Art trades and gifts will get exposure, and also every picture has to be unapologetically lewd. SOTC is basically a Zelda game stripped down to its bare essentials, and given the amount of bloat exhibited by Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword in particular, a more minimalist game is a welcome change of pace.

The sword shows you where to go, not how to get there. It's also dependent on direct sunlight (unless you got the sword which penetrates clouds) which means it's useless for good portions of the game.

It's a waypoint marker and and is as much of a crutch as any other waypoint marker, especially since the path to all but maybe two or three colossi is a straight shot.
