I don't think that "memes", in the chan sense, had much of an impact on the election. Nor did National-Enquirer-tier well-poisoning - that sort of obviously lowbrow propaganda has never really caused any significant political engagement.

This shit election happened because of intentional /non/-engagement - entrenched elites constantly trying to dissuade people from actually making a change on the SocDem front ("Bernie's plans will never work! Bernie can't beat Trump!"), meaning nobody from the left had any enthusiasm for "their" fucking useless candidate when she was inevitably nominated. The entire liberal strategy was negative.

Meanwhile, the right enjoyed constant positive propaganda, because Trump had already staged himself as a candidate who didn't care what the "liberal media" said about him. All news was good news for Trump, since his opponents didn't produce any serious alternative.

The result would have happened even if nobody vociferously supported Trump at all. For the fear-campaign to fail, all you needed was people to vociferously hate Clinton, and they were lining up to do that.

A chickenshit decided to be bullied into submission when the movement he wanted to build needed him, and the ideology of Lesser-Evilism has become incredibly powerful.

This is always a possibility but I doubt it for a lot of reasons. The main one being that I think they would make controlled opposition look a lot more unreasonable and foolish. Ideally the ruling class here wants to keep the overton window myopic and short sighted. They'd rather not have Bernie or further options represented at all and if they do have to acknowledge them they want them to act insane and unkempt like a Trump on the left but worse.

I don't doubt that in general but I doubt Steins current motives about the recount. It seems bizarre to me that she would want to do something that would basically hand Hillary the election after a year of her basically proclaiming she is barley an ass hair away from being Dick Cheney and in some cases worse.

That being said I do think automatic recounts should happen anyway, among a sea of other shit if we are to take democracy seriously at all.

Believe it or not there are a lot of people in Stein's campaign and including Stein herself that have been concerned about election integrity for a long time. I just talked with one of them last night and he's been trying to reform election stuff in various ways for about 20 years now.

Wrong. The candidates allowed to go onto live debates are only there because they have a certain percentage of the vote. Media refused to give any real airtime to candidates other than Clinton, Bernie, and Trump, so those are obviously the only candidates who will get any attention, and therefore they are the only candidates that the public has knowledge of. Mainstream media actively works every election cycle to suppress people they don't like, but because Clinton needs an opponent to run against, they tried to put her up against someone equally as narcissistic as she is in hopes that she would simply be able to roll over him in the polls.

Therein lies the problem. Trump may be a narcissistic asshole, but he's not an idiot. He knows how to play the game. Clinton shot herself in the foot too many times, and the media refused to accept that she could do anything other than be strong and brave and intelligent. With America's trust in media and government weaker than ever before, it's completely unforgivable for the media, the DNC, and other government institutions to not only blatantly overlook improprieties and to intentionally block support for a candidate that is much more popular than their selected candidate, but to outright INSULT anybody who dares disagree with them not to mention lecture them on social issues when most people either disagree with them or just don't give a fuck altogether.

What went wrong? A corrupt institution of combined, integrated power structures actively colluded to undermine democracy, but could not do so enough without getting caught so red-handed that it would trigger a civil war… because yes, they did get caught, but they covered it up enough to keep the public complacent enough to allow a quiet transition of power away from established channels so that they can continue to push their political agenda behind closed doors before the Trump administration takes over.

Did it, though? I've never seen more disillusionment with the entire political system, and particularly with the Democratic Party, from more people than right now.
