The one on one fights excel with the system, but it falls to fucking bits when you're up against a crowd because they can shut you down super easily with mid-cost cards. Oh, and if you combo some early low cost cards and have learned certain skills, guess what, you get to gimp yourself instead of simply overcome Card Break.

FUCK THIS SYSTEM GODDAMN. At least make it so only the enemy you're targeting can card break you, fuck.

To be honest, it was better than I had expected.
The DARKNESS DARKNESS HEARTLESS KEYBLADE KEYBLADE bullshit isn't really much in the game other than as an excuse for you to go to these various Disney worlds.
That's what the game really is, a sort of tour through the Disney worlds with a flimsy anime excuse of some rather nebulous evil.

The storyline of the fucking thing is pretty much a search and rescue mission from Sora's point of view and the ending is bitter-sweet yet still uplifting.
It is a good game.

It really isn't until the games that come after it that shit gets REALLY off the rails. I mean hooolllyyyyyy fuck it goes full on retarded japanese anime to the point where sometimes I wonder if it wasn't all meant as a parody of the ridiculous bullshit that happens in anime.

If you play KH2FM on Critical mode, you'll experience one of the most difficult, but carefully and smartly balanced games ever created.
The entire game is built so that your damage will be bumped up at specific moments in the game, and there's always something in place that allows you to advance with no grinding, while at the same time kicking your ass.

In fact, it's so balanced that people do level 1 runs of the entire game, and it's viable.
90% of everyone that played these games will never experience it.
The devs spent an insane amount of time balancing Critical Mode in FM, from what skills they give you, to AP gain balance, to how much the enemies hit, there's all these little tweaks in place.
Completely wasted on a core audience that sees KH and just thinks "what is this gay disney shit".
3/4 of the people playing KH2 will just play the normal version that has basically zero content and is piss easy, and then never touch FM.
Almost all of Holla Forums will just play the first game despite it being the clunkiest, most boring piece of shit ever made, and even if the play the FM version of it, it has a slapped on Proud mode that the game isn't even remotely balanced around.

So much work and careful finetuning, completely wasted.

Also friendly reminder that the only way to play it on 60 fps is through emulator, as apparently PS3 is so shit it can't even run PS2 game on 60. PS4 version will supposedly be 60 fps, but we yet to see that.

This is the only legit criticism so far. Only starting with BBS they included Critical Mode from get go, rather than with some updated re-release. Hopefully KH3 will have it from the beginning too.

In most japanese games, especially japanese console games, functions are tied to the framerate.
It blows my mind that people, especially on Holla Forums, still don't know this.
They cap the framerate because when you uncap it, shit starts getting really buggy and certain functions aren't timed propely anymore, not to mention you will get different results every time you enter a room and different timings on attacks and such, this is why speedruns are always done on PS2 for KH.
This also means that the PS4 version might end up being worse if they don't propely take care of the framerate locked functions and script within the game.

I just recently emulated an English patched version for the PS2. If you overlevel like hell, you can mash X through all but the hardest boss fights(and the Pirates of the Caribbean grim reaper heartless). Even at max level with best possible equipment, there's no way you're fighting the data battles without some gitgud. This is of course, on critical, because there's no reason to play on anything else.

It was pretty damn fun.

It's an action game and the game offers you tools (None of which are tied to your level) and you can use them to beat the games challenges, that's what's expected of an action game, it's not bad design you can do it but it's not good design that they didn't make a boss have some unavoidable attack.

Only difference is you're doing less damage now dragging out the experience because you turned on that handicap skill at the beginning of the game (Handicapping yourself isn't balance like the other user was sucking the games dick over)

A self imposed challenge is fun and all but it's not a merit to the game, it offering the tools to dodge all damage with it's mechanics is an expected design then in KH2's it gets cute and offers mechanics that are avoid damage + damage them + make you invincible and you wonder why after a second version and a remaster they didn't Nerf that shit.

More games need a area just for the purpose of coming back to after major events to just do challenges at.

I always made a deck for enemy encounters and a deck for Bosses.
Enemies would get Blitzed which they can't out play (value 15 and mooks can only play up to 9 and 0 is rare add Jafar I think as an enemy card if they do like playing 0) Then for bosses, just make the strongest slights you can and Jafar I think them for safety, only like the last 5 or so bosses survive before your Ars Arcanum or what ever your strong slight of choice is.

I enjoy KH1 for it's simplicity. It's a dumb and fun concept that you can't take seriously. KH1 shines in that it's much more balanced between edgy JRPG and dumb silly Disney influence. The plot served it's function as being a reason to go on a wacky Disney space adventure and did not get bogged down in it's own shit (much).
It's corny and cringy to the point of pain, but it's fun.
