PPL need to learn CRF is fantastic if you want to make say a movie rip etc, but end wise is you don't really know with an encode what the final bitrate will be

That's why 2 pass will always be superior, because if you tell FFMPEG to go between 0% and 400% of its target bitrate depending on how much activity/complexity going on in the scene it will raise/lower the bitrate as needed. This is great because if you have a scene with nothing going on it lowers the bitrate just to raise it up for scenes that involve detail

If you don't have a hardware capture unit like that, the lowest impact capture you can do is with OBS in Windowed capture mode, or something like Nvidia Shadowplay or AMD's Crimson capture, personally myself I bought and used DXTORY until hardware assist video capture came out

If you have An intel CPU with quicksync or Nvdia its actually better to use its hardware capture with OBS than Shadowplay because OBS for capturing you can not only set the bitrate, but you can use NVENC 2 pass High Quality mode which is a huge jump up from the 1 pass Shadowplay uses

OBS, you can use nvenc with it to encode with almost no performance loss since it uses dedicated hardware on the gpu and can output to system RAM which is extremely rare to be a bottleneck, even if you're using DDR2
You can also do lossless encodes with 5-7% cpu use if you tell obs to encode with ffvhuff and flac profile 1 but the bitrate will blow up (not really a problem, just be aware you might run out of space on a low capacity hard drive in minutes)

Next up are the Bran-Flakes. Know that one Avalanches song everyone likes? Yeah they're that.

Forces 25 reference frames always, up to a possible 25 + 25 references

All encoders if you set say 16 ref frames it will only store as many ref frames as it thinks it needs based on diminishing returns, if say it gets to 7 ref frames and frame 8 will only have a 0.0001% increase in potential image quality it scraps all any additional ref frames and continues to the next frame to render

By setting alt-ref to 25 and a force factor of 6 you're basically telling FFMPEG to "Fuck off, fuck you, I want 25 ref frames and you're going to do it asshole"

Realistically you're probably only looking at around 30-35 ref frames even with a 25 lag in + 25 ref frames, but when you only got 12mb to play with every bit counts in where its placed

"-lag-in-frames 25" besides the weird name tells you want about 25 alternate reference frames. "-auto-alt-ref" let's the encoder pick as many as it wants while still giving your suggestion some weight, for some reason you need both enabled (non 0) for alternate reference frames to work though. If your decoder shows the extra time those frames add, actually plays them in the end or has a weird random band around the picture it's a vp9 decoder not conforming to the standard either due to a bug, unimplemented funcionality or poor design
Alternate reference frames are frames other frames can refer to if they're similar enough, so instead of reencoding the same picture a bazillion times some extra invisible frames (hence the extra 25 seconds you experienced, 25 frames at 1fps = 25 seconds) are added at the end of the file, saving space and increasing quality on files where there is enough repeated imagery. Now that i think about it it might not make a lot of sense on this file since in vp9 frames can refer to their neighbouring frames too
Also make sure you're using opus, it (should) provide better quality than vorbis all the time but unless you specify it (-c:a libopus) ffmpeg defaults to the vorbis codec on webms.
VP9 also makes much much higher quality video but unless you specify it (-c:a libvpx-vp9) ffmpeg should default to vp8 for webms (i heard talk about making vp9 the default but i'm not sure if it went through you'll have to see)

I was using Shadowplay before but after this recent update which changed it to geforce """""experience""""" it's fucked and I can't get it to work anymore.
The thing I really liked about shadowplay is that if something unexpected happened in a game for example you could save a video of what happened in the last 2 minutes, you didn't have to be actually recording, you know?
