I figure there's probably more to the story than what's in the article but

AKA why co-ops can't co-exist with businesses. The more unethical businesses out-compete them, surely.

Oh please.

I should have guessed that as soon as this showed up on the feeds that someone would rush here to try and rub it in.

From the "article" it's hard to glean any actual information and the reddit thread on it is just full of "how dare these people want to be paid a living wage" and "fuckin' commie mass murderers" etc

Well there's your problem.

What did they mean by this?

Then dont go there, dumbass.

REEEEEEEE

Jesus fuck. Do these people not understand that if you want market socialism, businesses run by incompetent idiots are also going to fail, just like they do now?

Sage because the article is shitty bourgeois propaganda of

It means they don't know what "is a bug, not a feature," means.

Is "Heatstreet" aware that the Garden Diner and Cafe was far from the first or only worker cooperative?

Not only that, traditional authoritarian businesses shut down all the time (of all new businesses, half shut down within the first six months and almost all the rest within the first two years) and there are literally whole TV shows dedicated to shitty capitalist restaurants, of which wait times is a very common problem.

Just going to skim right over that, huh?

Also, vegan food everywhere is always expensive.
It's something spoiled rich people do to show off.

Yeah, vegan restaurants are a scam. Plants are less expensive than meat.

shh shh no dude shut up marxism failed nothing to see here capitalism's the best lol don't worry kid you'll learn how the real world works when you get out of college :^) heheh eh mister marks??

Restaurants are perhaps the most voliatile small business and they fail all the time. The spotlight on this is similar to how Venezuela failing to the dutch disease and becoming poor like the other south american states is only an issue because muh reds, otherwise it'd be the market working as intended.

Fucking hell the english really hated our guts.

It's an economic term m8.

That pic pains me in the gut.
God do i hate the world a bit more now.

...

But you know what? Those workers have nobody to blame here but themselves. A Co-Op isn't always going to work out, for the same reasons that any business may or may not work out. Most restaurants do, in fact, fail. In the end, I'd always rather see the attempt made, than to just stick with the exploitation, and pretend like it's somehow okay, because the business sticks around for a little while longer. The bad choices here were choices that the workers themselves made, and that really should mean something.

I'm more willing to believe the owner is at fault. This sounds alot like the sort of porky half-measure that this sort of thing results from.

Even if it's "self managed," if your "co-op" is run by a bunch of apathetic teenagers that don't care about someone' else's business succeeding, you're going to get results like this.

B-but

True, if this hack of a writer could pull her head out of her ass for 5 seconds and actually go into the reasons why the place failed, beyond "LOL KAMEEZ SO DUM", there might be an actual discussion to be had. But of course, journalism is lame, and making fun of people for trying anything at all is the new big thing. I'm surprised she didn't go all the way and start calling them autistic.

That said, charging out the ass for spiced bean-curds and slapping pictures of fucking Mao everywhere probably did not help their bottom line The best and most successful co-ops that I've seen are the quiet co-ops, that only tell you if you ask, or mention it in passing. Nobody minds worker's self-management, and a lot of people love it, in theory, but they'd rather see you venerating people like Cesar Chaves, over Che Guevara, and Emma Wong, over Mao Zedong.

What's your opinion on the success of the co-ops in Argentina? Many of the government benefits they are provided are the same provided to traditional, hierarchical enterprise.

While I have nothing against veganism (I am even seeing a vegan), it does attract a… certain type. They're often the sorts of people that I assume would struggle running a successful enterprise. I'm not sure you can entirely treat this as an example of co-ops failing, since the personnel is a confounding variable.

The azn is cuter than those white whores tbh

Go back to the Soviet Union pre-gorbachev.
Find a way to solve the stagnation.
Congrats you just developed another theory to advance Socialism.
Now put it thru the paces, rigorous stress tests.
If it passes you advanced Socialism by another step.

I admittedly know very little about it… but if they are the same benefits, in fairness that is more than they get in large parts of the West.

Vegans will be vegans…

Small businesses go out of business all the time. Just because one co-op is ran poorly doesn't mean it's universal. If they can't manage to even get food out quickly then of course they'd fail.

I'm confused as to why a co-op has an owner?

Gee

It wasn't a co-op. It was a "democratically run" business with an owner.

In other words, you can't have capitalism without exploitation. Makes perfect sense.
