I was joking when I said 1993. The reason lots of gamer that have been into vidya since the early 2000's or before that feel like the video game industry is at a fall is because the demographics have wildly switched to appeal to a greater audience.
The idea of games these days is centered around fun for the average person, not for the person who is into video games. take GTA 5. Compared to the previous titles the campaign was easy as shit, and besides landing helicopters on blimps there is nothing to do in single player after the story is over besides quitting and joining multiplayer. But the idea of GTA V is that it's incredibly easy, and you can do a bunch of ridiculous shit with little trouble at all, thus making it more fun than the previous titles due to the fact that the story was harder in the older games, and you could do less wacky shit. They started the process of appealing to normalfags with GTA 4.

There's more of a divide between AAA big budget behemoths and lower budget "indie" games then there used to be, and the AAA games are less innovative and more derivative, but that's about it.
In terms of actual average quality games are much, much better now.
