DOOM

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter

Undertale

LISA: The Painful RPG

Being an rpg maker game crippled it hard.

I hate Fallout 4 but I would rather play that than Stalker. Stalker is trash.

They're both shit games for effeminate manlets.

It's a good game, but I think OFF would be a better example specificly for Undertale, because it did the whole "killing everyone" theme way better.

I think all three of them are good.

Well, I shoulda specified games on steam, rather than games in general.

Get out of here Stalker.

I'm an effeminate manlet and I don't like either of them. except the music

I agree, I just can't enjoy it

Stalker is actually pretty popular. You could say maybe it wasn't so after it was released in 06 but it built up a good following.

starcraft
metal fatigue

This. Only retarded slavaboos like that garbage.

sure, but it doesnt have the name recognition of fallout

Civ VI
Endless Legend

wrong

You should read your own data.
Fallout 4 is more popular by pure numbers, but remember that giant ad campaign around it, plus it's still getting DLC packs. It is also losing large portions of players every month.

Now STALKER is, by definition, an indie game, that didn't have much marketing behind it and was purely word of mouth. It's been up 43% this month, and is steadily rising, which is not the norm for older games.

By pure numbers, it's blown out, but by longevity, STALKER will probably last longer than FO4.

Sort of a mixed bag there. OFF was less obvious about the whole "are you sure you're doing the right thing?" shit and Undertale's genocide route did feel like an afterthought. But at the same time having two routes really helps create some contrast and stops the paradox of trying to make the player feel bad for doing something the game requires them to do to progress.

In any case, OFF also had some really awful gameplay.

An obvious one, though Tactics Ogre has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years.

What mod is that?

...

You're comparing a game that was released retail before it got picked up by steam to a game that was released only on steam.

Tactics ogre, the psp version at least, has the most fucking retarded leveling up mechanic I have ever seen.
I love the game, but being forced to complete random encounters over and over and hoping that one of the mobs will drop a card that gives +1 in a random ability to one of my characters is just too grindy to be enjoyable.

It's a real pity they went for that. For the first few hours I was actually having more fun than with Ffta.

Really? Are you talking the psx or the psp version? Either way I'm not so sure about that.

Undermeme

Live-A-Live

The guest AI being retarded and enemies scaling to just above your party's average level is what killed it for me.

I haven't played the PSP version, but I thought both the SFC and PS1 iterations were superior to FFT. The gameplay had more depth to it(strategically at least) and the story was quite a bit more nuanced.

Stop it please

So it's not really superior as a game then but as a book?

They both suck. There's no direction in any of those games: all you do is kill kill kill and occasionally collect keys.

Dingaling freaked out on Twitter when Trump won. It's a bad game now. You fucking square.

Never heard of it. It's probably shit.

Same game, different IP's.

This thread is gay as shit.

your mom

my hand

Can we also use this a thread to do the reverse, post a popular game to find a lesser known equivalent?

Popular game:
Oblivion/Skyrim

Lesser known superior:
Risen

have nothing in common

Should have said daggerfall.

Not exactly lesser known, though. It's even part of the same series.

Have you ever seen a normalfag play daggerfall?

LOL

projection

Worms vs it's predecessor and GOAT Scorched Earth

Both made by SJW's. They're more similar than you think.

LISA and memeshit are both (((games))) made by lazy fucks for max shekels.
At least LISA had decent artwork and had a contextual reason for all the faggot shit, undermeme was just

You either my nigga or my brother.

No

Heh

Fuck that other guy, let's do this fucking properly.
Let's talk about fucking Iji, because there's seriously not enough porn of it. I've got both trailers for each game, if you haven't seen them already or recently, do it now, it'll help later on. Other than the increase in production quality that being made later provided, both games mostly show the same thing in their trailers, gameplay and cutscenes. But again, mostly. Where Undertale has its "quirky" moment of 3D cg, Iji plays its hand much more subtly, by having several game mechanics that are unintuitive being shown, like hacking enemies weapons and being boosted by rockets to reach areas. I won't go into the mechanics or story of Undertale, because I'm sure most of you either already know or don't care. Except for argumentatively the music, locales, and the temporal bullshit, Iji does every thing that people praised Undertale for, better and earlier. Rather than separating combat and exploration into two different styles of graphics and gameplay, Iji uses only a basic platforming and shooting system, and the graphics are unified as such, using stylized polygons for characters, and backgrounds are either using blending colors with the wall for non interactive objects and solid colors for those you can interact with. While all the art is still noticeably using pixels, they are used in a different style more akin to Another World than what you would normally think of as a retro game. Now let's move on to the story.

While both games use a form of "human in an alien land," Undertale uses this really just as window dressing for its moral about "no one has to die," that you are the only one that can bring this otherworldly concept of death to this place, excluding old age from that book in snowdin. Iji is about "shit's fucked, like super hard guys, no you can't make everything better," and you're not traversing a place where people are living, but military occupied zones by fucking aliens that speak alien and will usually start shooting you on sight using alien. Guns. In Undertale, you are the one who pacifies the monsters, over and over again, and your reputation never gets the monsters to call a ceasefire, because fuck programming more than the bare minimum that's outside of the retro style Toby was going for. In Iji, if you don't kill people, your enemies realize it and will actually call a truce that has in game repercussions, and will change the nature of certain boss fights, even skipping the first. Even more so, the main character's voice clips when killing enemies change depending on how many you kill, growing more angry the further you descend into Dubai violence. And the weapons aren't some timed button affair, if you put points into "shoot guns," you get to shoot big fucking guns, I'm talking wave cannons and bananas here. I won't go into much detail on the music, but Iji's soundtrack is unified and on point for its theme, grungy guitars and all.

Let's talk about secrets. Other than random events decided by a FUN variable and META GAME BULLSHIT, Undertale's secrets are one note affairs, noting you did this, or that, having Sans mention not taking off the bandage, or some other single line for another challenge, even the closed door outside snowdin is just a tease for a possible boss fight and some self deprecatory humor. Iji has several embedded secrets, starting off with using the Konami code on the main screen, sequential ribbons and posters to collect in stages, repeated rocket jumping leading to a secret cache of weapons, and a whole bonus area based on the creator's previous works ending off in a secret weapon that purposefully glitches the game and requires you to know an obscure code and that it gives you invulnerability frames when entered, and dooms you to an unwinnable version of the first stage if you beat the game with it, not to mention having to use a bonus feature from finding and defeating a difficult optional enemy and repeatedly talking to an npc at the end of the game to unlock the hardest difficulty, reallyjoel's dad.

That's how you make a post, fuckwit.

and if any of you chucklefucks bring up Gaster you might as well hang yourselves now

iji isnt /genesis/core tho so kill yourself faggot

What even the fuck was Gaster? He seems to just be some Uboa knockoff only Game Theory-obsessed kids care about.

An unfinished game element that wasn't completely removed from the code, so some assets like some sprites and a short musical track were left in, that was originally impossible to access unless you datamined the code or hacked the game. A lot of fans thought it was some secret Easter Egg, and ascribed a lot of meaning to it when there was none, such as trying to explain Undertale's myriad of plot holes. Seeing the popularity, Toby patched the game so some of those assets will show up (though very rarely) on normal, no-hacked playthroughs, but he didn't expand on it so it's still basically nothing.

Basically, imagine that art curators suddenly discovered some smudges of paint at the edge of the Mona Lisa, and all the art critics started believing that it has some grand and significant artistic meaning, when in reality it was just the place where daVinci wiped some paint off of his sleeve, and didn't properly clean it up.

Doom is overrated but there's nothing more autistic than Serious Sam.

STALKER is literally empty building simulator with bullet spongey unresponsive enemies and even more boring walking simulator.

All enemies in STALKER literally go down with a single rifle caliber round to the head, stop trying to play it like its fucking HALO you and git gud.

Not true.

t. stalker modder

The main problem is they don't respond to being shot anywhere else except for some random occasions and shrug off bullets like fucking terminator. Ever played Goldeneye? That's how you make enemies that are responsive to damage.

Too lazy to get pcitures

Sword Art Online

.hack

Are you the user that created that created that thread a couple of months ago arguing that the most important thing in shooters is damage feedback?

Yeah, they just shake their head and walk away. You need at least a couple to kill higher level enemies.

Yes, then what? You want me to put on a tripcode?

No, it's just funny recognizing you here. We had a pretty good talk, and since then I've been trying to find shooters that offer both a realistic damage profile and good damage feedback and haven't found any.

F.E.A.R.?

Missing the realistic damage profile, since enemies are all pretty bullet spongy and take multiple headshots to down, which I guess is balanced with the whole slow-mo thing, but it still feels bad IMO.

Well, okay. Soldier of Fortune series has the nicest feedback among all FPS games. MoH and CoD games have nice damage feedback as well that may not be realistic but tells you that you scored a shot.

They shrug off bullets like in CS.

I found a let's play of it once with a guy who liked pewdiepie.

Final Fantasy

SMT mainline

na fear is awesome. i hate this thing about every game has to have low health or its bad. get the heck out of here

Not a single Civ game holes a candle to Alpha Centauri

You are a retard

damn i loved using funky bombs in scorched earth

Iji is so fucking awesome. Great game. So glad I stumbled across it.

Holla Forums everyone

Casualvania IV

Castlevania Bloodlines

Trouble in Terrorist Town

The Ship

Battlefield 1

Verdun

I've honestly been recommending Verdun to all of my friends who were excited about the WW1 aspect of Battlefield 1

As a Russian I have to say that while it's better than Fallout 4, it's not that great.

Atmosphere? Great. Lore? Great.

Gameplay? EHHHHH

Exploration is good, though, as well as crawling around in anomalies. Everything else is very, very iffy.

just lurk moar faggot

Goldeneye

Perfect Dark

Deus Ex

Alpha Protocol

And thank goodness for that. I dont want STALKER being pozzed as fuck

...

It's a bit of a lightweight if you hold it up to the prior Gothic games. Whatever, I'm just here to witness the salt.

Every time I play AP I still don't know what the fuck I'm playing. There's so many different endings and different characters, plus you can unintentionally piss people off or make them like you without meeting them until missions later.

Have you tried Scorched3D? I used to play the hell out of it when I was tired of everything else. It had some pretty entertaining mods now that I recall.

Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect

Aarklash Legacy
Advent Rising.

If we're talking purely gameplay

Minecraft.
A lazy idiot stumbled upon an obscure concept and made a very basic tech demo around it. The concept however really resonated with people, and when he realized this he knew that he could sell this to people as it is without ever improving anything significant. What do you mean my game has developer art in the final release? It's just my unique artstyle! What do you mean the gameplay is shallow and barebones? You're just uncreative!

Terraria

Though by no means obscure, this game takes the same idea but actually builds a solid and complete game around it. The amount of content and variety blows Minecraft out of the water, as well as the detail and work that went into it

I like to compare these two because they're a perfect example of games as products vs games as art and it shows a clear difference in the attitudes of the developers of each respective game. Notch used Minecraft as a cashcow to its full extent, doing only the minimal amount of work required to keep the "game" popular. He was cynical enough to sell a dumbed down virtual lego set to autistic children and make a fortune doing it, and clearly has no love for the craft of making videogames. Redigit on the other hand has kept pumping Terraria with free, gigantic content updates and entirely new game mechanics since its inception, and the game is almost constantly on sale, making it dirt-cheap. He even said he'd stop personally working on the game only to come back and do another update before finally moving on to other projects. I think the passion and sincerity that went into Terraria's development is evident in the game itself. They weren't trying to make money, they were trying to make a good game.

Fuck, I still remember when Terraria was first announced. Everyone though of it as a cheap clone of Minecraft. Funny how things turned out in the end.

I'd say that Terraria grew into something very different thanks to it focusing around fighting things rather than autistically digging holes.
It certainly feels more like a metroidvania with all the health upgrades, clear equipment grading and some resource management which makes it extremely good in comparison. 600+ hours wasted on it in solo good

That's probably the worst part. Terraria to this day has to live with the stigma of being a "Minecraft clone" despite all the effort that went into making it different. It loses out to a shitty autism toy like Minecraft simply because it came out too late.
As a developer I'd be fucking pissed to know that my game I've worked so hard on is going to be forever overshadowed by a lazy business man's cynical cashgrab.

Yo Iji looks awesome, like Another World meets Abuse

I am continually disappointed that the terraforming and unit customization features didn't get added in any subsequent game.

If you don't kill people in Iji, then the aliens start wondering wtf you're doing with all the ammo you're picking up. And to do a full pacifist run, you have to get the biggest gun of them all

DF
rimworld

Why? A UI that's not retarded and wouldn't let you spoon your eyes out.

Was going to post this.

My friend, you put the reee in retard

You frog-worshipers cannot unironically worship all whilst scavenging from other religion

Look out user the dev of the second pic has not approved political views!

They're both pretty shit, Rondo of Blood the best.

Yeah?

Yeah

ITT: Everyone arguing about how hipster they want Stalker to be

When 4chan sends its faggots, they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending oldfags, they’re sending newfags that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing cancer. They’re bring shitposting. They are cancer… And some, I assume, are good goys.

You know this and I know this, but think before you defend religious shitposting

Who's the most retarded, the guy who shitposts, or the guy who takes shitposting seriously?

yeah Verdun is a solid game.

Post the "lesser known alternative".

risen, witcher 1
honestly, Skyrim is barely a game to begin with

dragons dogma. Where skyrim tries to be an rpg but fails and is just a shitty arpg, dogma embraces the arpg

Popular game: Fallout

Lesser-known superior: Exile III

Undertale must be pretty fucking trash indeed to lose to game with controls as horseshit as Iji.

Do like Kurt Cobain and watch that filthy cuck mouth of yours with 12 gauge.

Forgot about this one. Looks cool but is there a singleplayer campaign? How populated are servers?

Ever heard of Christmas?

I'm not even christian and this always makes me mad. Tell me, did the Norse "steal" their gods from the westerward IE peoples when their religions merged? Did Judaism "steal" QBL? Yes on that one actually.

Stay on Holla Forums and stop shitting up Holla Forums and Holla Forums

"Stealing" is easier to say than religious syncretism. The point was about people in glass houses, anyway.

Over a decade later and the entire indie scene is still trying to make Cave Story.

I really like Iji tho

Hell yeah, got it recently, holy fuck it's good.
It's like titan quest except without titan quest problems which makes sense since it's literally same team

...

It would be better without the flying tank and with unstable wind and the overhung ground sliding down by default. And deflectors (the cheapest shields) were simply pointless against the best AI.

It's innacurate, though. If Hajlnar is raised by his norse pre-Christian father and inculcated in their values and customs, but slowly converts to Christianity through cultural diffusion over the course of his and his family's life, bringing with him said customs and values, what was stolen?

...

You couldn't be more wrong and stupid if you tried

get the fuck out.
if you had said gothic or gothic 2 you would have been right. but piraniah bytes havent created a good game since that time and by the looks of it they never will again.
risen had some nostalgia feels if you were into gothic and the exploration was realy well done, but half the game just sucked balls.

last time i checked project zomboid doesnt even have multiplayer. to be fair that was two years ago

also, path of exile.

gothic 1&2, maybe even gothic 3, when compared with skyrim it actualy does quite well.
dragons dogma and witcher series too.

the first half of the first game was alright and then the series went to shit forever.

Servers are a decent amount to still play, and there is no singleplayer, But I thinkt he game is only $10, $15, I cant quite remember.

Oh, course game that is a better built clone of its predecessor made by the same developer would be superior.

Zomboid has had multiplayer for a long time, dummkopf. In fact, I'm pretty sure it had it two years ago.

C-can I use your hand senpai?

The thread was going fine until somebody brought up Holla Forums out of nowhere.

Someone did that here too
I think they're spamming.

Don't mind if I do

You can do better...

Holla Forums creates problems (derailing threads by whining about Holla Forums) and tries to present itself as a solution. I'm sick of going on threads to talk about video games, only for some obvious outsider to derail it because someone posted a triggering reaction image.

The Tekken series
The Virtua Fighter series

What is the more popular analog to Butcher?

Is Butcher a better alternative to DOOM than SS:TSE? Butcher isn't a FPS, though. However platform shooters seem like a very overlooked genre.
