That was the whole point of intermediate cartridges - So that you can control it in full auto while being able to carry enough ammo to fire in full auto in the first place, while being able to use it at rifle ranges with decent effectiveness in semi auto if needed.

They disassemble differently, they have very different operating mechanisms, etc. The AK actually has more influence from the M1 Garand than the StG.44.
