It's a decent game, it's pretty fun with some frustrating points.

What this game REALLY shines in is the aestetics, it's one of the best looking PSX games ever in terms of artstyle.
I love everything about how this game looks.
I would pay millions to have a team take all the assets of this game, and "rework" it, like Vanillaware did for Odin Sphere.

In fact my wishlist of "shit i want that will never happen" was something like

-Odin Sphere re-released and improved
-Muramasa re-released on all platforms and improved
-Legend of Mana re-released and improved

I used to think this was an impossible list but Odin Sphere Leifthrasir actually happened so let's hope for the best.

They have every single aspect of tempering worked out, along with recipes and such.
(You might not want to do tempering, it's incredibly game-breaking.)

It is my favorite game from my childhood, but I do have to warn you that the game obfuscates a lot of its inner workings.
I.E. how skills level up and unlock, how crafting really works, how certain quests are triggered, etc.
That being said I'd recommend going in relatively blind for NG.

Another thing I'll point out is the game has a very intricate crafting system that I think perfectly gets across the feeling of processing and refining something. Rather than just dumping everything in a pile and mashing it together you have to add a certain ingredients in exact amounts in a very specific order. The only way to know any of this is trial and error or looking up the ultra detailed crafting guides online.

Even with the old gamefaqs guides back then, the Kelson method etc, I had one perfect sword from that and another with literally broken stats via gameshark. Their performance was identical on No Future mode.

Nah, LoM sucks. If you want a good Mana game play Final Fantasy Adventure or Seiken Desentsu 3 instead.

Legend of Mana is one part SaGa and one part Mana.

And that's amazing.

Just don't expect it to be very hard, outside of multi-part bosses in no future mode.

Pokiehl is the best.

Don't expect the story to have much of a goal, you're basically just going along and talking to people about their problems.
Also getting correct ending is a pain.
The game is beautiful and so is the music.

Remember to talk to Lil' Cactus every time you finish a mission or you'll miss out on your diary entries.

Fuck yes you're going to have fun! Are you playing it on the PS1/2 and have a friend? Because this shit is multiplayer!

The lack of a proper world map sort of killed it for me.

Fair enough, but since rebuilding the world is one of the main mechanics of the game It sort of makes sense. I've had it on my vita for a while but I haven't gotten to playing it because all my stuff's locked away on a ps1 memory card.
There's also a manga adaptation as well. Full of spoilers, naturally.

Dang. I'm not sure how emulating works with multiplayer games, but let me just give you a heads up that if you have an NPC companion, you can have a player control them visiting the Inn, iirc. Either way have fun, it's a comfy fun game that got me into JRPGs as a kid.

There's also an arena to battle your friends in, I think.

This. RPG's, especially Snes and PSX ones really shined in establishing almost lifelike worlds. There were continents, cities, countries with their own goals and culture. Legend may look fantastic, but it's world feels empty.
Also it feels weird that you can't attack up or down when every other Mana game did it fine.

I'm already having fun.


I don't think you get the point of Legend. It's a series of vignettes. It's clearly not meant to be a traditional sort of game, it's almost like they took scraps of side quests from other games and stitched it all together. But there's something charming about that. And it's gorgeous and fun.

SaGa Frontier is like that too

Most areas you visit are really mazelike, but the game is gorgeous, and the music is amazing.

Combat is okay but super easy to break

It really depends on the game and/or set up if that's an issue for me. I mean, looking at a long standing series like Tales, the way the games (console ones, anyhow) have lacked in proper overworld since Vesperia have been more than a bit annoying (Xillia games handle their route system better than Graces, anyhow), though at least it's not just a "select location on map" deal (which I hear escort title Symphonia 2 did for whatever reason).

On the other hand, I really don't mind the way the Shadow Hearts series uses said "select from map" set up, because it takes place on Earth itself, and the characters occasionally bring up just how much time it takes them to get from place to place, giving a feeling to just how much distance they're having to cover as they go across Asia and Europe, or North and South America). I suppose it might help as well that, Koudelka aside (which took place in a single 1:1 sized location with no world to explore beyond it), the series has always used that set up, rather than going from having an overworld to routes/map select screen.
