Orks definitely wouldn't, because they wouldn't refuse a good fight. They would be charging head-first into a battle, no matter the odds.
Tau would, definitely.
Tyranids would depending on the amount of biomass available and their overall objective.

How loosely or tightly doesn't matter too much, just that it pays lip service to what each class ought to be doing with a little more slant towards combat and less towards party face skills, though those can still see use. Graft on a more sophisticated randomized map/mission system for more grinding variety than E.Y.E, a big pile of guns, a Dark Heresy style cybernetics system, and a good mission/campaign editor like the old CRPGs with a live-action DMing system, and it'd be crack for Holla Forums, /tg/, and general grind autists.

Seeing as the longevity of the game might be a bit extreme and preempt Streum from following up with a new FPSRPG, the game and therefore genre niche could still be milked relatively ethically for a long time with modestly-priced but by current standards quite content fat expansion packs developed in the postrelease by Streum team members rotated into the duty when they aren't needed on developing the new releases, meaning a cash stream for Streum and a drip feed of higher quality campaign content than the community average, in addition to new equipment to minmax around & incorporate into old or new builds in new ways that don't necessarily outshine the old ones, or else do so at an ingame price. It'd probably be sane enough financially to have the generic equipment largely available by patch without purchasing the campaign packs themselves, although the campaigns will maybe provide it more readily to players than grinding RNG missions.

But considering E.Y.E 1 floaty melee will be a little too clunky for the modern day and Deathwing melee being designed around big chunky spacemen hitting big chunky spacemonsters, nevermind that feds swinging katanas around would feel a bit weird in addition to being suicidal for non-E.Y.E tier agents and rifle butts from stealth are an effective but dull solution with not too much gap closing ability, I can see them thieving the slide & drop kicking systems and openly saying 'yeah, we took that from F.E.A.R, it was bretty gud.'

On the Dark Heresy meets E.Y.E.: that is one case where I'd prefer if it was primarily single-player with SP and MP campaign(s) added later as expansion packs. They'd have to get some other people for story, other than that I'd be all for it. But no one is so insane as to try to make a complex, huge, expensive single-player game in 2016.

Came to me when considering the relative lack of a good 40k pen & paper derived game of any kind, while also considering what Streum might do with 40k that didn't necessarily involve terminators. If I remember right, when looking at Vermintide, being something that could be considered very slightly analagous to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay at heroic power levels, I got to thinking along the lines of Fantasy Flight Games plus FPS gameplay. Combat-heavy Dark Heresy in E.Y.E's styling with a little more equipment modularity & mission variety came more or less naturally, and thinking on how to keep it well-tied to the tabletop RPG feel led me to thinking a campaign editor was in order. At the root of the matter, I just want to be the little tech-priest militant walking arsenal with a dash of hacking skill, mostly.

The fact that the game could also double as a foundation for an even more combat heavy Only War standalone or as the on ground/in ship component of a Rogue Trader campaign & sandbox game definitely helps.

Space Marine melee relies on attacks inherently lunging and on a stun-on-hit system, along with a third person twin-stick system, or at least camera angle-relative WASD with mouse camera control. Put that in first person and it'd be downright vomitous. Short-range bash attacks for stuns or knockouts from behind and slide & drop kicks if you're enough of a madman to want to close into point blank while under fire without plodding forward wearing a bomb disposal suit, that's the way to do it.

Any fiddly attempt to put in dedicated melee weapons and comboing as a regular option in a universe that doesn't have CQC in the midst of gunfire as the order of the day for most all factions, IE 40k, is doomed to either be very frustrating or immersion breakingly effective. Federal spec-ops are tough fuckers, but it's because they have shoulder mounted rocket launchers, light power armor and stupidly efficient micromunitions rifles, not because they're psionic gods of the battlefield. The power level of the player character is presumably lower than in E.Y.E.

What I'll say is I somehow forgot about SM being third-person. But either way, what I liked about melee there is the overall feel. It's so satisfying and meaty I could barely ever tire of it. And the thunder hammer+jetpack parts were the cherry on the top.

Focus Home Interactive is characteristically a hands-off publisher that lets devs handle the game they make pretty much however they want. Thus the track record of past developers working with them does not mean much as far as mods go, as it's something the developers decide for themselves, rather than a decision by the publisher in this context. It's hard to tell from the trailer snippets, but it seems like Deathwing has an equivalent feeling of impact. I imagine it can be done to have a similar feeling, but you can't flatly translate the lunges. Vermintide is a pretty good system in my experience, also. Small enemies get threshed aside by big weapons and get swung through. Big enemies stop the swing and make the weapon recoil. That system does have lunging, but on charge attacks instead of having every attack carry the player forward.

I should go back and play Dark Messiah, it's been a while. Beside kicking being the shit, I really can't remember how the melee felt in regards to flow.

upgrades as in extra health, more heavy weapons, accuracy etc? those werent in dow 2 either, not that id say thats a model anyone should follow. im also keeping in mind that this is a campaign, even the dow1 campaigns were vastly different than skirmishes where youd often bring along enough retinue units to just blaze through anything short of a stronghold mission without needing to make a base.
and that bings me to another question, are we getting back actual missions instead of a dozen skirmishes to pad out the few unique maps (that always end up playing the same anyways)?
