from what i can tell, battleborn and OW both have the same SJW shit in them. I don't know much about BB, but I know that prior to OW release all the fucking tumblrtards were soaking their vagoos over how fucking progressive zarya and mei were, and the devs went out of their way to say "thats right look how tolerant we are." So on the surface, it really doesn't seem to me like gearbox did anything more tumblrina-ish than OW did. I think it certainly helped to make sure it was dead on arrival, but i also think the other 2 most important points are 1) they had horrible luck and/or strategy releasing it almost right after OW, so no one was interested, and 2) those horrible fucking twiggy character designs. You can make unique characters but you need to at least have a couple waifu bait chicas to reel in the autists, it seems gearbox attempted to go for "quirky" and it just wound up being fucked.

The hardest part must be the skill tree. If it's nothing but %increases to stats then it's boring. Vice versa and I imagine it would be easy to become over powered.

they're meant as a mechanism by which to have your players feel like they're getting stronger and more powerful over time. There are right and wrong ways to do it. Generally when making a game that involves someone going on an "epic quest" you want them to start out weak and by the end by a powerful force. There are multiple ways to do this, skill trees can be a part of one, usually for a player to look back at the end of the game and see how far they've come. Diablo II and Grim Dawn do this well.

Personally in a game with a high degree of customization and class based combat, then sure, skill trees seem fitting, but I'm seeing them pop up in games in which just feels tacked on with no real reason to be there than just "it's the trendy thing to do" and more often than not it just gets rid of skillful play altogether and is just about upgrading the shit out of yourself so you're invincible.

I'm hoping to keep most generic passives to a shared skill tree among the classes.

Right now, skills are in 4 catagories. Active Skills, Overdrive skills, passives, and unique skills. Actives working similarly to most usable skills in Diablo. Overdrives skills are normally sub par passives until the player activates "Overdrive". While in overdrive, in addition to class specific boosts, the bonuses from Overdrive skill increase and in some cases introduce additional bonuses during it; however, when the timer runs out the buff dissappear and the normal passive from Overdrive cease to function and the player takes penalties based off their class and Overdrive skills until Overdrive become available again. The mechanic is supposed to help reward skilled players by using the short lived boost in power to quickly end an encounter while worse off players will likely get themselves killed. Passives are self explanatory, but I'm hoping to give most, if not all of them capstone bonuses for that aren't just a bigger % increase. Finally, unique skills are just skills that don't fit into any other catagory. Like dual wielding.

As such, said fucktarded suit assholes look at a list of successful games, try to see what kind of game with what mechanics would sell the best in the current environment, and manufacture it. Hence tons of fucking mechanics, that add nothing to a game and are just there to be there, exist in games that don't need them. Skill trees, unlocks, leveling up, achievements and any other kind of horribly artificial "progression" that is not actually progression or useful in any way can be seen in too many modern games.

if your game is going to be skill tree heavy is strongly suggest you take a look at Grim Dawn. Not only is a great game (i suggest you buy it too, i don't think it's very much, maybe 30 bucks) but it is also one of the few recent games that actually does a skill tree very very well. A fansite popped up early on in its development to allow players to plan out builds and still gets heavy use. The trees mix passive and active bonuses and skills depending on which points go where, and allow a ridiculous amount of customization and cross-classing.

Thinking I only like one and not the other. Why would someone not like both?

Can someone legitimately explain the appeal of Overwatch, other than the waifus? Played it now for about 4-5 matches and it's slow as fuck and you only have one weapon per character, not counting the MOBA-trash-esque abilities.

Also it looks like absolute shit, as if it's upscaled low resolution, even if I've set it to my native res.

It's popular for the same reason LoL and DoTA are popular.
