Was he supposed to be Abe Sapien or not?

After seeing the film I think it's more based on the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Honestly, though when I first saw the trailer I thought it was an Abe Sapien film.

My only real issue with the "Amphibian Man"'s that's what he's created as design is that he's kinda ugly.
It's an easy fix, just get rid of those nostrils and make his lips a little less human and his design would have been a lot more appealing.

Having seen (AND DISLIKED) this movie I can say this video is an extreme reach.
Going past his verbose nature, he's interpreting this movie a certain way and then tearing into his interpretation. This wouldn't be so bad if he didn't try and act like his interpretation is what the movie is actually about.

Given how far into the kool-aid Del Toro has gotten in recent years, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if this interpretation was spot on. The setting, the characters, the concept… I mean, this isn't a movie that builds to some kind of fascinating, uniquely unnerving horror/fantasy set against the backdrop of the cold war… It builds to a mute woman fucking a fish monster in a bathtub and that's not treated as a shocking or grotesque thing, but something almost comical and fun.

The only thing even remotely played as horrific is when he eats the cat.

As I said, I didn't like the movie, but it seemed a generic "Beauty and the Beast" type of love story.
The basic archetype has existed for hundreds of years, this one isn't out of the ordinary.

But the Beauty and the Beast archetype usually ends in the reveal that the Beast is actually truly a good person, a victim of circumstance, and someone who grows from their beastliness.

This movie ends with the fish monster using his magic powers to save mute girl's life by turning her into a fish creature too.
