Actually, in addition to "general requirements' like sociology they added ANOTHER humanities course we were required to take, this time a 3000 level one all about gender and race or a combination of them. They are courses that have nothing to do with my major, and you can't substitute another credit in for one of these dozen or so highly specific courses you have to take—

The reason why is not simple but can be simply explained. We have to pay full price for those courses, the department of those courses gets more money depending on the number of student enrolled, and recently these women/minority studies departments have swollen so much that there is no longer enough genuine student interest to fill them out. Since us students obviously have an infinite supply of debt, and our degrees are held hostage, these departments have become so powerful on campus that they can force us to take upper-division courses that nobody wants and hand us the bill.
