Every female relationship in Witcher 3 felt weird as shit because they tried to jump straight from the character as established by the player in the last two games to the character as established by books the vast majority of the players haven't read. A bunch of the male relationships were similarly weird too. They tried to sort of blend from game to book characters in 2 but didn't really go beyond introducing Yen with it but by the start of 3 Geralt has full memory of even all the minor shit from the books that didn't even make it into any of the in-game material as references, like Dijkstra's broken ankle for example.

In Witcher 1 I sort of went with Triss. In 2 I went hardcore down her route. Literally all of that gets tossed out the window before 3 even starts because book characterization dictates Geralt has to drop everything he's doing to go hunt down Yen, and when you find her the first thing she does is be a total bitch to you because book characterization dictates that's how she is. I had some familiarity with her and Ciri's characters because I watched the shitty TV series but for anyone who was any less involved in the series who only played the games, the main story of 3 must fall completely flat since they have zero familiarity with most of the main characters involved, zero incentive to care about those since aside from little girl ciri they're all complete assholes to you, and the few characters who were in the last two games have had their relationships completely reset so as to make room for shit only book fans would care about.

All you have to read to appreciate the characters in TW3 is The Last Wish, the short story book. That is literally it. It's not even a task or a chore, it's actually a very entertaining book. You don't even need to read the saga after that, you can piece together the events for yourself fairly quickly. Peak laziness right here.

Not most times. Half the times. Usually they say "Forest near the village" or "West of the river from X" or something like that. Sure it's vague, but if you actually get used to no minimap and figuring out where things are you will find it. And it's an amazing feeling when you actually find shit without using the mini map. The open world aspect of the game as well as the decent graphics and presentation of it make it immersive as fuck to play like that. I'm on my first new game + with the expansions but I will play Witcher 1, 2 and then 3 with 100% no mini map and only seldom usage of the full map.

Btw the Friendly HUD mod has ability to see compass when using witcher senses as well as 3D markers if you wish. This way you can still have some guidance but without immersion breaking minimap imo. Try it out it's got its own in-game mod menu (if you set it up right) and has lots of customization options.
