As for retirement, man should only retire when he is too weak to work. Work is what keeps us alive; not work in the cubicle sense, but active work.

I am lucky enough to still have a pension due to when I started with the company that I work at, but many of my peers with less tenure and with different work agreements do not. It was around the mid-2000's that a lot of the last hold-outs claimed that dropping pensions was needed to stay "competitive". Bunc of fucking shat, it's really about cupping the largest shareholders balls (exec mgmt).

I started in the workforce doing metal fab/welding, but eventually moved into the technology field once finally I decided to do some studying. That said, I now have a multicraft skill set and an accompanying shop at home to keep me busy when not working or doing family related stuff (teaching wife and children in small doses about the degeneracy that has put a strangle-hold on our country), I work on projects in there.

I figure that I will do this till I leave this vessel and move on to the next. No harm in it because "retirement" IMO is a sham anyway. Working all your life away at a corporation, saving all of your sheckles for a destination that you may never arrive at. You could die tomorrow and all that irrational frugileness could hold you back from living life while you have it.

I pulled out of my 401k mostly. Took a loan some years ago as a down payment on house and cashed the rest in to help build said shop and a bit of equipment. My dad knew of people who lost everything due market bubbles and too heavily invested into said bubbles; .com crash of 2000 was a big one if you held tech stock. Now wall street has had a bail out plan via austerity if needed for some time now. Big banks to big to jail/fail was a bunch of fucking bullshit as well. I have lost all faith in worshipping fiat currency, and for the most part use most of it as I get it; part of my "here and now" life philosophy.

I have a few greys and bones hurt from time to time, but will still engage in sizeable and physically demanding construction projects. I believe that more value comes from building your own shit (especially if quality build) than buying some shit or service from somebody else. I am building a cargo trailer camper/toy hauler/bug-out conversion right now that will have all of the amenities and looks of a factory built trailer. Building a deck on the back of my house tomorrow with 3 other fellas and will reciprocate the favor to them in coming weeks, months, years.

Company matched funds in my 401K take a year to be vested. Ive changed jobs 3 different times over my lifetime with 401K's and thats how it always worked.

If you are only putting in what the company matches then your never going to grow. If you don't like the 401K then put in what the just put in what the company matches.Then put more in to an IRA or something. People really need to start saving at least 10-20% of their income starting in their early 20s.

You raise an interesting point. I'm in healthcare in Leafland and one issue that no one considers for our elders is the difference between life expectancy and functional years. You might live to 82 but you're completely dependent on others the last 7 years.

We walk into very uncomfortable territory where the average family can't support them on their own. Leading to the necessity of nursing homes and the like. Retirement age used to be 2-5 years below life expectancy, now its 7-20 years.

Multigenerational homes where grandparents assist in childrearing are advantageous until you've got two sets of diapers to change.

The problem isn't the "bad guys in charge", it's the people who allow them to be in charge. Endless revolutions and political campaigns have been centered on throwing out the "bad guys in charge", it doesn't solve the problem.

For the last two years a fiscal hotshot at seminars that our firm visits has been saying that people need to get educated on investing and mid-term/long-term trading, so they can build and manage their own l/s portfolios for retirement. Because the social security fund for retirement (funded by taxes) is already buckling, the current reserves are already insufficient and deficit is growing. The difference is now paid with general government funds, so expenses our now leaking into other budgets and that's not going to last very long. On the semi-gov and commercial side (pension funds) the same thing is happening, except they deal with it by cutting pensions while at the same time raising premiums and the retirement age. Ultimately meaning you end up paying more for less, or even nothing at all if you don't make it to the increasingly ridiculous retirement age.

This is the situation for most Western countries, with some countries making it worse by giving immigrants access to social security retirement, paying them pension for which they never contributed taxes. One heads up i'd like to give everyone; when your government scraps social security retirement, be sure to check that they also scrap retirement premiums from income tax. And if they don't; hit the streets and set everything on fire until they do.

Enjoy it while you can. The retirement crisis and tidal waves of immigrants are already bearing down heavily on all SS budgets. Make sure you have backup for when the time comes, because it will.

We can handle 20 trillion in debt, but only at current interest rates. If we ever lost our status as the reserve currency and the US Governments cost of money went up to 5% or 6% the interest payments would have the effect of eating up all discretionary spending.

The inside the beltway mindset is that we can always print our way out of cash flow problems, but a lot of other countries thought the same thing as well. If and when the interest rates go up we will have to decide between the international clique and our own people.
