I actually hate it, it's just that I've been getting good results from it (and not just me, everyone who jumps rope knows how effective it is) so I keep at it. If anyone wants an instructional, I have a couple good links.

Also, I'd recommend getting a weighted rope with ball bearings (Twins is the brand I use and it's bomb proof) instead of the unweighted ones and work yourself up. Also do not jump on hard ground, you'll hurt yourselves.
What you need is 4 or 6 or 9 (depending on how much space you have) rubber mats. The kind of rubber mats you put under your washing machine, those are perfect for rope jumping and cheap (buy them at your local construction market). Assemble them to form a platform and jump there. Noise will be minimal (except for the rope more or less hammering it) and your joints will thank you. One last thing, if you buy those rubber mats, do not put them inside of your appartment or house right away. Put them on your balcony and let them ventilate for a few days. They tend to stink very badly when new.
