Each of the characters has a good reason to be in the school, the girls already care about each other and have no one else to turn to (except maybe Akane, but she is bound to the MC in other ways) and are put in a situation where they have to work together to achieve a common goal.

Everything past that point is tweaking their interactions to foster the idea they are a family and should stay together.

It has. With my favorite series. Mugen Senshi Valis had four awesome games. Valis IV was release in the early nineties, and was followed up more than a decade later, in 2006, by Valis X.
Valis X was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise, but, get this, instead of following up the previous games (all fucking awesome action games), it is a complete reboot, retelling all of the previous games in the form of an eroge. Of course, the best way they found to do this was turning the protagonists into useless cum dumpsters that get raped by every single enemy and sometimes by their friends too.
Not only was that the last entry in the series, it was also the last game Telenet ever published.

The eroge features a lot of different things, but it's mostly tame. A lot of tentacles and rape, for the most part. Although there's a candle here and there, some futa, pregnancy, births, stabbings and even a scene where the girl gets turned into stone while being fucked.

As far as I remember, up to Valis IV the games got ported to every major console and were actually released in North America.

Hell fucking yes. I love all these motherfucking games. From Valis I to Valis IV and Valis SD, they are all pretty great side scrollers. The PC Engine versions are the way to go, especially since they have the FMVs. However, only the second and the third games received english versions in that console. For the first game, if you'd like to understand the story, the Mega Drive received an english version that is pretty great. For the fourth, you'd have to settle for the heavily gimped Super Valis IV for the Snes.
If you don't care about playing games with moonrunes and are a patient person, I can upload Valis Complete, which features all the four games fully ported to Windows plus some very cool extra content.
