I got into an argument with someone (could be (((Zach))) actually) over at /film/ a while back, when talking about ‘Alien’. I think that Ridley Scott is a very overrated director, similar to Del Toro – his films look great, but that’s all. I suggested that ‘Alien’ directed by John Carpenter could have been just as good – if not better. Carpenter & O’Bannon had already made ‘Dark Star’ together back in 1974, and they obviously worked well together and got along, so ‘Alien’ written by O’Bannon & directed by Carpenter would’ve been a perfect match IMHO. If they had teamed up to do ‘Alien’, we might have gotten Kurt Russell as captain Dallas, and Carpenter doing a synth/electronic soundtrack. That would have been interesting to see.

I think ‘Galaxy of Terror’ has that Italiansploitation/giallo feel to it as well, though the director is American. James Cameron worked on the special effects on it, before he got famous, and probably before he even started directing.

Hear, hear! Carpenter is one of the great horror directors IMHO, and him working with Russell would’ve been an almost guaranteed entertaining film. I think it was O’Bannon who contacted H. R. Giger to work on the design, so if Carpenter, Russel & O’Bannon had worked together we would still have Giger’s artwork/design as well.

Some really neat ideas went into it, but the Planet Master scenes and everything related to it, should have been scrapped. Without those scenes it would have been much better. A young Robert Englund is in it too. It is infamous for one scene in particular though, where one of the female characters is raped to death by space slug/monster.

Yeah, there probably were more misses than hits, but I don’t think it is as bad as some like to claim. There might be some nostalgia influencing my opinion though - I like some of the styles of the early ’00s as well.

No, I had downloaded it several months ago, and it was on my backlog, but then my PC crashed. I’ve learned my lesson now though, now I do double backups of everything. Bought a second portable hard drive to make sure I’ll never lose so much again.
I haven’t seen that many Stephen King films, and I only ever listened to the audiobook of ‘Pet Semetary’. I skipped King and went directly to H. P. Lovecraft & M. R. James to get my horror stories. I think horror works best as short stories/films, and King’s books drag on and on, and loses all the atmosphere and tension.

Should I add it to my must-watch list? It’s been a while since I saw ‘Galaxy of Terror’, but I think that the shite scenes could easily have been cut out by a fanedtior, and it could have been a hidden B-movie sci-fi horror gem. The special effects were actually quite impressive for a B-movie – James Cameron was great at getting the most out of small budgets back in the day, before he started doing blockbusters only. I rewatched ‘The Gate’ from 1987 the other day, and it was actually better than I remembered. Great music and practical effects. The kids/teens even use ‘fag’ as an insult in it – twice!

This once scene from ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’, with Faye Dunaway reminded me of certain scenes in SQ, with Chanel – even the (almost) spiral stairs in the background are similar to the ones in the KKT sorority house.
