If anything, downscaling the resolution would be a good way to reduce the power consumption. If it's 720 when plugged in, ok that's bullshit. But 4K is a meme. It's an easy way for companies to reduce the reasons why a tv is better down to just one number instead of actually improving television and monitor hardware in meaningful ways.

It wouldn't surprise me too much, though. 720p on the handheld screen makes sense if the plan is to underclock when not docked to save power. Presumably it'll run at least some games in 1080p when docked (remember, a lot of that is up to developers so it won't be all games–PS3 and 360 were perfectly capable of doing 1080p games, devs just often chose to sacrifice that in order to push in other areas). I'd rather drop resolution than framerate, it's not a big deal with a screen that small anyway.

Making raw comparison to a phone/tablet is at best making a large stretch at this point. Even if we got the exact specs right now, we don't know how much of it would be taken by background resources for one thing.

For instance the PS4 only uses like 5 1/2 gigs of ram for games. The rest goes to the home menu with all the bells and whistles. So if the switch only uses 4 gigs, but actually takes advantage of nearly all of it. That would makes a difference.

This, it's like people need more and more absurdly high resolutions on their tiny ass screens for some dick measuring contest without thinking why would they actually need it.

You can do a lot with additional power, which the dock will provide. Only time will tell, though.

This is what I was also thing. That and is there any other handheld that has a higher resolution? I mean, if it can actually run a AAA game from around 5 years ago at 720p (and assuming consistent 30, hoping for 60fps), that isn't bad. That's progress in terms of portable hardware. Yeah, it's not good specs, but considering the fact that it's portable, and it does balance out a little.

The 3DS had a pathetic as fuck library compared to the DS's library. If it didn't have those 3 system sellers there would be nothing to push the system for normalfags and it would easily be Nintendo's worst selling portable. Take those games out of the equation and the 3DS has the worst system to software attachment rate out of Nintendo's portable line up. Even keeping the games in and you can see the system has a worse software attachment rate than the fucking vita.

The PS Vita's screen is 5" and is 544p. For the short while I had it, it looked pretty good.
6" at 720p should look about as good if not a little better.

They only said that the screen will likely be 720p, not that the Switch can only run games at that resolution. For the thing to be worth its weight when docked it better be able to handle 1080p at 60fps.

I doubt that it will be both 1080p and 60fps. Nintendo has always been about being a console rather than a wanna-be PC with less power and less freedom.

Then again, Nintendo has been known to be different with regards to tech, and the fact that this is a two in one console (being both console and handheld) means that maybe they can get away with making it 1080p and 60fps, and work that into the price with consumers reasoning that the price is due to how it's also portable.

That's more a testament to the state of the industry as a whole. Most Systems don't have a lot of worthwhile games.

PS4 can barely handle 1080p 60fps. But then again that may be due to them just targeting the highest possible graphics they can pull out of it.

They aren't, at least not in the same way as the Wii U. You can keep the thing docked permanently if you so wish, whereas the fucking Wii U made you use the tablet for basic shit like the settings menu and even some games with pro controller support make you use it for certain parts.

Three seems weak, but Sony repeated many of the mistakes they made with PSP and then some with Vita. The memory cards really fucked them over, though, even Nintendo isn't that cheap that they would drop SD cards.

wth? i thought the difference between 1080p and 720p was the distance from which you were from the display screen. 720 is better if your closer to your display screen be it a monitor or TV 720 was fine. BUT 1080 on the other hand if you were going to be farther away like say 15~20 feet then 1080 was the way to go as the pixils wouldnt get blurred from the distance. the switch screen being a handheld would only need 720p i would think. if you NEED 1080p and higher, youre just in need of the latest and also must be nice to have money to upgrade everytime something new comes along!

You're conveniently forgetting that consoles in most cases can't reliably run their "native resolution" at 60fps anyways especially with turd-party titles. A lower res would be a good thing because I don't think the Tegra in this thing is going to be all that powerful therefore lower res would be aiming for something doable whereas the competition is releasing 4K consoles with hardware that can't do 4K at 60fps.
