My main issue with assuming the military would crush them is that military is no longer the solid institution it once was. It is now heavily niggerfied and its effectiveness in a civil war would be significantly degraded. The technological advantage only carries so far. The lack fighting men. I have seen the quality of training undertaken by regular army infantry units. It was very underwhelming to say the least. Transnational criminal organizations are businesses more than political entities, so they won't fire shots in anger on the basis of politics. But they will support those who advance their interests.

We have to keep in mind that any sort of conflict of inside the US that can be called a civil war will cause a significant diminishing of US economic power. If a government can't guarantee its stability, the value of its bonds plummet and its currency begins to fail. You can't maintain a cohesive fighting force in an environment of economic collapse. The minute welfare stops rolling is the minute you'll see some serious shit.

America has already been in a Civil War since at the very least the 60s. The problem is that this Civil War doesn't look like a physical war. Any escalation of violence that is going to happen will still never result in what looks like two armies facing off against each other.

This Civil War is very tricky and it requires fighting on political, physical, and ideological fronts, but we are at a definite disadvantage thus far. The Union blockades were effective at economically and industrially starving the Confederacy but they didn't do much to starve the population itself. The economy of the Confederacy was almost entirely based upon exporting agricultural goods (cotton, rice, indigo, tobacco, etc) to overseas nations. That economic model meant that there was little industrial capacity to speak of, which doesn't matter when your trade partners are heavily industrialized and buying as much of your goods as you can grow. It becomes a problem when you can no longer get those goods to your trade partners so you can't afford their industrial goods even if you were able to import them.

The economic situation today is very different as nearly every region of the country has enough of an industrial sector to produce the equipment needed for a sizeable military as well as the developed natural resources needed to supply their industrial base.

The navy might be able to control the major coastal cities but there is more than enough industrial, logistical, and agricultural infrastructure beyond their reach to render their efforts moot.
