I tried to join the military. Top 1-2% on my officer exams. Got turned away from all branches for a small retinal issue that doesn't impact vision nor will it ever. I'm in great shape too. Literally one of the first things you learn about the military when you stick your toes in the water is that the Army, and most of the regular line units in the Military, tend to be really mundane in alot of things they do. Those people who join and end up in jobs that transition well to the civilian sector like welding, electrical, nuclear engineering, pilot or helicopter repair typically do not re-enlist in the military due to the ease of getting a much higher paying job in the civilian sector.

Secondly, the jobs that typically seem the most high speed to people like infantry for example, are absolute hell on the body and mind. These types of people are ussually sold on the Call of Duty type bullshit thinking they will be some sort of action star and get all the bitches, when in actuality they will be mopping the floors and field daying the barracks for four years. So naturally, very few of them re-enlist.

Then you have the jobs where the dindus accumulate like suppy. The home boy in the hood mentality is strong in supply as they have realised they can just sit in the armory and smoke away their years all while shitting out kids with some dependa thus increasing their paycheck.

The only jobs in the military worth doing for people with a brain are the ones that you can either A. get with trade school or B. require the most alpha of chads to get like Ranger, Recon or SEAL.

Too many people are well aware of the problems that exist within the US military. Changes need to be made if they want to attract and keep troops. College education won't be a large enough carrot for much longer. Just problems I recognized while in and out.

Barracks life versus housing life is a tremendous QOL difference. Barracks needs to be treated closer to home life / apartments or housing life needs to be treated like barracks life. Pick one, it doesn't matter.

There needs to be a divide, but cultural marxism in the education pipeline of the common officer degrees is stretching it. Trying to find stats on this, I thought I had a link somewhere but can't find it. So all I have is the officers I talked to while I was in and their degree types. As a Chair Force aircraft maintainer, I can tell you that we have the lowest manning and retention statistics across the service. Fucking services and security forces have higher retention stats.
The last statistic I came across pinned manning at 80% for all maintenance jobs. That means that you're down a work crew in a small shop and a third of a shift in a big one. With a global mission, the slack has to be taken up by someone. 12+ hour shifts aren't uncommon in theater, with 10+ hour shifts common at both OCONUS and CONUS bases.
Those shifts can grind a man into the dirt. I've seen more retirements and outright refusals to re-enlist in the last few months than I've seen in the 4 years I've been enlisted. Retention is abysmal right now.
Another fun statistic is that the Air Force's numbers are the lowest that they've ever been, lower even than when the Air Force was designated an independent service branch in 1947.

I was in the Marines. I don't think I ever saw an Asian officer. Maybe one senior enlisted was an Asian that I can recall. At least in 2012 the percentage of Asians in the Armed Forces was 3.7%. 4.3% of the officer corps were Asian then too. So they weren't that common then. That was the last year I was in. No idea what it looks like now.

US Coast Guard has the toughest basic training of all the services. They expose recruits to extreme stress because the individual may have to drive a little boat out into insane waves to rescue someone, and maybe have survivors screaming and otherwise freaking out as he calmly proceeds with the rescue.
