Personally, I never believed "everybody was born equal as a blank slate", that would have been just too contradictory to the evidence in front of my face. It's obvious that even people born into the same family and raised under the same conditions can have wildly different capabilities, this was very evident in my own family, where my IQ greatly exceeded my sister and mother.

It was also fairly obvious to me growing up that capabilities are largely passed on genetically. One only had to observe certain kids I knew at school, where high achieving parents had clearly produced multiple high IQ children. This was born out in my own case, when I re-established contact with my estranged father and discovered that his side of my family was full of scientists and engineers.

I would say that my view back then was "Everybody deserves a fair shot to reach their potential", and in my naivety I believed that some people were being unfairly denied that chance. I think this used to be a fairly widespread view on the "old" left. This is where they shot themselves in the foot with all the idpol and intersectionality bullshit. When they started pushing to treat people differently based on race, gender, etc, and promoting cancerous ideas like "white privilege", they totally betrayed the key principle underlying my support. I'm sure many others felt the same.

Wondering why they were pushing this shit led me to look further into the matter. I soon reached the inevitable conclusion that the aforementioned genetic inheritance can be generalized to races, and that racial under-performance was largely self-inflicted by behavior. It's obvious, in retrospect - when the penny drops, it's like acknowledging a truth that you knew deep-down all along. The cognitive dissonance of your previous position evaporates, and things become so much clearer. There is no going back.
