Tell me the best RPG you have played in your ENTIRE LIFE. For me it was Fallout New Vegas + some mods

Unoriginal answer, but Morrowind. I play it modded now (heavily in terms of graphics/sound, not too much in terms of gameplay). I enjoyed Oblivion a lot too, I still do, but I know that's mostly just nostalgia. In terms of just raw story, LISA the Painful is up there as well.

One of the reasons is because the bethesda modding scene is full of drama queens who refuse to allow people to make a compilation mod of many different mods that would ensure that a quick install of multiple compatible mods would be easy. In general they would just piss and complain. One modder this election cycle moved all his mods to private a few days before the election, and refused to put them back even though people complained because he wanted people to go out and vote for hillary. I don't know if he ever moved em back.

I don't play a lot of RPGs, but The World Ends With You really got me with its sense of style, unique mechanics, and relatively short length. Sequel never.

I always wanted to play Ogre Battle 64 but never managed to get my hands on a copy and I hear N64 emulation is still jank as fuck.

FF6 (at least the last part, the first part doesn't count) and Chrono Trigger don't hold your hand and tell you where to go, they've designed the game to nudge you in the right direction, but they don't outright tell you and expect you to explore a little, talking to NPCs to get your own information.

It lets the player figure it out for himself.

Probably the closest thing to a memo would be Obsidian putting out Pillars of Eternity which disappointed a ton of people and Chris Avallone, widely regarded as the only good writer the company had left, leaving over a lot of his writing getting cut. Around the same time or shortly after there was also that expansion for Baldurs Gate which was awful and prompted more whining by and about SJWs in nearly every RPG making company. Faced with so many RPG developers and franchises going to shit, criticism/shitposting about the entire genre went on the rise.

Forgot to also mention the same SJW shit happening with the new Planescape thing and with Divinity OS over the boobplate, Bioware continuing to be Bioware, and Bethesda watering down Fallout and Elder Scrolls even further. So it's not that there was any singular memo, but just a whole lot of bad shit for the genre building up to this point.

What little playing I've done with Project 64 1.6 made the emulator feel stable. Ogre Battle 64 was garbage though. Played through MotBQ quite a few times and loved it but couldn't even finish LC or even get that far because of how bad everything about it was.

Anyways, I'll go with Planescape: Torment. It was the first and only game to ever draw me in completely and immerse me in its world like my first reading of the 6 main Dragonlance books or the LotR trilogy did. I mean, I've been reading notes on a billboard/signpost for the past 5 minutes. It's interesting. The signpost happens to be a zombie. You're a zombie. The floating skull is flirting with the zombies. And it just kept getting weirder and better.

I like Fallout 1 best because all the settlements are mostly self-contained and concerned with their own problems.

All the inter-dependencies between places like Vault City, Gecko, New Reno, Redding, and NCR in Fallout 2 make for a "post-apocalyptic role-playing game" that is awfully… civilized. There aren't nearly enough important-seeming people you can just shoot in the face for the lulz without really worrying about long-term consequences, even if you're playing as a sociopath (the opportunity cost in missed content - let alone exp - is too high).

And constantly thinking about long-term consequences is the kind of real-life tedium that makes the escapism of a nomadic retro-future Mad Max game set in the wild west so appealing.

None, no RPG clicks with me no matter how many I play. All of them feel like calculators that rely on having amazing visuals.

Fallout is fucking garbage and you really need to broaden your horizons if any of them are the best RPGs you've ever played.

It's hard for me to decide on any one objective best RPG, but here are some of the ones I respect the most because they excel at my #1 indicator of quality in any game: meaningful depth with fulfilling replayability.

On top of my normalfag video game head is Oblivion and Morrowind, The Witcher 3.

I would even put Persona 3 or 4 there.. Even Persona 5 for its improvements on the combat mechanics and level designed dungeons, the whole sneak and get behind enemies to tear of their mask is fun.

When it comes to Tales games I don't have a favorite since the first entry into the series was with Tales of Innocence R on the vita and later with Tales of the Abyss on 3ds, Tales of Heart R on psvita.
I tried getting into Tales of graces and Xillia.

I got Tales of Berseria so after Persona 5 I'm gonna go full autism on the latest Tales game.

Also no list is complete without Dark/demon's Souls or BloodBorne.

Shame about those unskippable cutscenes though. They really make it a slog by disc 3. Pic related, most anti-fun part of the whole game.
