Time passed and they realized they were running out of war settings, and they decided to release MW1, which was in some way "revolutionary" for it's time. What happened with all the WW1/WW2 fanatics, then? Well, they got shat on, in exchange for a title that happened to be fairly fun and attracted hordes of new fans. In fact, MW1 was so memorable everyone started copying it over and over, including Infinity Ward themselves, because they knew it made money, and thus turned an original idea into a shitty, repetitive cashcow, and so CoD went back to being the same game release after release, because that's what their fanbase asked for.

Fast forward a few years, and modern shooters start to become unfashionable. Infinity Ward realizes they have to become original again, and they decide to make everything crazier, much in the same fashion MW1 was crazier than the previous games. But this time, it turns out fans wanted more retro shooters again, like Battlefield 1, instead of more futuristic stuff. But that's not the point.

CoD and the likes tend to follow market trends, and whenever that market burns out because the consumers get bored of the same shit over and over, they simply decide to reinvent themselves, in which case at least one of the companies involved in pandering to normalfags comes up with a novel idea that marks the next fad. These "novel ideas" are what push the industry forward, and I would argue that the only problem is we don't get them as continuously as it should, but that's beside the point. Just focus on the periods inbetween these original ideas: they are shit and generic, because they are pandering to market trends. Now, imagine that instead of 7 years of shitty generic modern era shooters, you get a permanent influx of generic harem animes in which the only difference is the hair colour of the girls. How boring, right?
