Then 7 got popular. Really popular. So popular that, as with all things, his personality and design get misconstrued constantly by fans. This misconstruing eventually bleeds into how the devs and writers saw 7. So Cloud goes from being satire of such 90s heroes in JRPGs to becoming the very thing he was made to make fun of, and now Squeenix is making more heroes like those as if they didn't learn their lesson at all.

Pop culture trends, like fashion, is a cyclical beast, and we've only just now gotten back to that part of the loop. In the west, it's taken the gung-ho kill-em-all gunners from the past few gens and made them sad and broody and regretful of their actions. In the east, it's Cloud clones errywhere.

He did not parody one specific character; I really don't know how you got to that conclusion. His design was meant to be an amalgamation of several tropes and cliches apparent in character design from the 90s, from the ridiculously large weapons to the abnormal hairstyles.

DeSu at least has support demons so each clash feels like a "battle" from a real SMT somewhat. VP:C forces you to cluster your characters to juggle and combo, which is what the entire combat system is based upon, meaning the spacial placement element of a sRPG is pretty much pointless, as you'll always be moving everyone in a cluster.

It feels like they originally wanted the combat from Silmeria but couldn't get it to work mechanically on the DS, and thus went with an SRPG framework rather than the tried and true platforming one.

Hm. Sounds like Lost Dimension, which could be good but really not a good idea for sRPG.

I haven't beaten the second one, or the first for that matter, though. I should really sit down and get through them, especially with the build of PCSX2 I have for VP2.

This dinky little mini game, which is being released as a mobile tie-in game was the final nail in the coffin for me. My reaction was already basically "meh" because the cast look like a fucking boy band, and Squeenix is now terrified of adding genuine sex appeal. Even when they do the character is flat and boring, and there's nothing more unattractive to me than a small-chested character putting her tiny tits on display and trying to pretend she has cleavage.

The games used to have a nice set up, three female characters, something for everyone's taste. If you liked voluptuous busty characters on account of being a heterosexual, you had Tifa, Lulu, or Beatrix. If you were a closet pedophile and wanted an energetic ditzy athletic character, you could be satisfied with Yuffie, Rikku, Selphie or even Eiko (sick fucks.) If you were a boring beta with no real opinion of your own who went after the plain chicks because much like Chris-chan you thought you'd have a better shot with them, for you there was Aeris and Rinoa. Everybody's catered to, everyone's happy, it feels at least slightly realistic.

From FFX-2 on, that was done. No more busty characters, but they still dress slutty sometimes. Now there's nothing that appeals to me and all their female characters look boring and samey. Look at the ugly chick that pops up in this trailer. She's boner kill. Disgusting. The artwork looks so beneath Square's typical standards. Remember, this is the company where even if everything else was total shit, the two things you could depend on were good graphics and good music. Not right now, you don't.

And the fucking dialog in this trailer. I can see the different personalities being portrayed, and they all suck. Big guy says "That's mah gayme!" Guy with glasses crosses his arms and goes "Seriously?" The voice acting is horrendous.

Play the first one before you even go near Silmeria. Silmeria pretends to be a prequel for the first three quarters, then pulls a giant plot twist and reveal's it's all "post" VP1's A ending.

Also, because the developers misunderstood their own systems, Hard mode in VP1 is the easiest, as all characters start at level 1, meanig you can slap a Bracelet of Zoe or whatever the thing that gives you an extra couple hundred skill points per level, making sending up Einherjar easier. Also it has all the content, which the other two difficulties do not.

Cloud's backstory, plot, friends and enemies all perfectly mirror another very popular western hero, though I won't specify who just yet. It occurred to me months ago in another FF thread when I was trying to think of someone to compare his personality to since he really doesn't do the whole brooding thing.

At first I thought he was just a straight rip-off of this character, but the interesting thing is that after FF7 came out, this other character's story then started to mirror the later plot of FF7, so it's not strictly one way, they simply are the same character.

Sadly, FF is one of those series that has been watered the fuck down to make it easier for normalfags to swallow. They won't flock to it, but it'll be large enough to get a lot of their attention.

It'll be Fallout 4 all over again; masses will either pre-order or buy on launch day, play it, realize it's shit, but pretend to like it anyway.

Possibly the last main title FF game. I'm expecting to see some spinoffs, either tied into XV or related to things from the series, like chocobos or moogles.

I will say, I haven't played any FF except Crystal Chronicles and 8, so to see modern tech in a JRPG would be fun. Not FF, but I think it'll work out. If it's at least half as fun as Resonance of Fate, I'll have a good time.

Hardly: this thing has been through development hell, and months from its scheduled release it's still getting pushed back. The game was originally gonna share a universe with the XIII/Type-0 sub-series before getting a mainline number slapped over it in place of an original concept, and God knows people are still gonna hold that against it. The demos both underwhelmed, the tie-ins were poorly received, and the rest of the hype turned people off more than anything. There's simply too much drama and financial mismanagement weighing this thing down for a projected goal that would have been near-impossible even if that wasn't the case. No FF title ever reached a solid 8 figure sales, not even VII with it's decades of cameo-whoring. This title is a sink-or-swim moment for Square by their own admission, and their life-jacket is made of solid fucking osmium.

Why was Nomura replaced with Tabata as the game director again? Like why replace a guy who has an understanding of how action games work with a guy who doesn't understand or like action games? Seriously this is the guy who had to get the idea of a manual dodge from fan feedback as opposed to the default auto-dodge bullshit that was in the game to begin with. If this game flops (or just doesn't hit that absurd 10 million copies sold) the poor man's career is probably going to end, which is kind of sad considering he just wasn't the right man for the job.

Based on the demos the game is probably going to play like a more Type-0 except the combat will somehow be more floaty and awkward, which was already an issue in Type-0. The real question is how many people are going to be idiots and buy it based solely on hype, and who are going to be patient and wait based on the word of mouth. FF has a pretty diminished popularity in the West so it's a straight up tossup of what is going to happen.

It's still relatable to a gender swapped Cid. It's not a huge name change and who knows maybe they found the name 'Cidney' offensive in their language. Either ways the game looks shit so far and the only thing that can hold things together is the gameplay which we've seen and pretty much disappointing.

Dragon Quarter was a pretty good game though, even though it broke from formula. As a kid surrounded by RPGs where grinding, intentional or not, made everything really easy, this was one the few games where I had to strategize instead of just kill X thing first, use elemental weakness, stay healed, cure statuses, win gaem.
