandle. Pretend to kill your stove/microwave/lamps/ etc. /k/ can help you out with instructional videos. There's a lot you can do to introduce the muscle memory.
Get an air rifle, some targets, and a pellet trap. Nearly silent, cheap to use, allows you to practice fundamentals, and some air guns may be used to take small game. Failing that, get a bow and arrows and join an archery club. You might also consider seeking training at a range in a more gun friendly country such as the Czech Republic or Finland without knowing which country you're in, I don't know how viable that would be
check your laws, some countries limit caliber or kinetic energy of airguns. if you can't get an air rifle, you may be able to get an airsoft gun, but that should be your last resort

It's no really worth going into, they aren't really as different as people try and make them out to be. An AK isn't a 10 moa gun or completely unstopable, a AR isn't a jamomatic or a laser beam.
AK's are cheaper in mass production, AR's are more modular. AK is limited to 300 yards practically since 7.62x39 arcs like a rainbow. AK can handle serious neglect better than an AR and is more durable technically due to larger bolt lugs, but will anyone ever actually break either from reasonable use? Not really.
The US AK market is absolutely shit since china and russia got banned from import, and then all of the AWB and 922r makes a lot of people not even consider shipping them over, and if they do it increases costs.
