I would also add that although economic and political power have been eradicated there are still forms of power that can allow coercion or even brute force. Some people will still be more charismatic, have social status, be stronger, and so on.

Oh lovely, I'd start with Berger's Ways of Seeing. Its a short documentary series that seems quite Marxist imo. Kenneth Clarke also did a brilliant series called Civilisation that is great overview of western art, he even received a lordship for the series. Both were made into books but they're only a secondary companion and pale in comparison to both series, oddly enough.
As for books Janson's History of Art is the go to for a complete overview. After getting a decent grounding read some Gombrich like Art and Illusion or Preference of the Primitive. Also check out Panofsky's Idea: A concept in Art Theory. From the renaissance, there's also Alberti's On Painting. If you'd like a quick essay to read I'd look at Gombrich's "Meditations on a Hobby Horse or the roots of Artistic Form".
Unfortunately they are all very Eurocentric, I haven't been able to do some good reading on Eastern art yet. That being said, western art is particularly interesting and is unique in its point of view style, Berger mentions this in the series.
