Holla Forums recommends a game

Why does such thing as "picking up" exists? Why should game be shit for 10 hours before it gets good?
I'm specifically talking about Kingdom Hearts here, but this applies to other games as well.
Also that one user who said that combat doesn't change later on, FUCK YOU, with abilities like Air Sweep and autocombo super attacks combat is day and night between level 1 and level 40. Also only at that point enemies become actually dangerous and not just money and exp dispensers.

Is it really a good thing that abilities and combat maneuvers in games like KH and DMC unlock gradually? DMC kinda gets away with it, since even from get go you are given fair amount of options, but in KH you only start with single 3 hit combo and shit is dull as hell for a long while.

That actually DOES serve a point user, it's because by slowly unlocking new mechanics, you can keep beginners interested and teach them things that will EVENTUALLY make a game more in-depth, without overwhelming them when they start and are expected to pick-up on many different nuances. I don't argue it's good or bad, I don't like it in part but then muh rpg mechanics

While I have never played Kingdom Hearts I had the same experience with Silent Hunter. It starts out really slow and boring but as you get better at it it becomes faster but because of any change in the game but because you are better at finding targets and are in combat more often.

I picked up some games recommended by Holla Forums. Guess what? It's shit. But taste is digestive and subjective depending where your taste lies and is often never wrong.

Except if you play anything that is cock of doody. Or you are a fuckshit developer like digital homicide. Or should I say digital suicide?

...

I kinda like unlocking gameplay mechanics as games progress since it gives you a more solid feeling of getting more powerful and it makes the game feel a bit more varied even though it mechanically is the opposite. If you're a fast learner and you start with all the moves then you're likely to figure out the best moves right away and then you'll be using them the whole way through with no variation to look forward to, while if some abilities start out locked then you'll be forced to try out less good stuff and even if the stuff you unlock ends up not being better than the starting stuff you'll still look forward to the possibility that it could be.

...

You're here, aren't you? He already has

It's just bad design. Shigeru fucking Miyamoto, for all his faults, knew how to make something fun from start to finish.

A general rule of thumb is if a game still has semi-regular threads a year after release it's probably good, just keep in mind you might not like that genre.

this

which games?

every time lmao

How you handle it is still a different story though. Look at the specific situation the OP layed out.
Trying to ease a player into mechanics shouldn't take absurdly long, and the base you are given shouldn't be mind numbing boring and shallow.

Also depending on the game it shouldn't be like that at all.

You didn't read anything more than the first two lines of greentext

...

Wow, it's almost as if people have varied tastes from one another and what one person thinks is good might not be considered good by someone else? What a weird world we live in.

People told me that Sora no Kiseki FC started shitty but I found the world building and whatnot to be be fantastic.

red steel 2 is almost perfect

Bet you think you're hot stuff.
So when does it pick up?

wow, another person who only read the first two lines and missed that actual message of the thread

Except games recommended by Holla Forums's general consensus are usually great games, otherwise you wouldn't be here now would you?

It's just that you personally can't get into it, I didn't give a shit about Demon's souls when a friend got me to try it but after playing Spiral Knights FSC I understood how I was supposed to play it then loved it.

If you don't like something loved by people you who's opinion you trust it's usually because it simply hasn't clicked yet.

After Tarzan.

Nope. And we would never say that. Go back to cuckchan.

It's like tohu, people here just post porn and talk about their fetishes, but behind that game has good gameplay.
Even the first vanilla Kingdom Heart at the end of the game sports combat better than most PS2 games, being on par with shit like DMC and ZOE2.
I just wish it wasn't such huge degenerate magnet.

Please kill yourself.

My bad, it really doesn't feel that much different to me. Glad you're enjoying it, then.

Small things like parry button, gap closers, or automatic ground-to-air attacks that can be followed by basic combo are HUGE deal. I mostly play weeb action games, and little details like that kill or make games for me.
It should absolutely be available from the start.
Whip is high tier

There are games that are slow burns after all, especially with most RPGs.

Also everyone calls KH action RPG.
The only RPG aspects in there are stats and accessories. It's bare any more RPG than Devil May Cry.
I don't really get this notion.

Darn straight she is.

Yeah, sorry. They are relatively small, but they do add a bit to making the actual combat flow. On the other hand, now that you know that this exists, imagine how much fun you get to have playing the rest of the games and dealing with the fucktarded story!

Don't be autistic, I'm gonna put some examples here.
Most Doom players here despise Doom 4 since as a Doom game it falls short, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it, because it's not a 100% shit game.
The same goes for recommended games. Zachtronic games are very good but if you are not into the programming puzzle genre you won't like them at all.

I wish the adult fans of a children's game built around the intellectual property that created furries weren't so degenerate

usually because they design the mid-endgame gameplay first then get lazy and just remove abilities/features in the early game only to slowly reintroduce them into midgame
that + laziness and minimal/late testing = game that takes a while to start getting good

This is a major problem with all RPGs, doesn't matter where on the planet they come from. Generally you have to hit a certain level or reach a certain point to get the cool skills that change the gameplay from "hit enemy, get hit, hit back" into something more involved: buffs/debuffs that work, combination attacks, party organization, etc. By that time you've sunk at least two hours into the thing, usually more.

Let's say you commission me to write a book.
The only direction you give me is that a knight is the protagonist, and he must prevail in the end.
I make the book, and in the second page the knight has slain the dragon and won the day and that's where it ends.
Was it a good book?
Did it leave you satisfied?
Let's say i make an album.
The first two secongs are ultra god tier, the best shit you've heard of in your life, then the album has 3 more songs that are completely forgettable, and that's it.
Is that a good album?
Let's say i own a reasturant and i'm going to serve you a full course dinner.
So i give you the most exquisite lobster you've ever eaten in your life, and after that i give you half a piece of toast.
And then i present you with the bill, and that's the end of the night.
Do you exit that reasturant happy?

Do you see where i'm going with this?
Instant gratification is the ultimate mark of the casual.
It brands them for life, you can smell it off their stinking bodies, if a person is addicted to instant gratification they will ALWAYS remain a casual, no matter who they are.
The sooner you realize good things take time to appreciate, the sooner you'll stop being a filthy casual.

No, some games should just start with complexity all available. In RPGs it makes sense if the combat can be increasingly complex and new mechanics/tactics reveal themselves. On the other hand, the game should still be fun the entire way. Resonance of Fate handles this well, since you get everything you need at the beginning and you have to learn tactics in order to get good at the end. It still is satisfying to play and has semi-normal RPG progression, but there's no bullshit break-in period.

>It only gets really good after your finish your first playtrought

This
The fact that the game babies you and railroads you at the beginning pisses me off.
I want choice and that shit should be included from the very beginning, especially on RPGs.

This series starts out slowly to set up all the characters, environments, and story, and then usually has all the big action happen in the late game and sequelThese games are usually planned as one but end up so big they have to be spliy. What's there before certainly isn't bad, but it takes some patience to get through, and I know a lot of players drop the games early. The reward for staying through has been worth it, in my opinion.

fallout 4 wasnt that bad

If you treat it like a Fallout skinned Borderlands, it's okay. Like Fallout 3, it's not terrible by itself, but it's awful when compared to real Fallout games.

I'm from spain.

This is sorta subjective.
It's like an orgasm, some people can take half a day of edging before exploding, and some people like you two stroke their bent straws for 2 seconds and drip away immediately.
There's no satisfaction with no pain involved, otherwise it's too easy and quite frankly pretty boring.
It's the entire reason why AAA games aren't popular on Holla Forums in the first place.

then go back to spain, you taco.

Going from your logic fighting games is the most casual genre.
Instant gratification != gating gameplay behind arbitrary limits.

We don't eat tacos here and having to go back would imply that i ever left my country, which i didn't.

But it is. There's a reason niggers only play sports games, fighting games, and cowadooty.

Only Cold Steel II has that blessed feature. Nord is a fucking pain to get through in the first game.

Fighting games are the most niggerish of all games, why do you think that half of the FGC is just a bunch of apes?

Why does such thing as "prolonging the gameplay" exists? Why should game be good for 10 hours before it goes to shit in the next 90?
I'm specifically talking about JRPGs here, but this applies to other games as well.

Also that one user who said that the story line is worth it later on, FUCK YOU, with characteristics like Backtracking and unnecessarily long lategame dungeons is day and night between level 1 and level 40. Also only at that point enemies become extremely spongy and not just money and exp dispensers.

Is it really a good thing that dialog scenes and various endings in genres like VN and JRPG unlock via several playthroughs? VNs kinda get away with it, since even from get go you are given fair amount of options, but in JRPGs you only start with single main storyline and shit is dull as hell for a long while.

JRPGs is shit genre in general.
Especially since PS2 era.

Also
Every bethesda game ever.

SS2 starts out very strong and then just gets progressively worse from there. By the time you hit the rickenbacker it's a 4/10 game at best.

What are you running your mouth about now, faggot?

Radiation was too much for you or something?
Or you just couldnt navigate the ship without a GPS like the pleb you are?
Go back to Fallout 4

Because some devs look at the core game, the endgame, the part which they really need polished for anyone to appreciate. An intro is important, but in the grand scheme of things it goes down like a snack with no nutrition. Obviously a great game nails the intro, but not every game can hit that mark thanks to the wonderful quagmire that is game development.

...

Bravely Default?

Got it in one

What the fuck is with your post.

Instant gratification means to be rewarded without doing any work.
There'd still be a whole fucking game to play through in Kingdom Hearts, EVEN IF you started with most of the abilities.
All of the example you've given aren't about instant gratification, since none of the scenarios make a comparison to scenarios where you work for gratification.

Yes.
Yes I would fucking leave happy.
I'd much rather eat a lobster right away, then have the chef give me 1/10 of a lobster, and then tell me I'd get the next piece in an hour, and then spend 10 fucking hours sitting and doing nothing waiting for lobster.
Who the fuck would want that?
This is an example of BAD PACING, not INSTANT GRATIFICATION.

A good example of instant gratification,
would be to compare working hard in order to make enough money to buy food, versus getting free food for doing absolutely nothing.

By your twisted logic, the game cookie clicker would have to be the greatest game ever because it takes an absurdly long time to finish, and it constantly dangles tiny pieces of gratification the whole way through.
A game should draw you in because it is genuinely fun to play, not because it constantly dangles gratification in front of you, like a carrot in front of a pig.

recently they can't even do that right

Are you saying that the Rickenbacker wasn't shit, and that The Many wasn't an absolute horrid, poorly designed mess?

Nah I agree man, but I'm pretty sure KH 1 was created with a much more casual audience in mind than the later games, as they piled more features and more of a community started to appear, people knew what they were getting themselves into, more players were used to proud mode and all that shit. It shouldn't take that long, but you'd be surprised or maybe not, I mean that one polygon doom webm gets posted a lot, but people can be really slow at fucking learning in video games.

...

SMT IV is pretty guilty of this when you consider you only get a gun after a good few hours of gameplay and until then nothing even tells you that is going to be a thing.

Yes, yes I am
Try to make a better build next time

Stopped reading right therr, first paragraph and you're already wrong.

Bet you liked Dark Souls though you fucking weeb

But Gothic is awesome. Were you playing it with the systempack?

I never said it was difficult, and everyone knows melee facerolls the entire game, it's just that the level design is awful and the gameplay ceases to be enjoyable.

No I played Demon Souls and found it shit so didn't bother with dark souls

How dare you call me a weeb you faggot.

Yes, with systempack.

I have gothic2 installed but have no drive to play it.

Nah

Its the same shit but smaller and without a map, its probably the most vertical section of the game besides the Many (the one which is quite shite in both level design and pacing unlike its presetation and atmosphere which is top tier).

Seems like you have a case of shit taste friendo.

I started TiTS and put it down almost immediately because the anime tropes and cliches were too much. Came back to it after several months and marathoned it till the end. The combat never stopped sucking, though.

I bought SC day 1 but am having the same issue. The combat is so bad, man. It's so, so bad. I'll get back to it eventually.

What part of it are you getting hung up on? Is the combat just too hard for you?

I've only played through it twice, both times as melee, and both times it was extremely easy

Absolute trash.

Yes, The Many is pretty terrible looking but I don't know if I'd go so far as to call in non-navigational; it's not quite labyrinthine enough for that. Actually, the way The Many looks made me feel uneasy the whole time, like insects were crawling all over me. I enjoyed the feeling, and the atmosphere was spot on.

The Rickenbacker may be linear, but I feel like the music gets real good here. Some of the best music in the game are in the sections of the Rickenbacker and it has some pretty good spooky set pieces that feels missing from the Von Braun.

Once you adapt to the controls they feel like second nature and you'll be ripping high-level shit you have no business fighting apart except for things like Shadowbeasts which will run you the fuck down and gape your shitter, but if you're looking for a heavily story-driven experience, you definitely won't get that with Gothic. The fact that most of the game is just going off and doing your own thing is one of the reasons why it has such great replay value in my opinion.

Oh no, definitely on normal :^). My last playthrough was years ago, but I don't remember having any problem with any of that.

Well I started playing gothic because someone said that it's got a great story in another thread

Oh no, the story is as generic as it gets. It's the ridiculously immersive, de-leveled world, the awesome exploration, the danger, the NPCs, and the skill-based combat that are what make Gothic great.

I'd give G1/2 a 9.5/10 in the gameplay department, and a 5/10 for the story.

I'm a fucking sperg, disregard my faggotry.

Hey there, Knuckles.

On the topic on games taking too long to become good.
I'm 3 hours in KH Re Chain and the whole card system depresses the shit out of me.
Not only it is annoying and doesn't serve any purpose other than slow fights down, but the whole random encounter and room generation system completely removed interactivity and necessity of being aware of your surroundings of KH1.
Everything is colosseum fights now.

Am I missing something, or it takes 10 hours to get going too? Except I don't see how can it possibly improve. Game won't go back to exploration of hand crafted levels, will it?

That actually proves the rule. Both those games have merit to them regardless how much Holla Forums bitches. Then when you've actually played the games you realise just how retarded some of the complaints about them are.

Probably because the game needs to teach you a shitload of other stuff before you reach the top-tier shit, it also feels like a reward for the time you put into it and ensures that it doesn't get stale too quickly. For example in PoE making a new character after losing your old one from hardcore is a complete fucking pain in the ass for the first 20 to 30 levels but then soon after that it is pretty damn fun.

Because reality isn't perfect.
You don't assume developers decide the game should be shit until a certain point, right?
They're just incompetent or afraid of normalfags dropping it at the beginning because it's too overwhelmingly complex.

People like unlocking things so developers try to put this stuff in even if it breaks the game.
Abusing reward mechanisms are simplest most base psychological tool to make people want to play.
That's why we have grinding games and stuff like cookie clicker.

Fuck you. If your favourite meme game/series/book/whatever the fuck didn't manage to hook me in during the first 5 hours it can kiss my ass. The opening act is supposed to hook you in, and if it can't do that it pretty much fails at the most basic of concepts as a piece of media.
True, you have stuff like NieR and Kingdom Hearts that doesn't really get going until you're halfway there, but they had at least some redeeming qualities to start with and were fun all throughout. If you want to drag me through season 1 and 2 of [INSERT SHOW HERE] just so that I can enjoy season 3 then sincerely fuck you.

I agree with this.

Start planning your deck and using Sleights, the game restricts your fun by removing the first card you use in each sleight after you've used them as to not spam them, but other than that you just gotta use tactics to building your deck. Some people find pleasure in that, I found it annoying and lame as fuck and had to painstakingly drag myself along it just to finish it. If you don't like it now you're probably not gonna enjoy it at all, at least not until you get Ars Arcanum and mix it together with some other sleights so you can stunlock and absolutely crush every enemy in the game.

...

I don't understand why people think this.
For example, you could hate sports games, but at the same time you can't deny that NBA Jam is a great game.

...

It's usually artfags that try to justify their shit taste

I've had my fill of "incredibly dense retard thinks he's smart enough to wank for several paragraphs" this week.

With enough time Holla Forums would recommend literally everything except AAA games, even good ones.

This, dota 2 is actually fun.
Sure, it's a shit game where you have to mindlessly use your ultra-op powers to kill all enemy heroes all the time but it's quite fun especially in small doses.

like said, you should build a deck and use sleights, mainly against bosses. You can usually defeat random enemies by just mashing the attack button even in proud mode, until the last world where literally every heartless has high-numbered cards and most of the time are 9s.

...

Hitman is garbage though
Better than Absolution, but still garbage

There's a whole variety of reasons a game might start out poorly. A gentle learning curve is usually a good thing though 10 hours is a tad excessive.

Go fuck yourself.

Shut up you BR cunt

...

That what you need to do.

I've always enjoyed KH's sense of progression and careful growth to make sure you don't get too stronger than the enemies.

Sora starts out either swinging around a toy or rough around the edges since he was last doing shit and by the end of the game to compete with everything in whatever crazy location he's at he's learned all kinds of fancy moves he can do from all the fighting he's done and opponents faced. Like learning Sonic Blade from fighting a seasoned heavy swordsman like Cloud who does the same kind of charge albeit slower.

I always felt the reason you gradually unlock skills in DMC is mostly so you can learn how to use the moves you have one step at a time rather than having everything at the start and being overwhelmed by everything you have at your disposal. Then there's also story progression in which Dante gets weapons and skills from beating bosses or whatever else.

The idea is to give the player time to learn each new mechanic as it's introduced. The problem is that certain devs like Square Enix have no idea how to into pacing and spend way too much time on what is essentially an extended tutorial.

Tsukihime is necessary to understand Melty Blood. Now don't come back until you finish reading it.

The SystemPack is absolutely required, as it fixes the aspect ratio, removes the FPS cap Gothic 1 actually features a 24fps cap by default, disgusting, right?, fixes bugs, and allows native widescreen support.

Carefully follow the installation instructions.

Take Diego's advice and head on over to the Old Camp, looting what you can along the way. Once you're there, talk to people, get some quests, and learn how the world works. Do note that it is a prison colony and some people will try to scam you or fuck you over, so be on the lookout. Train up whatever skills you decide on (I recommend either one-handed or two-handed weapons and strength for your first playthrough), and either continue to do quests, or just explore the world for a while. The world is de-leveled (doesn't scale in any way), and enemies don't respawn (there are limited additional spawns during chapter changes as you go through the main story). At some point you'll need to decide whether you want to join the Old Camp, New Camp, or Swamp Sect, and by then you'll have a good understanding of the world. There are secrets fucking everywhere, but they're often guarded by pretty strong enemies, so exploration is high risk high reward. Also, if you see an enemy that looks scary, it probably is, and it's sometimes better to just fuck off and live another day, and come back when you're stronger (or sprint past the enemies like a baller and steal their treasure while they try to gape your shitpussy).

One last thing, you can actually swing your weapon faster by timing your swings, as opposed to just mashing, and once you get that timing down you can fight shit you have no business fighting normally and come out on top. Have fun, user.

Stop being a slowpoke faggot.

I like when games have all advanced mechanics available to the player from the start while slowly teaching it to beginners as the game progresses. It sets up scenarios and situations where a specific mechanic/ability is required to teach a beginner how to do it properly meanwhile advanced players have been doing said ability since the beginning. It's a great way to prolong the life of a game and adds immeasurable replayability. As you get better you want to restart from the beginning and see how fast you can destroy starter enemies that may have given you problems when you didn't know how to play right.

you no nothing about long tutorials in good games.

must… not… take bait

They really should have made the balance changes in NoTR optional (call it Hardcore mode, or whatever). They're fantastic for veterans of the series, and really make NoTR feel like a completely different game from vanilla G2. That said, I can definitely sympathize with someone new to the series who plays through G1, and then downloads G2 Gold which by default installs NoTR, and just gets their shitpussy gaped after expecting the difficulty to be on par with G1.

What the fuck was that? Why all of the sudden game turned into lain-tier psychological drama about fake identities and non-existing persons? And then I'm supposed to play as comedy trio again, while it is clearly implied that shit will go only down from there?
I mean Re Chain already went full anime compared to KH1, but this? What the fuck?
What the fuck?! Will I see Roxas again?

It's garbage highschool slice of life magic academy waifu anime shit. I didn't find it particularly good, and had to force myself to complete it. The gameplay itself was competent, but it inherited this largely from Trails in the Sky - which was a fantastic game. Mission structure was WAY too formulaic, and the highschool setting was just a complete turn off.

And for a waifu game, the only girl even close to being waifu material is out of the running since she's a dyke pussy hound. Not even some good delicious brown like Sherazzard.

You can't make this shit up

Is something wrong with me?

Fuck people who spout this shit. If your game doesn't hook me within two hours it can fuck off and die and that time is at very best to considering that at the two hour mark I could've watched a movie I really enjoy and still have maybe 30 minutes to spare.

I'm not going to be a masochist and suffer through 18 extra hours that I could be doing something better just because some jackass online told me that it gets good later. I've seen games get good in five minutes so I see no reason as to why a game should take twenty hours to get good.

I'm looking at you, KOTOR, Kingdom Hearts, Persona, Dead Rising, Dragon's Dogma, STALKER. Fuck you for wasting my time and money

It's almost like this place is filled with fallible humans sharing their opinions or something.
