If someone preorders a game, they're intent on getting it. Reviews won't change their mind. It has to be either videos of gameplay or familiar people who actually played the game and shared their opinions via word of mouth rather than a 3k word article about how this games (and its politics) aren't good.

If someone is skeptical about a game, they'll wait until AFTER release and then listen to impressions from people who are playing it/watch some videos of gameplay, and not some 3k word article about the game.

Watching people play it, getting information from people who are familiar have more power than a stranger's article with an arbitrary number. Youtubers have a ton of power. I'm pretty sure PewdiePie's Last Guardian video showed enough to have people make their own decisions on whether they want it or not.

This is probably true at this point, but wasn't always the case. There used to be a few writers who I'd rely on their opinion before buying a game, those days are gone though.

It's in the consumer's interest to not pre-order, day 1 purchase and to wait a week or two instead. If someone is dumb enough to purchase something with no to minimum information about it, it's their fault.

He is right in the way that it does hamper journos in doing their reviews and thus reduce the amount of information available to consumers at launch, but ultimately it matters far less than one might think.

I don't believe he disagrees with that, he's (I hope) aware that most people these days seek reviews/opinions on games somewhere that isn't games reviews. What he's saying however is that this shit openly means that devs can entirely control who gets to write about the game and critique it before people have had an already pretty much ready idea of what the game is made of.
And, to be honest, most youtubers don't really hold a lot of scrutiny or professionalism regarding reviews or critique. most play the game and edit an entertaining playthrough of it, and that's pretty much it. It's infinitely easier to control what gets shown in a youtube video than in an article; bugs, glitches, stupid script, etc. can be entirely hidden when you're not a "journalist"… sadly, whatever this means these days.
And that's the crux of the issue : nowadays, everyone and their sister is a journo. So in a way, people trust whomever they'd rather be listening to.

I'd say it's better to act in the pro-consumer way. One glorious day in the future we might yet convince every gamer to wait a few days after release before buying, but until then, better give them some guidance.

The best thing to do is to convince people to not preorder or buy day 1.

The solution to that is to not give review copies to those particular websites. A site like Polygon ignores your game's good points in favor of writing a hit review that uses the word "sexism" 13 times in the space of 4 paragraphs? Drop Polygon, keep sending copies elsewhere. Hell, there's already precedent for this. Sterling himself was blacklisted by at least one publisher.

I did read the blogposts. When he wrote the piece where he endorsed Clinton it was tongue in cheek. However it was also written because he knew that the Clinton people would still take that he was supporting Clinton from it and when the intention was to mislead people into thinking that he was supporting Clinton then it is effectively a Clinton endorsement.

Now if you want to dispute that he couldn't have possibly thought that people would actually believe it I can you link you to the video where he says otherwise.
