Depends on the mood at the moment. But never literal retards, a.k.a. races with subhuman intelligence.

If there isn't something that isn't a standard Tolkien race and also isn't just a anthropomorphic animal then usually I'll go for that. Although, I do like a some of the "evil" standard fantasy races like goblins, gnolls, and especially kobolds depending on the design. Anything that's a construct magical, scientific, or otherwise tends to grab my attention as well.

I've played a frog person a couple of times and that is oddly satisfying. Although, I wouldn't consider that a first choice. Stuff that strikes a balance between kind of strange or goofy and unique or cool I find myself often drawn too. I tend to find races that are entirely comically or are just trying to be cool/edgy kind of tacky.

I refuse to play as humans though and other than familiarity and being unoriginal have no idea why anyone would even want to play one. Unless it's one of the very few settings that actually makes them interesting like 40k or something.
